Huntersville, NC o Current GroundwaterAnalyticalData: On June 19,2018, groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells MW-l through MW-5 and T-1. One or more concentrations of VOCs including benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, total xylenss, methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), naphthalene, isopropylbetuene)n-propylbenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), 1,2-dichloropropane, ethylene dibromide (EDB), diisopropyl ether (IPE),1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, and 1.3.5- trimethylbenzene were detected at concentrations above the 15,A' NC AC 2L Groundwater Standards (2L Standards) in wells including MW-l, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, and T-1. Concentrations of analytes including benzene,1,2-DCA, and EDB were detected above the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ gross contaminant levels (GCLs) in MW-2, which are the applicable standards for this site. Refer to the following Table and Appendix for current groundwater analytical data. Refer to Figures R"fe, to Table: Rqfer to Appendix. Figures 5 through 7 Table 3 Appendix B a Historical Groundwater Analytic al D ata: Total dissolved phase petroleum concentrations in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, and TW-l have decreased in comparison to the November 2017 data. Total dissolved phase petroleum concentrations in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, and MW-5 have decreased since the early stages of the project. The plume may be attenuating east toward downgradient MW-4 and vertically toward T-1. No dissolved phase petroleum concentrations have been detected at or above the laboratory detection limits in monitoring well MW-5 since the March 2009 sampling event. Refer to the following table(s) for historical groundwater analylical daIa. R"f", to Table(s)Table 4 a Dissolved Phase Plume Size and Location The on-site dissolved phase plume is oval shaped and has an approximate length of 94 feet and width of 41 feet based on the benzene concentrations above 2L Standards. The dissolvedphase plume that is above the NCDEQ GCLs, the applicable standards forthis site, is approximately 12 feet in length by 7 feet in width (Figure 5). The plume maps for constituents that are above the GCLs are shown on the following figures. The closest drinking water supplywell (WSW-1) is located approximately 450 feet south (hydraulically upgradient) of the site. No surface water bodies were observed in the field or on the topographic map within 500-feet of the source area. Texaco Food Mart #2 Lexington Davidson County, North Carolina lncident#:22332 Monitoring Reporl August 13,2018 Page 5 2.0 CONCLUSIONS o Free product was not detected in site wells during this reporting period. o Dissolved phase petroleum constitusnt compounds were detected in concentrations above 2L Standards in monitoring wells MW-1 through MW-4 and T-1.o Dissolved phase concentrations of benzene, 1,2-DCA, and EDB were above the NCDEQ GCLs in MW-2. r Total dissolved phase petroleum constituent compound concentrations decreased in monitoring wells MW-l, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, and TW-l since November 2011. o Total dissolved phase petroleum concentrations in monitoring wells MW-l, MW-2, MW-3 and MW-5 have decreased since the early stages of the project. o The plume may be attenuating east toward downgradient MW-4 & vertically toward T- 1 . o MW-5 continues to show non-detect levels of contamination. . After the sampling event, an MMPE event was conducted recovering a total of 1,588 gallons of dissolved phase impacted groundwater and2.38 gallons of gasoline as vapor. . In 200I, three (3) privately owned drinking water supply wells were identified within a 1,000-foot radius of the source area with the nearest confirmed drinking water supply well approximately 450 feet hydraulically upgradient from the source area. o Based on a conversation with the former incident manager, Michael Rogers of the NCDEQ on November 16,2010, since WSW-1 is approximately 450 feet upgradient of the site and the property owner would not allow Shield or NCDEQ to sample their supply well, the Texaco Food Mart #2 site would likelybe reduced to low risk if soil excavation was completed to remove as much soil as feasibly possible in the area of SB-8 and if MW-2 groundwater concentrations were below GCLs. . Soil excavation around boring SB-8 was conducted on February 28, 2012 via over drilling with i4-inch outside diameter hollow stem augers around the SB-8 boring. Details of the excavation were previously submitted to the NCDEQ in the Monitoring Report dated October 23,2012.o The contaminant plume above the applicable GCLs remains only approximately 12 feet in diameter and located near the western gasoline dispensers.. Overall, the contamination at the site has graduallybeen cleaning up by soil removal, air sparging, MMPE events, and attenuation processes. Texaco Food Mart #2 Lexington Davidson County, North Carolina lncident#:22332 Monitoring Report August 13,2018 Page 6 a o a o 3.0 RECOMMENDATIONS It has been recommended by Shield that bi-weekly air sparging be conducted to reduce the groundwater concentrations to below GCLs, with NCDEQ agreement. This activity has not been agreed upon recently with the NCDEQ. Since the plume above the GCLs is only approximately 12 feet in diameter, Shield recommends continuing semi-annual Mobile Multi-Phase Extraction (MMPE) events at the site in order to expedite cleanup to below the GCLs. Shieldrecommends conducting a sampling event following an MMPE event in January 2019. Once MW-2 is below the GCLs, a "no further action" determination should be requested from the NCDEQ. The MMPE system was active for 96.0 hours. During the event vacuum at the recovery pump ranged frorn 14.0 to 18.0 inches of mercury (hg) and stabilized at approximately 16.0 inches of mercury. Airflow rates ranged from 3,100 to 3,600 feet per minute and stabilized at 3,500 feet per minute. System temperature ranged from 98 - 132 degrees (F) and humidity maintained 99 percent. Field gauged volatile organic compounds (VOC's) decreased from 1,200 parts per-million (PPM) to 900 (PPM) throughout the event. Groundwater / Product Mix Recovered: During the event, a total of 1,588 gallons of product/water mix were l'emoved from the site and properly disposed at a certified North Carolina disposal facility. No free product was recovered as liquid. Total fluids recovered, was measured based on stick readings conducted during and followingthe event. Based on 96.0 hours of operation and atotal of 1,588 gallons recovered, the average groundwater recovery rate was calculated to be approximately 16.54 gallons per hour. Events Results: Based on mass-removal calculations 14.67 pounds or 2.38 gallons of VOC's were removed as vapor. Using Dwyer Magnehelic gauges, vacuum influence (inches of water) was rneasured at monitoring points MW-1 and MW-3. Vacuum influence was observed at monitoring point MW-l up to 0.10 inches of water. Draw-down was observed in MW-l and MW-3 at 0.35 and 0.38 feet respectively. Following the event, no free product was identified in any well.
