Huntersville, NC • Current Groundwater Analytical Data: Shield conducted bi-weekly air-sparging events using a portable air-sparging unit to facilitate reduction of dissolved phase concentrations in MW02. Air sparging was conducted for approximately 7 hours overnight on February 28, 2012 in air sparge well AS-I and monitoring well MW-2. Air spatging was also conducted on AS-I for approximately 6 hours a day on March 14, March 28, April 11, and April 25, 2012. Air sparging could not safely be conducted in MW-2 during the March and April visits be.cause those events were conducted during business hours and MW-2 is in a high traffic area near the dispenser island. Oh June 28, 2012 groundwater samples were collected from monitoring well MW-2. One or more concentrations of benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, total xylenes, MTBE, naphthalene, 1, 2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), and ethylene dibromide (EDB) were detected at concentrations above the 15A NCAC 2L Groundwater Standards (2L Standards) in MW-2. Concentrations of benzene, 1,2-DCA, and EDB were detected at concentrations above the gross contaminant levels (GCLs) in MW-2. Refer to the following Table and Appendix for current groundwater analytical data. Texaco Food Ma11 #2 Lexington, Davidson County, North Carolina Incident#: 22332 Refer to Table: Refer to Appendix: Table 3 Appendix A • Historical Groundwater Analytical Data: Monitoring Report October 23, 2012 Page 3 Total dissolved phase petroleum constituent compounds concentrations in monitoring well MW-2 have generally decreased in comparison to March 2009 data although some constituents have increased. Refer to the following table(s) for historical groundwater analytical data. Refer to Table(s): Table 3 • Dissolved Phase Plume Size and Location: Dissolved phase plume figures could not be completed due to only one monitoring well (MW-2) being sampled during this sampling event. Previously MW-2 was the only well with concentrations exceeding the GCLs. See Figure 4 for the recent grnundwater constituent of concern map. • Proximity of Plume to Nearest Receptor(s): Based on the last receptor survey conducted in 2001, as well as an update conducted after 2003, there are three (3) confirmed drinking water supply wells and five (5) inactive supply wells located within 1,000 feet of the source area. The closest drinking water supply well (WSW-!) is located approximately 450 feet south ofthe site. No surface water bodies were observed in the field or onthe topographic map within 500-feet of the source area. Refer to Figure: Refer to Table: Figure 3 Table 1 • Predictive Rate of Contaminant Transport: The contaminant plume has been fairly immobile over the past several years. Contaminant transport is typically in the same direction as groundwater flow, but with a slower velocity. Refer to the following Table(s): Refer to Table(s): Tables 2 and 3 1.2,6 Soil Excavation • In the Acknowledgement of CSA Addendum letter dated December 17, 2010, the NCDENR requested that the soil around CSA Addendum borings SB-4, SB-8, and SB-14 Texaco Food Mart #2 Lexington, Davidson County, North Carolina Incident#: 22332 Monitoring Report October 23, 2012 Page4 be excavated. After the evaluation of one of Shield's engineers, it was determined that shoring would be required along Cotton Grove Road and next to the building. Shield and NCDENR personnel discussed other options for removing as much of the contaminated soil as possible. Due to traditional excavation not being feasible at the site due to underground utilities, canopies, and shoring that would be required along Cotton Grove Road and next to the building, soil excavation via over drilling around the three soil samples (SB-4, SB-8, and SB-14) collected during the CSA Addendum that had constituents above the residential Maximum Soil Contaminant Concentrations (MSCCs) was recommended by Shield. The NCDENR was agreeable to this approach. • After Shield's exhaustive search to get quotes from drillers with the ability to drill large diameter soil borings in tight spaces and with NCDENR concurrence, excavation of the boring SB-4, SB-8, and SB-14 were planned via over drilling with 14-inch outside diameter hollow stem augers around the borings. However, on Febrnary28, 2012 when Shield personnel, drilling personnel from Geologic Exploration, and utility clearance personnel from Taylor Wiseman and Taylor observed the location of underground utility lines, product lines, etc., a decis.ion was made that over drilling to remove soil could not be safely conducted in the locations of SB-4 and. SB-14. Therefore, over drilling Was only performed around SB-8. Four borings were advanced around SB08 to a depth ofl5 feet below ground surface (bgs). One sample was collected from each boring (SB-SA, B, C, and D) at a depth of approximately 8 to 10 feet bgs. The depth of sample collected was based on highest concentrations detected during the CSA Addendum. Only one constituent (Aromatic C9-C 10) in sample SB-SC was detected above the residential MSCCs. All other constituents in the samples collected from the four borings were below residential MSCCs. • Eleven 55-gallon drums of soil were removed from the SB-8 area and disposed of by EVO Environmental and Industrial Resources. The certificate of disposal is included in Appendix B. · · Refer to the following Table, Figure, and Appendix: Refer to Table: Refer to Figure: Refer to Appendix: 1.2.7 Other Field Data Collected: Table 4 Figure 5 Appendix B • No additional field data was collected. Texaco Food Mart #2 Lexington Davidson County, North Carolina Incident#: 22332 2.0 CONCLUSIONS • Free product was not detected in site wells during this reporting period. Monitoring Report October 23, 2012 Page 5 • Dissolved phase petroleum constituent compounds were detected in concentrations above 2L Standards in monitoring well MW-2. • Dissolved phase concentrations of benzene, 1,2-DCA, and EDB in MW-2 were above the NCDENR Gross Contaminant Levels (GCLs). • Dissolved phase petroleum constituent compound concentrations generally decreased in monitoring well MW-2 since March 2009, likely due to the bi-weekly air sparging conducted. • Contaminated soil was removed around SB-8 via four soil borings utilizing a 14-inch outside diameter hollow stem auger. Only one constituent (Aromatic C9°Cl 0) in sample SB-8C was detected above the residential MSCCs. All other constituents in the samples collected from the four borings were below residential MSCCs. Due to the location of the dispenser island and canopy, additional soil excavation'in the area of SB-8C is not feasible. • Three (3) privately owned drinking water supply wells were identified within a 1,000- foot radius of the source area with one confirmed drinking water supply well within 450 feet of the source area. Based on a conversation with Michael Rogers of the NCDENR on November 16, 2010, since WSW-! is approximately450 feetupdradient of the site , and the property owner would not allow Shield or NCDENR to sample their supply well, . I the site would likely be reduced to low risk if soil excavation was completed to.remove as much soil as feasibly possible and ifMW-2 groundwater concentrations were below GCLs. 3.0 RECOMMENDATIONS • It is recommended that bi-weekly air sparging be conducted to reduce the groundwater concentrations to below GCLs, with NCDENR and Trust Fund approval. • Once MW-2 is below the GCLs we will request a "no further action" determination from theNCDENR.
