A topographic map of the Site is included as Figure 1. This letter report describes the sampling methods and results for the gauging/sampling events and summarizes operational data associated with the onsite groundwater recovery and treatment system. In general, groundwater analytical results for 2012 were consistent with historic trends. April and October 2012 Groundwater Gauging Events Water levels were measured in Site monitoring wells under static (non-pumping) conditions on April 23, 2012, prior to restarting the system for the year. The water level in each monitoring well was measured using an oil/water interface probe. Any indications of the presence of light, non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) were confirmed with a bailer. Monitoring well locations are shown on Figure 2. Well depths and screen intervals for all monitoring and pumping wells are provided in Table 1. Depth-to-water measurements and groundwater elevations during non- pumping conditions are presented in Table 2a and on Figure 3, respectively. LNAPL was measured in 4 monitoring wells: 2W20 (0.52 feet), 4W5 (0.15 feet), 4W7 (0.75 feet) and 4W20 (2.30 feet). The groundwater remediation system was down during the August 2012 sampling event; therefore, groundwater levels were collected during pumping conditions on October 12, 2012. Depth-to-groundwater and water level elevations are included in Table 2b. A groundwater contour map under pumping (dynamic) conditions was generated and is included as Figure 4. Each groundwater recovery well produces a cone of depression that has a localized effect on the water table and provides containment. LNAPL was only measured in 2W20 (0.02 feet) during the October 2012 gauging event. Mr. Gene Mao Guilford County Department of Public Health February 15, 2013 Page 2 P:\Common_Projects\PlantationPipeline\Guilford Greene\Reports\2012 O&M Report\Final Report\02_15_2013_OMRPT_GuilGreene_FINAL.doc August 2012 Groundwater Sampling Event Twenty-six monitoring wells and two former air-sparging wells were sampled on August 14 through 15, 2012. Specifically, groundwater samples were collected from the following wells: 2W1, 2W2, 2W3, 2W4, 2W7, 2W8, 2W9, 2W10, 2W12, 2W13, 2W15, 2W16, 2W17, 2W18, 2W19, 2W21, 2W22, 2W23, 4W1, 4W2, 4W3, 4W8, 4W12, 4W13, 4W18, 4W19, AS1 and AS2. Prior to sampling, the water level in each monitoring well was measured using an oil/water interface probe, as discussed earlier. After gauging, the wells were then purged using disposable bailers. Field measurements including temperature, pH, and specific conductance are summarized in Table 3. Purging continued until a minimum of three well volumes were extracted, or until the well was purged dry. Each of the monitoring wells was then sampled immediately following well purging using a disposable bailer. Groundwater samples were shipped via overnight delivery to Accutest Laboratories in Scott, Louisiana, for analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes (BTEX), and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) by USEPA Method 8260B. August 2012 analytical results are summarized in Table 4. Groundwater analytical results and exceedances of 15A NCAC 2L .0200 (NCAC 2L) standards are shown on Figure 5 through Figure 9 for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes, and MTBE, respectively. A copy of the laboratory analytical report is included as Appendix A. Historical groundwater analytical data is included in Table 5. Dissolved concentrations of at least one of the analytes exceeded the NCAC 2L groundwater quality standards in monitoring wells 2W-18, 4W1, 4W2, 4W3, 4W8, 4W12, 4W13, 4W18, and AS1. These wells are generally located in the area of the Site where groundwater recovery is taking place. The 2012 groundwater analytical results generally indicate that the extent of groundwater impact is contained due to groundwater extraction system operation at the site. 2012 SYSTEM DATA System Operations From 2011 until early 2012, URS completed the installation of a new building over the existing remediation system components. Repairs and renovations were also completed including electrical and plumbing upgrades to remediation system components, manifolds, and control panels. These upgrades also included installation of new influent and effluent transfer pumps, replacement of the effluent flow meter and the removal and re-bedding of granular activated carbon in the liquid phase carbon vessels. The groundwater recovery and treatment