As discussed in the April 27, 2023, path to closure conference call with Georgia Pacific, CATLIN, and yourself, groundwater contamination at this site is currently being monitored as part of the Former FHR North Terminal Loading Rack Area (NCDEQ Incident No. 16971) and all dissolved contaminant concentrations are below the NCDEQ Gross Contaminant Levels (GCLs). Soil Sampling CATLIN personnel mobilized to the site on May 3, 2023 and collected one soil sample (SS-1A) approximately three feet south of monitoring well KMW-1. The location of this soil boring was selected based on its proximity to the location of soil sample SS-1, collected on March 19, 1992, as detailed in the 1992 Report of Preliminary Groundwater and Soil Assessment (see Figure 1). The 1992 soil sample (SS-1) contained elevated levels of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (collectively referred to as BTEX). Soil boring SS-1A was advanced using a hand auger to a depth of approximately four feet below land surface (BLS). Samples were collected at one-foot intervals beginning at the ground surface and terminating upon encountering groundwater. Soil samples collected during the boring advancement were screened in the field using a photo-ionization detector (PID). None of the samples indicated elevated PID readings; therefore, the sample with the highest PID reading (0.5 ppm) from above the saturated zone was selected for laboratory analysis. Sample SS-1A was collected at a depth of approximately two feet BLS. The sample was placed in laboratory provided glassware, on ice, and transported under standard Chain-of-Custody protocol to Pace Analytical in Huntersville, North Carolina for chemical analyses of: • MADEP EPH; and • MADEP VPH. Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as "Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes. TNI - The NELAC Institute. ANALYTE QUALIFIERS The lab does not hold NELAC/TNI accreditation for this parameter but other accreditations/certifications may apply.
