Yes either would work for us. I thought maybe you would have a generator that could be hooked up to the irrigation
well for sampling, I know you had said there was not power on the property at this time.

Thanks Liz,
Can we do either the shallow aquifer monitoring well or the existing well sampling? Drillers will have to
extract the water from the existing well. Drillers are not cheap and their schedules aren’t reliable. It may be
easier and cheaper to do the shallow monitoring well because I can do that in-house.
Thanks.

Hi Kirk,
After looking over your question, as there is no GW data at this high‐risk noncom/nonregulated site, I would suggest
that they can sample the existing WSW (in leu of installing shallow temporary MW) and if clean, can back up and install
new well, and then sample new well.
NRP restriction would still be on the site and NRP would need modification due to a new WSW location. NRP not
removed from site b/c do not know what is in source are or in shallow GW.
Some type of data is needed for us to move forward and I believe this to be the most cost effective way to allow us to
get GW data and for the property owner to be able to install an additional MW.
Thank you.

I’m OK with that approach and the outcome might be the same ‐ we’re after GW data. If either WSW is impacted above
2L then the owner has a problem.

Hey Liz,
I just wanted to make sure of something on this one.
The existing well is 150 feet deep. The owner said he was considering a deeper one to get better water
quality. Given the depth of the new well built to standards, do you really want to check the top on the surficial
water table at halfway the distance from the former tank location?
The existing well is approximately 75 feet from the former tank location. The new well will likely be further
away than 75 feet but not more than 150 feet.
Please confirm that the surficial aquifer well and sample are necessary. Thank you.

Hi Kirk,
Talked this one over with Mike today and we came up with the following requirements to install an additional well on
site:
Per 15A NCAC 2C standards, the new irrigation well needs to be, at a minimum, 50 feet from potential sources of
GW contamination.
A temporary MW should be installed half way between former tank pit and proposed new WSW location, and
the MW sampled per risk‐based analysis.
o If the MW is clean, the proposed location for the new WSW will stand and the county can issue the
permit with DWM input.
6
o If the MW shows contamination, we would request that the proposed location be backed up and an
additional MW installed halfway between the last temp MW and the newly proposed WSW
If the new WSW can be installed outside of a 150 radius, no additional GW sampling would be required from the
UST Section as this would put the incident risk to low.
Once new well installed, an addendum to NRP may be required depending on location of new WSW
The current WSW should be abandoned, and a copy of abandonment records submitted to the UST Section.
Please let me know if additional clarification is needed.
Thank you.

Hey Liz,
Sorry. I’ve got another question for you.
We removed an oil tank from this property several months ago. It leaked and you processed a NRP for it. In
June you sent a letter saying the site is a High Risk and that additional work should be done regarding the onsite
well.
So the property owner does not think that the existing well is sufficiently deep for future use. He would like to
abandon this well and install a new deeper well. What do we need to do to have you approve this course of
action? And do we need to sample the new well?
Let me know and call me if you want to discuss it in more detail. Thanks.
