Huntersville, NC • Current Groundwater Analytical Data: A month long Mobile Multi Phase Extraction (MMPE) event was performed on monitoring wells MW-2, MW-3 and T-1 from January 5 through 30, 2009. A total of 8,695 gallons of petroleum-impacted groundwater were recovered from the wells. Based on mass removal calculations 32.48 gallons of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) (as gasoline) were removed as vapor. The MMPE report is included as Appendix A. On March 3, 2009 groundwater samples were collected from the six monitoring wells. One or more concentrations of benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, total xylenes, MTBE, naphthalene, 1, 2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), aromatics and aliphatics below the Cl9 to C36 range were detected at concentrations above the !SA NCAC 21 Groundwater Standards (21 Standards) in four site monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2, MW-3 and T-1 ). Refer to the following Table(s) and Appendix for current groundwater analytical data. Refer to Table(s): Tables 3 and 4 Refer to Appendix: Appendix B and Appendix C Texaco Food Mart #2 Lexington, Davidson County, North Carolina Incident#: 22332 • Historical Groundwater Analytical Data: Monitoring Report April 14, 2009 Page3 Total dissolved phase petroleum constituent compounds concentrations in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3 and T-1 have generally decreased in comparison to November 2007 data although some constituents have increased. Refer to the following table(s) for historical groundwater analytical data. Refer to Table(s): Table 4 • Dissolved Phase Plume Size and Location: The dissolved phase naphthalene plume is the largest contaminant plume greater than the 15A NCAC 21 Groundwater Standards (21 Standards). It is elliptical in size and has an approximate length of 120 feet and width of 70 feet. The isoconcentration maps can be seen in the following Figures. Refer to Figure(s): Figures 5 through 11 • Proximity of Plume to Nearest Receptor(s): Based on the last receptor survey conducted in 2001, as well as an update conducted after 2003, there are three (3) confirmed drinking water supply wells and five (5) inactive supply wells located within 1,000 feet of the source area. The closest drinking water supply well (WSW-!) is located approximately 450 feet south of the site. No surface water bodies were observed in the field or on the topographic map within 500-feet of the source area. Refer to Table: Table 1 • Predictive Rate of Contaminant Transport: The contaminant plume has been fairly immobile over the past several years. Contaminant transport is typically in the same direction as groundwater flow, but with a slower velocity. Refer to the following Table(s) and Figure(s): Refer to Table(s): Refer to Figure(s): 1.2.6 Other Field Data Collected: Tables 2, 3 & 4 Figures 4 through 11 • Field measurement log is included in Appendix B. Texaco Food Mart #2 Lexington Davidson County, North Carolina Incident#: 22332 2.0 CONCLUSIONS Monitoring Report April 14, 2009 Page4 • Free product was not detected in site wells during this reporting period. The water table depth has risen by as much as nearly 5 feet. • A month long MMPE event was conducted on monitoring wells including MW-2, MW-3 and T-1 prior to the sampling event. A total of 8,695 gallons of petroleum impacted groundwater and 32.48 gallons of VOCs as gasoline were extracted and removed/disposed. • Dissolved phase petroleum constituent compounds were detected in concentrations above 21 Standards in monitoring wells including MW-I, MW-2, MW-3 and T-1 during this period. Extractable and volatile petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in concentrations above the 21 Standards in monitoring well MW-I, MW-2, MW-3 and MW-5. • Dissolved phase concentration of benzene in MW-2 was above the NCDENR Gross Contaminant Levels (GCLs). • Dissolved phase petroleum constituent compound concentrations generally decreased in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3 and T-1 after the MMPE event in January 2009, but not significantly enough to remediate the site below the 21 Standards or the GCLs. • Three (3) privately owned drinking water supply wells were identified within a 1,000- foot radius of the source area with one confirmed drinking water supply well within 450 feet of the source area. When last contacted, two of these drinking water supply well owners were not interested in connecting to the municipal water supply. 3.0 RECOMMENDATIONS • It is recommended that the Corrective Action Plan including the air sparing/soil vapor extraction remediation system be implemented at the site to clean up soil and groundwater contamination, with NCDENR and Trust Fund approval. • A Jot of the subsurface portion of the remediation system has already been installed. It is requested by Techno, LLC for Holding Brothers, Inc. to move an air sparging/soil vapor extraction system from their recently cleaned up Crossroads Grocery site to this site, with NCDENR and Trust Fund approval. The MMPE system was active for 384.0 hours. During the event monitoring well MW-2 was online for a period of 383 hours, MW-3 was online intermittently for 20 hours and T-1 was online for a period of 5 hours. Vacuum at the recovery pump ranged from 19.0 to 22.0 inches of mercury (hg). While connected to MW-2 vacuum stabilized at approximately 20.0 inches of mercury. Airflow rates ranged from 1,300 to 1,800 feet per minute. While connected to MW-2 running at 100% flow, airflow rates stabilized at approximately 1,600 feet per minute. System temperature ranged from 65.0 -138.0 degrees F and humidity maintained 99 percent. Field gauged volatile organic compound (VOC's) emissions decreased from 18,000 to 7,500 parts per-million (PPM) throughout the event. Groundwater / Product Mix Recovered: During the event a total of 8,695 gallons of product/water mix were removed from the site in two loads and properly disposed at a certified North Carolina disposal facility. No free product was identified in the recovered fluids. Total fluids recovered, was measured based on stick readings conducted during and following the event Based on 384 hours of operation and a total of 8,695 gallons recovered, the average groundwater recovery rate was calculated to be approximately 22.65 gallons per hour. Events Results: Based on mass-removal calculations 203.01 pounds or 32.48 gallons of VOC's (as gasoline) were removed as vapor. Using Dwyer magnehelic gauges, vacuum influence (inches of water) was measured at monitoring points MW-1, MW-3 and MW-4. No measurable vacuum influence was obsen-ed at any monitoring point. Maximum draw-down was identified in MW-1, MW-3 and MW-4 at 0.48, 0.09 and 0.09 feet respectively. Following the event, no free product was identified in any well.
