(ATC) was retained by Circle K Stores, Inc. (formerly The Pantry) to perform groundwater sampling activities at the Pantry #3079 site located at 5102 Dortches Boulevard in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The site location is shown on Figure 1 and the site details are shown on Figure 2. This report presents a summary of the installation and maintenance of Biosocks in select wells and the laboratory analytical results for the groundwater sampling event conducted in June 2017. 2.0 SITE BACKGROUND The Pantry #3079 (DBA Zip Mart #6) is a convenience and gasoline retail store located at 5102 Dortches Boulevard (Highway 43 at I-95) in Rocky Mount, Nash County, North Carolina. The site is currently active and contains three 12,000-gallon gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs) and one 8,000-gallon diesel UST. Table 1 provides a summary of the current and former UST systems at the site. In February 1989, four 12,000-gallon USTs were removed from the Zip Mart #6 facility. Analytical results of the soil samples collected from the UST bed indicated elevated levels of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in both the gasoline and diesel range. Between April 1989 and May 1990, Applied Environmental Services, Inc. installed fifteen monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-15). On July 2, 1990, Applied Environmental Services, Inc. submitted a Groundwater Assessment – Technical and Field Data Report and a Remedial Action Plan and Engineering Report. In July 1998, after discovery of the suspected release, The Pantry, Inc. assumed store operations from Stallings Oil Company, Inc. Subsequently, environmental services were transferred to SEI Environmental, Inc. and SEI Engineering and Geological Services, P.C. (formerly SPATCO Engineering and Geological Services, P.C.) (SEI). During September and November 1999 and again in April 2002, a 1,500-foot receptor survey was conducted which revealed the presence of two potable water supply wells. Public water is supplied to the area. An intermittent stream is located approximately 1,500 feet west of the subject property. Refer to Figure 3 for a site vicinity map. Information regarding properties Pantry #3079 – Active Remediation Monitoring Report August 4, 2017 NCDEQ Incident No. 4028 2 with water supply wells is summarized in Table 2. On December 10, 1999, SEI submitted a Pre-Corrective Action Plan (CAP) Groundwater Monitoring Report. In February and March 2000, aggressive fluid vapor recovery (AFVR) was conducted on monitoring well MW-1 and recovery well RW-1, which have historically contained free product. The AFVR events were successful in removing approximately 5,605 gallons of contaminated groundwater, 62.03 pounds of petroleum vapors, and an immeasurable amount of free product. Free product has not been detected in any of the groundwater monitoring wells since March 23, 2000. On April 18, 2000, SEI submitted a Free Product Recovery Report. On November 21, 2000, three type II monitoring wells (MW-12A, MW-16, and MW-17) were installed. On August 15, 2001, two additional type II monitoring wells (MW-18 and MW-19) were installed. Monitoring well construction details are summarized in Table 3. On April 30, 2002, SEI submitted a Natural Attenuation CAP. On February 17, 2009, MDSA installed four additional type II monitoring wells (MW-19, MW-20, MW-21 and MW-22) in the apparent down gradient location of the release. The additional monitoring wells were installed in an effort to further delineate the extent of the release. Groundwater sampling events were conducted in July 2009, February 2010, July 2010, March 2011, and July 2011. This report presents a summary of the installation and maintenance of Biosocks in select wells and the laboratory analytical results for the groundwater sampling event conducted in June 2017. 3.0 BIOSOCK INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE On April 12, 2017, ATC personnel placed Biosocks in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-11, MW-13, MW-14, MW-17, and MW-18 to assist with natural attenuation activities. 4.0 GROUNDWATER CHARACTERIZATION 4.1 Groundwater Levels Groundwater levels were measured during the recent groundwater sampling event performed on June 8, 2017. An oil/water interface probe was used to gauge depth-to-water and free product Pantry #3079 – Active Remediation Monitoring Report August 4, 2017 NCDEQ Incident No. 4028 3 thickness, if encountered, from the top of each well casing. Free product was not encountered during the June 2017 event. Groundwater elevations ranged from 5.36 feet to 17.00 feet below ground surface (bgs) in monitoring wells MW-8 and MW-13, respectively. Monitoring well construction details are summarized in Table 3 and groundwater elevation data from the June 2017 sampling event is included in Table 4. A groundwater elevation map is included as Figure 4. It appears groundwater flows toward the west across the site. 4.2 Free Product Free product was not detected in any of the monitoring wells sampled during the June 2017 groundwater sampling event. Free product has been previously detected in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-8, and recovery well RW-1. 