Contained herein is a report summarizing Site Check activities for the above referenced facility.
These activities were conducted pursuant to a request by Gina Williams of the NCDEQ Permits
and Inspections branch. Holes and/or failed integrity test results were noted in gasoline and
diesel spill buckets during a recent site inspection and subsequent integrity testing conducted by
Petroleum Equipment Service of Wilson, NC (PES). The D1 and D4 and spill buckets have been
repaired by installation of liners.
On August 10, 2018, Henry Nemargut Engineering Services mobilized personnel and drilling
equipment to the site to assess the condition of in-situ soils in the gasoline and diesel spill bucket
areas. Due to the presence of pea gravel in the UST basins, samples were obtained from auger
borings initiated from the edge of the UST basins. The borings were advanced to allow
collection of soil samples beneath outside of the pea gravel backfill from native soils above the
water table which was noted at a depth of approximately 4’ below grade. The sample obtained
from the gsaoline spill bucket area was labeled U2 and was submitted to Pace Analytical, Inc. for
analyses according to EPA Method TPH-GRO as recommended by the NCDEQ for gasoline
investigations. The samples obtained from the diesel spill bucket areas were labeled D1 and D4
and were submitted to Pace Analytical, Inc. for analyses according to EPA Methods TPH-
DRO/GRO as recommended by the NCDEQ for diesel investigations. The soil samples were
obtained as specified in the collection, preservation, and handling section of the specific method.
Each container was labeled with sample location, analyses to be performed, time, date, and the
sampler's name. They were then placed in a cooler and chilled with ice to approximately 4oC in
preparation for transportation to the analytical laboratory utilizing EPA approved chain of
custody procedures.
The laboratory result for samples D4 and U2 indicated TPH-GRO/DRO levels below laboratory
detection limits and below the NCDEQ action levels for these compound groups. The sample
from the D1 spill bucket area indicated TPH-DRO compounds at a level of 288 mg/kg, above the
NCDEQ Action Level of 100 mg/kg. The D1 sampled yielded a TPH-GRO result of 9.5 mg/kg,
below the Action Level of 50 mg/kg for these compounds. A copy of the laboratory analytical
report and the chain of custody record for the soil samples collected from this site are contained
in Appendix A.
Based on the results from the laboratory soil analyses, Henry Nemargut Engineering Services
recommends that a copy of this report be forwarded to:

1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is
a combined concentration.
