(ATC), on behalf of Worsley Family Holdings, LLC (Worsley), is submitting this sampling report for the Former Craven Oil facility located at 1915 Glenburnie Road, New Bern, North Carolina (Incident #17830). A site topographic map is presented as Figure 1 and site map is presented as Figure 2. Currently, the site operates as an active retail fuel outlet and convenience store. This report includes the laboratory analytical results for the groundwater sampling event of April 7, 2014. 2.0 SITE BACKGROUND Historically, the facility operated as a bulk aboveground storage tank (AST) facility. The former ASTs were owned by Worsley Companies, Inc. (Worsley) of Wilmington, North Carolina. At an unknown date, the site’s AST systems were removed. Site activities conducted to date have included the installation and sampling of seven Type II and one Type III monitoring wells, soil samples collected during soil assessment activities and monitoring well construction, and aquifer slug tests. Interim remedial actions have included the excavation of approximately 1,155 tons of petroleum-impacted soil from the subject facility. Previous reports submitted include: Comprehensive Site Assessment (CSA) Report, dated November 1999, Clark Environmental Services, P.C. (CES); CSA Report Addendum, dated June 16, 2000, Delta Environmental Consultants, Inc. (Delta); Corrective Action Plan (CAP) and addendum, dated December 29, 2000, and October 3, 2001, by Delta; Groundwater Monitoring Reports submitted between May 2002 and March 2007 by Delta; Groundwater Monitoring Reports submitted by Environmental Services & Solutions, PLLC (ESS) submitted March 2009 and August 2010. In August 2010, Worsley awarded an environmental services contract to ATC for continuing environmental services at the site. This report describes the groundwater sampling results for April 7, 2014 sampling event. Groundwater Monitoring Report April 29, 2014 NCDENR Incident No. 17830 ATC Project No. 45.40675.2005 Page 2 3.0 GROUNDWATER MONITORING 3.1 Groundwater Elevations On April 7, 2014, ATC collected static water level measurements from monitoring wells MW-3A, MW-4A, and MW-7A. Depths to water measurements were collected using an electronic oil/water interface probe. The groundwater depths were converted to relative elevations using an assumed datum of 100 feet relative to an arbitrary on-site benchmark. Monitoring well construction details are included in Table 1. Current and historical groundwater elevation data are included in Table 2. A groundwater elevation contour map based on the April 2014 static water level data is included as Figure 3. Based on the recent groundwater level measurements, groundwater flows east across the site. 3.2 Analytical Results On April 7, 2014, groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells MW-3A, MW-4A, and MW-7A. Groundwater samples were collected into laboratory-approved containers, packed in ice and delivered under chain-of-custody to Pace Analytical Services (Pace), in Huntersville, North Carolina, for analyses. Groundwater samples were analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via EPA Method 6200B including methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) and isopropyl ether (IPE). A summary of the recent groundwater analytical data is presented in Table 3 and a historical summary of groundwater analytical data is presented in Table 4. The laboratory analytical results from the April 7, 2014 sampling event indicates that dissolved naphthalene exceeded its established Title 15A NCAC 2L.0202 (2L) standard in the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-4A and MW-7A. A contaminants of concern map is included as Figure 4. A copy of the laboratory analytical report is included as Appendix A. It should be noted an attempt was made to the sample the water supply well located at Martin’s Auto Repair; however, the owner would not grant ATC personnel access to the well. A summary of historical groundwater analytical data for the water supply well is presented in Table 5. Groundwater Monitoring Report April 29, 2014 NCDENR Incident No. 17830 ATC Project No. 45.40675.2005 Page 3 4.0 CONCLUSIONS ATC has performed a groundwater sampling event at the former Craven Oil facility in New Bern, North Carolina. Based on field activities, observations, and groundwater analytical results, ATC concludes the following: • Depth to groundwater measurements ranged from 2.29 feet to 2.51 feet below ground surface in MW-3A and MW-7A, respectively. The inferred shallow groundwater flow direction across the site is to the east. • Free product has not been associated with the release. • The site is not located within a designated wellhead protection area. • The site is connected to the public water supply system. The surrounding properties have the option of being connected to the public water supply system. • Dissolved target compound concentrations appear to be decreasing at the facility. • An attempt was made to sample the water supply well at Martin’s Auto Repair. The property owner would not allow ATC access to the well to collect a sample. The person at the repair facility stated the repair facility was connected to the public water supply system. Based on the above information, it appears impacts of petroleum contaminant concentrations are limited to the site and the area of the former fueling system. ATC recommends continuation of annual groundwater sampling activities. represents the factor applied to the reported data due to changes in sample preparation, dilution ofthe sample aliquot, or moisture content. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PRL - Pace Reporting Limit. RL - Reporting Limit. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine (8270 listed analyte) decomposes to Azobenzene. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2-Chloroethylvinyl ether, Styrene, and Vinyl chloride.
