C SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION
Progress Environmental, Inc. (Progress) was contracted by Quality Oil Company, LLC to conduct
groundwater monitoring activities at the Hollar’s Grocery located at 3709 Courtney-Huntsville
Road in Yadkinville, Yadkinville County, North Carolina. The site consists of an active
convenience store which stores petroleum products in underground storage tanks (USTs) and an
aboveground storage tank (AST) for retail sale. The site is located in a residential and agricultural
area of Yadkinville. A release at the site was identified in July 1990 (approximate). The site
remains a High Risk due to the presence of active water-supply wells in the vicinity.
Information regarding the former on-site USTs is presented below:

D FIELD ACTIVITIES
Progress collected groundwater samples from the monitoring and recovery wells MWA, MWB,
MWN, MWQ, MWT, VERW1, VWERW2/RW3, and RW7 and water-supply well WSN on
November 28, 2016. Prior to sampling the monitoring wells, the depth-to-groundwater from the top
of each well casing was measured in the monitoring wells using an electric water level and oil/water
interface indicator. The meter was decontaminated between uses according to the following
procedure:
• washed with potable water and phosphate-free detergent solution;
• rinsed with potable water; and
• rinsed with distilled water.

The monitoring wells were purged by bailing an equivalent of three volumes of water from the
wells using a one-liter capacity disposable polypropylene bailer. The monitoring wells were then
sampled using a dedicated, disposable bailer for each well. The groundwater samples were
decanted into laboratory-prepared containers. The sample containers were labeled with identifying
numbers and information, preserved on ice, and delivered under chain-of-custody to R&A in
Kernersville, North Carolina for analysis.
Laboratory Analytical Results
R&A analyzed the groundwater samples for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by Standard
Method 6200B including ethanol, MTBE, and IPE. A summary of the groundwater analytical
results is presented in Table B-4 and on Figure 4.
Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring and recovery wells
MWA and MWQ detected several petroleum-related compounds at concentrations below their
respective NC2LGWQS.
Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MWB detected
benzene (1.32 µg/L), IPE (356 µg/L), and MTBE (22.7 µg/L) at concentrations that exceed their
respective NC2LGWQS.
Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MWN detected
benzene (35.3 µg/L), 1,2-dichloroethane (32.6 µg/L), IPE (1,320 µg/L), and MTBE (380 µg/L) at
concentrations that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS.
Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MWT detected 1,2-
dichloroethane (1.69 µg/L) at a concentration that exceeds its NC2LGWQS.
Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well VERW1 detected
benzene (366 µg/L), IPE (4,050 µg/L), MTBE (2,110 µg/L), and naphthalene (65.3 µg/L)
concentrations that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS.
Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well VERW2/RW3
detected 1,2-dichloroethane (0.60 µg/L) at a concentration that exceeds its NC2LGWQS.
Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from recovery well RW7 detected
benzene (192 µg/L), IPE (297 µg/L), and naphthalene (108 µg/L) concentrations that exceed their
respective NC2LGWQS.
Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from water-supply well WSN did not
detect targeted compounds above the laboratory detection limit.
E CONCLUSIONS
Based on the results of the groundwater sampling event, Progress makes the following
conclusions:

• Progress collected and analyzed groundwater samples from MWA, MWB, MWN, MWQ,
MWT, VERW1, VWERW2/RW3, and RW7 and water-supply well WSN for VOCs using
standard Method 6200B.
• Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring and recovery
wells MWA and MWQ detected several petroleum-related compounds at concentrations
below their respective NC2LGWQS.
• Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring and recovery
wells MWB, MWN, MW-T, VERW1, VERW2/RW3, and RW7 detected targeted
petroleum compounds at concentrations that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS.
Based on the results of the groundwater sampling event, Progress makes the following
recommendations:
• Based on review of the analytical results, it appears that the detected concentrations in the
groundwater samples collected from on-site monitoring wells have generally decreased at
the site and targeted compounds have not been detected in the groundwater samples
collected from the active, on-site water-supply well. Therefore, Progress recommends
continued natural attenuation monitoring, with the utilization of remedial additives for
further degradation of dissolved-phase petroleum contamination.
