The location of the project site is illustrated on the partial Greenville Southwest Quadrangle U.S.G.S Topographic map which is included as Figure 1. The project site contains one permanent structure used as a convenience store. The site contains (5) 4,000 gallon gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs). The locations of the USTs and the site layout are illustrated on Figure 2. The ownership of these USTs was transferred to Akram Alnamer on September 30, 2016. On August 30, 2010, results from laboratory analyses of a soil sample collected from around a submerged turbine pump verified a release at this facility. A Phase II LSA report was submitted for the site on February 13, 2015 which indicated a GCL violation for benzene in the UST basin area. The site and adjacent properties are used for commercial and residential purposes. Municipal water supply is available to all properties within 1,500’. (1) in-service irrigation well was identified within 1,000’ of the release source at a distance of 750’ from the release source. No irrigation wells were found within 250’ from the release source site. The NCDEQ recently approved a TA for the following tasks to be conducted at this site prior to proceeding with development of a Corrective Action Plan for this facility:  Sample on-site monitoring wells  Submit a Groundwater Monitoring Report 1.2 Scope of Services This Groundwater monitoring report contains documentation concerning the following activities which have been conducted at this facility: o A monitoring well sampling event consisting of sampling of existing monitoring wells. o Laboratory analyses of groundwater samples conducted by Pace Analytical, Inc. of Huntersville, NC. o Estimation of the approximate groundwater flow direction and hydraulic gradient at the site. o Isoconcentration maps illustrating the current contaminant levels in the monitoring wells at the facility. Page - 2 2.0 Field Activities 2.1 Ground Water Flow Direction and Gradient In order to estimate the groundwater flow direction in the vicinity of the petroleum release, elevations of the monitor well casings were measured using surveying equipment. Static water levels were obtained from each of the wells and the data was used to compute a potentiometric surface map which is included as Figure 3. Groundwater data and monitoring well information, which are summarized in Table 1, were also used to estimate the hydraulic gradient at the project site. Using the horizontal distance between the monitor wells and the static water levels, the groundwater was estimated to be flowing in the southeast direction with a horizontal hydraulic gradient of approximately 0.0195 ft/ft. 2.2 Comprehensive Monitor Well Sampling and Analyses On May 27, 2020, (4) existing on-site monitor wells were sampled for analyses utilizing EPA Method 6200B. Before sampling, the monitor wells were purged by removing a minimum of three well volumes to ensure that the samples were representative of the actual groundwater conditions. The monitor wells were developed using disposable plastic balers suspended with unused nylon string. Following development of the groundwater monitoring wells, samples were obtained from the disposable balers. All samples were placed in laboratory supplied glassware, labeled with sample location, analysis to be performed, time, date and sampler's name. The sample jars were then immediately placed in a cooler, chilled with ice to approximately 4oC in preparation of transportation to an analytical laboratory utilizing EPA approved chain-of-custody procedures. Laboratory analytical results indicate the presence of 7 compounds above 2L Standards in monitor well MW-1, with no 6200B compounds noted in MW-2, 3 or 4 at this site. Benzene was detected at a maximum level of 2,410 ug/l in MW-1, above its 2L Standard of 1 ug/l. Naphthalene was detected at a maximum level of 532 ug/l in MW-1, above its 2L Standard of 6 ug/l. Total 6200B compounds were detected at a maximum level of 16,683 ug/l in MW-1. No GCL violations were noted at the site during the May 27, 2020 sampling event. Table 2 summarizes the laboratory analytical results, and Appendix A contains a copy of the laboratory analytical report and chain of custody records. Figure 4 contains a benzene concentration map, Figure 5 illustrates Total 62000B concentrations at the site. 2.4 Plume Development In the only prior sampling event conducted at the site in October 2014, contaminants were reported above 2L Standards in on-site monitoring wells for 11 compounds/compound groups, with Benzene noted at a concentration of 20,000 ug/l, above its GCL Standard of 5,000 ug/l. During the latest monitoring event on May 27, 2020, the Benzene groundwater contaminant level in MW-1 was noted at historically low concentration of 2,410 ug/l, significantly below its GCL Standard. An evaluation of contaminant mass as measured with Total 6200B concentrations confirms that the dissolved petroleum mass at this site has reduced by 82,6% over the 6 year monitoring history of the site, confirming that natural processes have remediated the GCL plume at this site. Page - 3 3.0 Conclusions and Recommendations 3.1 General Summary A groundwater monitoring sampling event has been conducted at the Kash & Karry #11 facility located at 4115 Old Tar Road in Winterville, NC. From a review of all information gathered during this remediation project, Henry Nemargut Engineering Services makes the following conclusions: o Laboratory analytical results indicate the presence of 7 compounds above 2L Standards in monitor well MW-1, with no 6200B compounds noted in MW-2, 3 or 4 at this site. No GCL violations were noted at the site during the May 27, 2020 sampling event. o In the only prior sampling event conducted at the site in October 2014, contaminants were reported above 2L Standards in on-site monitoring wells for 11 compounds/compound groups, with Benzene noted at a concentration of 20,000 ug/l, above its GCL Standard of 5,000 ug/l. During the latest monitoring event on May 27, 2020, the Benzene groundwater contaminant level in MW-1 was noted at historically low concentration of 2,410 ug/l, significantly below its GCL Standard. o An evaluation of contaminant mass as measured with Total 6200B concentrations confirms that the dissolved petroleum mass at this site has reduced by 82,6% over the 6 year monitoring history of the site, confirming that natural processes have remediated the GCL plume at this site. o The groundwater contaminant plume at this site appears to be isolated to the area immediately adjacent to the UST basin at the site. Based on current analytical data, the sudden gasoline release at this site which originated from a STP leak caused a spike in 6200B concentrations during the 2014 sampling event. 3.2 Recommendations Based on information obtained during this sampling event, Henry Nemargut Engineering Services makes the following recommendations for this site: o Incident #38117 which occurred at this site should be closed out following the filing of a Notice of Residual Petroleum and fulfillment of public notification requirements.
