Research at PCB Landfill
Warren County
Dear Bill,
I have mapped out the next couple of steps for my work at the PCB landfill.
These steps include modeling of the landfill, a field trip, and some field surveys.
First, we will model the landfill itself. Dave Evans and I are currently working to find a
good way to numerically represent the system. As you may know from Ed Mussier' s
work, with few exceptions leachate level within the landfill is directly proportional to
barometric pressure. The model should provide answers to the anomalous readings and
offer explanations ( other than leakage) for the water level fluctuations. When completed,
the model will provide our most thorough understanding of the landfill to date.
I am leading a field trip to the site on Friday, February 13, 1997. The trip will
consist of a short presentation and site walk over for my advisor and some other students.
The purpose of the visit is to familiarize Dr. Evans with the site and to select wells to be
included in several aquifer pumping tests. In addition, we will measure the magnetic
field at several locations. If there is sufficient variability in the magnetic field at the site,
I will complete a formal magnetometer survey in the future.
I will update you again toward the end of February. If you have any questions
before then, please don't hesitate to ask.
Matt