system was restarted on April 23, 2012 and operated throughout 2012. Groundwater recovery was conducted in 12 recovery wells: 2W20, 4W2, 4W3, 4W5, 4W7, 4W8, 4W13, 4W15, 4W20, 4W21, 4W22, and 4W23. The recovered Mr. Gene Mao Guilford County Department of Public Health February 15, 2013 Page 3 P:\Common_Projects\PlantationPipeline\Guilford Greene\Reports\2012 O&M Report\Final Report\02_15_2013_OMRPT_GuilGreene_FINAL.doc groundwater is routed to a holding tank where any recovered LNAPL is separated, and then removed. Water from the holding tank is transferred to a low-profile, tray-style air stripper for primary treatment. After being processed through the air stripper, the water is pumped from the stripper sump, through two 750-pound, liquid-phase carbon vessels (in series) and then discharged to the City of Greensboro Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW). During this operating period, approximately 432,500 gallons of water were recovered, treated, and discharged to the POTW. For the operating period, the average groundwater recovery flow rate was approximately 1,716 gallons per day. URS completed LNAPL gauging, bailing, and passive removal using absorbent socks throughout the year (during both pumping and non-pumping conditions). A summary of LNAPL removal activities is included in Table 6. A total of approximately 2 gallons of LNAPL were removed using absorbent socks during 2012. In addition, approximately 14 gallons of LNAPL were removed by hand bailing in the first quarter of 2012, prior to system startup. System Maintenance System maintenance performed during 2012 included: • The routine maintenance of groundwater recovery pumps, backwash of the carbon vessels, cleaning of the air stripper, and testing the treatment system components. • Routine maintenance to the air compressor. • Replaced the holding tank float trees. • Installation of new influent and effluent transfer pumps. • Welding repairs conducted on the tray air stripper sump. • Replaced exhaust fan for compressor room ventilation. • Servicing of pumps that were showing low flow rates. • Replaced the regenerative blower for the tray air stripper. • Absorbent socks were placed in 2W14, 4W1, 4W7 and 4W21 (a non-pumping well) and were replaced during O&M visits throughout the year, and • Routine site maintenance including fencing and gate upkeep and tree removal around the system compound. PLAN FOR 2013 For 2013, the following activities are planned for the Guilford Greene Site: • Annual groundwater level measurements (August); • Annual groundwater sampling event (August); • Bi-Weekly operation and maintenance on the groundwater recovery and treatment system; Mr. Gene Mao Guilford County Department of Public Health February 15, 2013 Page 4 P:\Common_Projects\PlantationPipeline\Guilford Greene\Reports\2012 O&M Report\Final Report\02_15_2013_OMRPT_GuilGreene_FINAL.doc • Monthly monitoring of treatment system effluent (and associated Discharge Monitoring Report (DMR) preparation); • Address LNAPL levels throughout the year (during pumping conditions) by bailing and absorbent socks. The MS and MSD will provide site specific matrix data for those samples spiked by the laboratory and may be applicable to other samples of similar matrix from the site. Since the MS and MSD are chosen at random from an analytical batch, the sample chosen for spike purposes may or may not have been a sample submitted in this sample delivery group. The validity of the analytical procedures for which data is reported in this analytical report is determined by the Laboratory Control Sample (LCS) and the Method Blank (MB). The Laboratory Control Sample (LCS) and the Method Blank (MB) are processed with the samples and the MS/MSD to ensure method criteria are achieved throughout the entire analytical process. If insufficient sample is supplied for MS/MSD, a Laboratory Control Sample (LCS) and a Laboratory Control Sample Duplicate (LCSD) are reported with the analytical batch and serve as the batch quality control (QC). Any other exceptions associated with this report will be footnoted in the analytical result page(s) or the quality control summary page(s). Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or comments pertaining to this data report. Please reference the above Certificate of Analysis Number. This report shall not be reproduced except in full, without the written approval of the laboratory. The reported results are only representative of the samples submitted for testing.
