Box 2091 Raleigh, North Carolina Attention: Mr. Jerry Perkins March 15, 1979 i Subject: Volume Calculations-Clay Liner Soil Proposed PCB Disposal Site -··, ~'.; i Warren County, North Carolina S&ME Job No. RG-730 Gentlemen: As requested, Soil & Material Engineers, Inc. has further evaluated the volume of soil available on-site, suitable for use as clay liner material. The suitability of the on-site soils were investigated by our company and discussed in our report dated March 5, 1979. At this time, the dimensions of the disposal pit are uncertain. Therefore, the quantity of clay liner soil is also unknown. However, based upon a preliminary estimate of a 4 acre disposal pit, a 5 foot thick compacted clay liner and a 2 1/2 foot thick compacted clay blanket, the estimated volume of compacted clay needed for construction of the disposal pit would be about 48,400 cubic yards. We have estimated that about 53,600 cubic yards (bank volume) of suitable clay exists within the area en- compassed by our borings. In a compacted state, this bank volume would represent about 45,600 cubic yards (assuming 15% shrinkage). Although the estimated compacted volume of suitable soil existing within the area investiaged is slightly less than estimated volume needed for a 4 acre disposal pit; we feel that a sufficient quantity of additional suitable soil is available in other adjacent areas. Department of Human Resources P roposed PCB Disposal Site March 15, 1979 l>age 2 It is our opinion, based upon observations at the site, soil borings, and laboratory tests, that a much larger volume of suitable soils are available in the prev- iously cleared areas, immediately adjacent to the area investigated. We suggest that -after the final dimensions of the site have been determined, the limits of the clay liner borrow area can also be established. Then, if the final design is significantly different from our preliminary assumptions, we can test soils within the expanded borrow area, to verify the suitability of .this material.
