The former Wilson Petroleum Bulk Plant was located at 420 South Douglas Street in Wilson, Wilson
County, North Carolina. The adjoining properties are commercial. In 1988, approximately 1,400 gallons
of petroleum was released to the ground surface from the AST system. In 1990, a ground water treatment
system was installed at the site and operated until 1995. Semi-annual and annual ground water sampling
has been conducted at the site since 1995. The site is located within the city limits of Wilson. No structures
remain on site and property ownership has transferred to the City of Wilson.
On September 21, 2018, six monitoring wells were gauged, purged and/or sampled. The concentration of
MTBE in MW-2 exceeded the maximum allowable concentration (MAC). No other detectable
concentrations exceeded the MACs.
Based on this information, ground water concentrations continue to exceed the MACs. Therefore, annual
monitoring should be continued.

1.0 SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION
The former Wilson Petroleum Bulk Plant was located at 420 South Douglas Street in Wilson, Wilson
County, North Carolina (Figure 1). According to the “Annual Status Report” dated September 2, 2011,
submitted by Antea Group, approximately 1,400 gallons of petroleum were released to the ground surface
from the AST system in 1988. In 1990, a ground water treatment system was installed at the site and
operated until 1995. Semi-annual and annual ground water sampling has been conducted at the site since
1995. Please refer to previous submittals for additional historical information regarding the site. Please
note, the buildings on the site property have been demolished and the property ownership has transferred
to the City of Wilson.
2.0 CURRENT SITE ASSESSMENT
The purpose of this report is to present the results of ground water sampling activities conducted on
September 21, 2018 at the former Wilson Petroleum Bulk Plant site. The activities were conducted in
accordance with GRI Proposal Number 18-119. The scope of work includes obtaining current ground water
quality data.
3.0 GROUND WATER SAMPLING ACTIVITIES
3.1 Site Hydrogeology
On September 21, 2018, six Type II monitoring wells (MW-2, MW-5 through MW-8, and MW-12) were
gauged, purged, and sampled. Monitoring well MW-4 could not be located during the sampling event.
The depths to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells during the September 2018 sampling event
ranged from 1.59 to 4.57 feet below the tops of well casings. Ground water elevations in the Type II
monitoring wells relative to a temporary benchmark assumed by the previous consultant ranged from 46.27
to 49.41 feet. Based on these data, the ground water flow direction at the site is toward the southwest. The
horizontal hydraulic gradient between MW-2 and MW-7 was 0.01 feet per foot toward the southwest.
A Site Map showing the locations of the monitoring wells is included as Figure 3. A Water Table Surface
Map for the September 21, 2018 sampling event has been included as Figure 4. A summary of well
construction information including ground water elevation data is presented in Table 1. Historical gauging
data are included in Appendix A.
2
3.2 Ground Water Sampling
Laboratory analyses were performed on the ground water samples collected on September 21, 2018 from
the monitoring wells for volatile organic compounds by EPA Method 602.
4.0 GROUND WATER QUALITY
MTBE reported in the ground water sample collected from MW-2 exceeded the maximum allowable
concentration (MAC) but did not exceed the gross contaminant level (GCL) specified in T15A NCAC
2L.0202. No other detectable contaminant concentrations exceeded the MACs or the GCLs. A Ground
Water Quality Map based on data from the September 21, 2018 sampling event has been included as Figure
5. A summary of historical ground water quality data is included in Appendix B. A complete laboratory
report has been included in Appendix C.
5.0 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
The site is located within the city limits of Wilson. No structures remain on-site and the property
ownership has transferred to the City of Wilson.
The average depth to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells in February was 3.65 feet. The
general ground water flow direction at the site was southwest with an average horizontal hydraulic
gradient of 0.01 feet per foot.
MTBE reported in the ground water sample collected from MW-2 exceeded the MAC but did not
exceed the GCL. No samples were collected from MW-4 because the well could not be located.
No other detectable contaminant concentrations exceeded the MACs or the GCLs in samples
collected from the site.
Based on this information, ground water concentrations continue to exceed the MACs. Therefore,
annual monitoring should continue.
6.0 LIMITATIONS
This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of Wilson Petroleum Company, Inc. for specific
application to the referenced site in Wilson County, North Carolina. The assessment was conducted based
on the scope of work and level of effort specified by NCDENR and with resources adequate only for that
scope of work. Our findings have been developed in accordance with generally accepted standards of
geology and hydrogeology practices in the State of North Carolina, available information, and our
3
professional judgment. No other warranty is expressed or implied.
The data that are presented in this report are indicative of conditions that existed at the precise locations
sampled and at the time the samples were collected. In addition, the data obtained from samples would be
interpreted as being meaningful with respect to parameters indicated in the laboratory report. No additional
information can logically be inferred from these data.
