These activities were conducted pursuant to a request from the NCDEQ to assess groundwater quality in the area of the spill bucket replaced at this facility. The faulty spill bucket has been replaced by D&S Equipment Service. Figure 1 illustrates the location of the project site on a USGS topographic map, and Figure 2 illustrates the approximate locations of the USTs, dispensers and temporary monitoring well recently installed at this facility. On March 7, 2023, Henry Nemargut Engineering Services mobilized personnel and drilling equipment to the site to install a monitoring well in close proximity to the spill bucket soil sample collected at this site on 12/23/2022. On this date, a temporary monitoring well was installed to a total depth of 16’ below ground surface based on the observed water table. The 2” PVC well was constructed with a 10’ screened interval and a 6’ PVC casing. TW-1 was placed in close proximity to abandoned monitoring well MW-2 which was installed in conjunction with assessment activities for previous GW Incident #6823. On March 8, 2023, HN Engineering returned to the site to collect water samples for analyses via Method 6200B + Oxygenates and MADEP VPH. Prior to sampling, the well was developed by removal of 3 well volumes via hand baler. The depth to water was measured at approximately 9.6’ below ground surface prior to development and sampling. Following development, samples were obtained from the disposable baler. The water samples were obtained as specified in the collection, preservation, and handling section of the specific method. Each container was labeled with sample location, analyses to be performed, time, date, and the sampler's name. They were then placed in a cooler and chilled with ice to approximately 4oC in preparation for transportation to the analytical laboratory utilizing EPA approved chain of custody procedures. Laboratory analytical results indicated the presence of (3) 6200B compounds exceeding 2L Standards, with no compounds exceeding 10x 15 NCAC 2B surface water standards. MADEP VPH C9-C22 aromatics compounds also exceeded 15 NCAC 2L Standards. Benzene was noted at a concentration of 10.7 ug/l (<10X 2B – 510 ug/l). No GCL violations were noted and no floating free product was measured. Table 1 contains current groundwater analytical results for the water sample obtained from this release site. Attachment A contains a copy of the laboratory analytical report for the groundwater samples collected on March 8, 2023. Historically, monitoring well MW-2 installed in the area of TW-1 was documented to contain Benzene at a concentration of 750 ug/l on January 26, 1993. Results from TW-1 indicate a significantly reduced contaminant concentration for benzene compared to historical groundwater data, suggesting that any new release from the spill bucket replaced at this facility on 12/23/2022 has not resulted in significant groundwater impact. Based on the results from the groundwater analyses, Henry Nemargut Engineering Services recommends that the NCDEQ determine any further action in response to the site check conducted at the regular spill bucket at this site since the 2 previous releases reported at this facility have been closed out by the NCDEQ. A copy of this report has been forwarded to: Mike Haseltine NCDEQ – WIRO - UST Section 127 Cardinal Drive Extension Wilmington, NC 28403 Mr. Stanley, please contact me at (336) 316-0452 if you have questions regarding this report. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as "Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited.
