The adjoining properties are commercial. In 1988, approximately 1,400 gallons of petroleum was released to the ground surface from the AST system. In 1990, a ground water treatment system was installed at the site and operated until 1995. Semi-annual and annual ground water sampling has been conducted at the site since 1995. The site is located within the city limits of Wilson. No structures remain on site and property ownership has transferred to the City of Wilson. Ground water monitoring activities were conducted in May 2015. Monitoring wells MW-1, MW-4, MW- 10, and MW-11 were not located during sampling activities and are assumed to have been destroyed during site renovations. Detectable concentrations of benzene and/or MTBE that exceeded the maximum allowable concentrations (MACs) specified in T15A NCAC 2L.0202 were found in the samples collected from MW-2 and MW-8; and, concentrations of lead in samples collected from MW-2, MW-5 through MW-8, and MW-12 exceeded the MAC. No detectable concentrations exceeded the gross contaminant levels. Based on this information, ground water monitoring is required to continue until the ground water contamination has attenuated below the MACs or until risked based rules are applied to this incident. The next ground water monitoring event should occur in March 2016. According to the “Annual Status Report” dated September 2, 2011, submitted by Antea Group, approximately 1,400 gallons of petroleum were released to the ground surface from the AST system in 1988. In 1990, a ground water treatment system was installed at the site and operated until 1995. Semi-annual and annual ground water sampling has been conducted at the site since 1995. Please refer to previous submittals for additional historical information regarding the site. Please note, the buildings on the site property have been demolished and the property ownership has transferred to the City of Wilson. 2.0 CURRENT SITE ASSESSMENT The purpose of this report is to present the results of ground water sampling activities conducted on May 20, 2015 at the former Wilson Petroleum Bulk Plant site. The activities were conducted in accordance with GRI Proposal Number 15-184. The scope of work includes obtaining current ground water quality data. 3.0 GROUND WATER SAMPLING ACTIVITIES 3.1 Site Hydrogeology On May 20, 2015, six Type II monitoring wells (MW-2, MW-5 through MW-8, and MW-12) were gauged, purged, and sampled. Monitoring wells MW-1, MW-4, MW-10, and MW-11 were not located during sampling activities and are assumed to have been destroyed during site renovations. The depths to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells during the May 2015 sampling event ranged from 2.06 to 6.15 feet below the tops of well casings. Ground water elevations in the Type II monitoring wells relative to a temporary benchmark assumed by the previous consultant ranged from 45.77 to 48.04 feet. Based on these data, the ground water flow direction at the site is toward the southwest. The horizontal hydraulic gradient between MW-2 and MW-7 was 0.01 feet per foot toward the southwest. A Site Map showing the locations of the monitoring wells is included as Figure 3. A Water Table Surface Map for the May 20, 2015 sampling event has been included as Figure 4. A summary of well construction information including ground water elevation data is presented in Table 1. Historical gauging data are included in Appendix A. 2 3.2 Ground Water Sampling Laboratory analyses were performed on the ground water samples collected on May 20, 2015 from the monitoring wells for volatile organic compounds by EPA Method 6200 and for lead by EPA Method 6010. 4.0 GROUND WATER QUALITY Concentrations of benzene and/or MTBE that exceeded the maximum allowable concentrations (MACs) specified in T15A NCAC 2L.0202 were reported in samples collected from MW-2 and MW-8. Concentrations of lead in samples collected from MW-2, MW-5 through MW-8, and MW-12 exceeded the MACs. No contaminant concentrations exceeded the gross contaminant levels (GCLs). A Ground Water Quality Map based on data from the May 20, 2015 sampling event has been included as Figure 5. A summary of historical ground water quality data is included in Appendix B. A complete laboratory report has been included in Appendix C. 5.0 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS  The site is located within the city limits of Wilson. No structures remain on-site and the property ownership has transferred to the City of Wilson.  Monitoring wells MW-1, MW-4, MW-10, and MW-11 were not located during sampling activities and are assumed to have been destroyed during site renovations.  The average depth to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells in May was 4.46 feet. The general ground water flow direction at the site was southwest with an average horizontal hydraulic gradient of 0.01 feet per foot.  Concentrations of benzene and/or MTBE reported in MW-2 and MW-8 exceeded the MACs. Concentrations of lead in MW-2, MW-5 through MW-8, and MW-12 exceeded the MACs. No contaminant concentrations exceeded the GCLs.  Based on this information, ground water monitoring is required to continue until the ground water contamination has attenuated below the MACs or until risked based rules can be applied to this incident. The next ground water monitoring event should occur in March 2016. 6.0 LIMITATIONS This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of Wilson Petroleum Company, Inc. for specific 3 application to the referenced site in Wilson County, North Carolina. The assessment was conducted based on the scope of work and level of effort specified by NCDENR and with resources adequate only for that scope of work. Our findings have been developed in accordance with generally accepted standards of geology and hydrogeology practices in the State of North Carolina, available information, and our professional judgment. No other warranty is expressed or implied. The data that are presented in this report are indicative of conditions that existed at the precise locations sampled and at the time the samples were collected. In addition, the data obtained from samples would be interpreted as being meaningful with respect to parameters indicated in the laboratory report. No additional information can logically be inferred from these data.
