Free Product Evaluation Prepared on: November 10, 2020 New Dixie Mart #226 Project Manager: William Regenthal, PG GRI Project No. 4841 ii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY New Dixie Mart #226 is located at 4917 Raleigh Road Parkway West in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina. The site is currently owned by New Dixie Oil Corporation and is currently occupied by a used car dealership. The adjoining properties are commercial. Two 12,000-gallon gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs), associated dispensers and product piping were removed from the site on June 26, 2018. The removed USTs were located in one basin in the rear of the former store. A release was confirmed upon on-site screening of soil removed during the UST closure activities. The site risk classification is currently ranked as high risk due to two potable water supply wells being located within a 1,000-foot radius of the site. On September 30, 2020, two monitoring wells were gauged for free product. A free product evaluation was conducted on MW-4 following hand bailing. Free product was also hand bailed from MW-8. During the evaluation, 1.00 gallon of free product and 3.00 gallons of petroleum impacted ground water were removed from MW-4 and MW-8. After hand bailing free product from MW-4 and MW-8, absorbent booms were installed into both wells. Based on this information, the risk classification for the site should remain high risk. It is recommended that a Mobile Multi-Phase Extraction event should be conducted at the site on MW-4 and MW-8, as well as any monitoring well which had contaminant concentrations above the Gross Contamination Levels during the last sampling event. Semi-annual ground water monitoring should be continued. The next sampling event is tentatively scheduled for February 2021. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Free Product Evaluation Prepared on: November 10, 2020 New Dixie Mart #226 Project Manager: William Regenthal, PG GRI Project No. 4841 1 1.0 SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION Geological Resources, Inc. (GRI) presents the results of the September 2020 Free Product Evaluation event at the New Dixie Mart #226 site; located at 4917 Raleigh Road Parkway West in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina (Figure 1). These activities were conducted in accordance with GRI Proposal No. 20-524, which was submitted to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) on September 21, 2020, and was approved as Task Authorization No. 46344-04 on September 25, 2020. State correspondence has been included as Appendix A. The site is currently owned by New Dixie Oil Corporation and operates as a used car dealership. Two 12,000-gallon gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs), associated dispensers and product piping were removed from the site on June 26, 2018. A release was discovered during the June 2018 UST closure activities. UST owner/operator information and UST system information are included as Tables 1 and 2, respectively. The Registered Tank Report is shown below: The site and adjoining properties are commercial. The site contains one building and is primarily capped with concrete and asphalt. The overall topography at the site is relatively flat. No surface water bodies were identified within a 500-foot radius of the site. Thirteen Type II monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-13) and two Type III monitoring well (TW-1 and TW-2) were installed at the site during Limited Site Assessment (LSA) and Comprehensive Site Assessment (CSA) activities. A Site Map showing the locations of the monitoring wells and the structures on-site has been included as Figure 2. On July 26, 2020, GRI personnel conducted a receptor survey at the site. Three water supply wells were identified within a 1,500-foot radius of the site. Two potable wells (WSW-1 and WSW-3) were identified within 1,000 feet of the site. No water supply wells were identified within a 250-foot radius of the source area. No surface water bodies were identified within 500 feet of the source area. Municipal water is available to the site and the surrounding properties. Water supply well information is presented in Table 3. Adjacent property owner information is presented in Table 4. A Site Vicinity Map showing the locations of water supply wells and adjacent properties has been included as Figure 3. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Free Product Evaluation Prepared on: November 10, 2020 New Dixie Mart #226 Project Manager: William Regenthal, PG GRI Project No. 4841 2 A Corrective Action Plan (CAP) has not been developed for this site. 2.0 FREE PRODUCT REMOVAL During the August 2020 sampling event, free product was discovered in MW-4 and MW-8. On September 30, 2020, MW-4 and MW-8 were both gauged for free product. Free product thicknesses of 1.09 and 0.39 feet were measured in MW-4 and MW-8, respectively. Following gauging, MW-4 was selected for a free product evaluation since it had the greatest free product thickness. MW-4 was hand bailed until all the free product was removed and then monitored to determine the free product recovery rate. Free product was first measurable at 15 seconds into the test but never fully recovered during the duration of the 90-minute evaluation. During the free product evaluation, approximately 0.75 gallons and 0.25 gallons of free product were removed from MW-4 and MW-8, respectively. In addition to the recovered free product, a total of 3.00 gallons of petroleum contact water was removed from both wells. Well construction and gauging information is summarized in Table 5. The free product recovery event conducted by GRI has been summarized in Tables 6 and 7. The free product recovery costs have been summarized in Table 8. The free product evaluation data has been provided in Table 9. A graph showing the results of the free product evaluation is included as Appendix B. Upon completion of the free product evaluation and recovery activities, absorbent booms were installed in MW-4 and MW-8. 3.0 NATURAL ATTENUATION / NATURAL SOURCE ZONE DEPLETION STATUS No natural attenuation monitoring plan is in place at this time. 4.0 CONCLUSIONS  On September 30, 2020, free product thicknesses of 1.09 and 0.39 feet were measured in MW-4 and MW-8, respectively.  A free product evaluation was conducted on MW-4 following hand bailing. Upon completion of the free product evaluation, free product was hand bailed from MW-4 and MW-8.  Free product was first measurable at 15 seconds into the test but never fully recovered during the duration of the 90-minute evaluation.  During the free product evaluation, approximately 0.75 gallons and 0.25 gallons of free product were removed from MW-4 and MW-8, respectively. In addition, a total of 3.00 gallons of petroleum contact water was removed from both wells.  Based on this information, the risk classification for the site should remain high risk. It is recommended that a Mobile Multi-Phase Extraction event should be conducted on MW-4 and MW-8, as well as any well that had contaminant concentrations above the Gross Contamination Levels during the August 2020 sampling event. Semi-annual ground water monitoring should be continued. The next sampling event is tentatively scheduled for February 2021. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc.