4.3 Groundwater Quality Groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-8, MW-11, MW-13, MW-14, MW-17, and MW-18 on June 8, 2017. A disposable polyethylene bailer was used to purge a minimum of three well volumes from the monitoring wells prior to sample collection. Samples were placed in laboratory supplied sample containers and shipped on ice via overnight courier to Con-test Analytical Laboratory (Con-test) in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Groundwater samples were analyzed for volatile organic compounds by EPA Method 6200B. The laboratory analytical results from the June 2017 sampling event indicated that several dissolved target compound concentrations were detected above established 2L Standards in the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-11, MW-13, MW-14, MW-17, and MW-18. It should be noted that dissolved benzene concentrations exceeded established Gross Contamination Levels (GCL) in monitoring well MW-1. Analytical results for the monitoring well samples collected in June 2017 are summarized in Table 5. Historical groundwater analytical data are summarized in Table 6. A dissolved benzene isoconcentration contour map is included as Figure 5. Other contaminants of concern are depicted on Figure 6. A copy of the laboratory analytical report is included in Appendix A. Pantry #3079 – Active Remediation Monitoring Report August 4, 2017 NCDEQ Incident No. 4028 4 5.0 SUMMARY During this reporting period, ATC installed and maintained Biosocks in select monitoring wells and a groundwater sampling event at the referenced facility. Based on the results of ATC’s assessment, the following conclusions are made: • Groundwater at the site flows generally toward the west. • Free product was not detected in any of the monitoring wells sampled during June 2017. • Biosocks have been installed and maintained in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-11, MW-13, MW-14, MW-17, and MW-18 to assist with natural attenuation activities. • Laboratory analytical results indicated that several dissolved target compound concentrations were detected above established 2L Standards in the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-11, MW-13, MW-14, MW-17, and MW-18. • Laboratory analytical results indicated that dissolved benzene concentrations were detected above established GCL Standards in the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-1. Based on groundwater analytical results, ATC recommends the continued installation and maintenance of Biosocks in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-11, MW-13, MW-14, MW-17, and MW-18, on a quarterly basis, to assist with natural attenuation activities. Additionally, ATC recommends continued semi-annual groundwater sampling and reporting. FLAG/QUALIFIER SUMMARY *QC result is outside of established limits. Wide recovery limits established for difficult compound. Wide RPD limits established for difficult compound. #Data exceeded client recommended or regulatory level Percent recoveries and relative percent differences (RPDs) are determined by the software using values in the calculation which have not been rounded. No results have been blank subtracted unless specified in the case narrative section. Detected but below the Reporting Limit (lowest calibration standard); therefore, result is an estimated concentration (CLP J-Flag). J Laboratory fortified blank/laboratory control sample recovery and duplicate recovery are outside of control limits. Reported value for this compound is likely to be biased on the low side. L-04 Elevated reporting limit due to high concentration of target compounds.RL-11 [TOC_1]Flag/Qualifier Summary[TOC] Page 32 of 37 Table of Contents 39 Spruce Street * East Longmeadow, MA 01028 * FAX 413/525-6405 * TEL. 413/525-2332 CertificationsAnalyte CERTIFICATIONS Certified Analyses included in this Report SM21-22 6200B in Water NCAcetone NCBenzene NCBromobenzene NCBromochloromethane NCBromodichloromethane NCBromoform NCBromomethane NC2-Butanone (MEK) NCn-Butylbenzene NCsec-Butylbenzene NCtert-Butylbenzene NCCarbon Tetrachloride NCChlorobenzene NCEthanol NCChlorodibromomethane NCChloroethane NCChloroform NCChloromethane NC2-Chlorotoluene NC4-Chlorotoluene NC1,2-Dibromoethane (EDB) NC1,2-Dichlorobenzene NC1,3-Dichlorobenzene NC1,4-Dichlorobenzene NCDichlorodifluoromethane (Freon 12) NC1,1-Dichloroethane NC1,2-Dichloroethane NC1,1-Dichloroethylene NCcis-1,2-Dichloroethylene NCtrans-1,2-Dichloroethylene NC1,2-Dichloropropane NC1,3-Dichloropropane NC2,2-Dichloropropane NC1,1-Dichloropropene NCcis-1,3-Dichloropropene NCtrans-1,3-Dichloropropene NCDiisopropyl Ether (DIPE) NCEthylbenzene NC2-Hexanone (MBK) NCIsopropylbenzene (Cumene) NCp-Isopropyltoluene (p-Cymene) NCMethyl tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE) NCMethylene Chloride NC4-Methyl-2-pentanone (MIBK) NCNaphthalene NCn-Propylbenzene NCStyrene [TOC_1]Certifications[TOC] Page 33 of 37 Table of Contents 39 Spruce Street * East Longmeadow, MA 01028 * FAX 413/525-6405 * TEL. 413/525-2332 CertificationsAnalyte CERTIFICATIONS Certified Analyses included in this Report SM21-22 6200B in Water NC1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane NCTetrachloroethylene NCToluene NC1,2,3-Trichlorobenzene NC1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene NC1,1,1-Trichloroethane NC1,1,2-Trichloroethane NCTrichloroethylene NCTrichlorofluoromethane (Freon 11) NC1,2,3-Trichloropropane NC1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene NC1,3,5-Trimethylbenzene NCVinyl Acetate NCVinyl Chloride NCm+p Xylene NCo-Xylene The CON-TEST Environmental Laboratory operates under the following certifications and accreditations: Code Description Number Expires 100033AIHA-LAP, LLC - ISO17025:2005AIHA 02/1/2018 M-MA100Massachusetts DEPMA 06/30/2017 PH-0567Connecticut Department of Publilc HealthCT 09/30/2017 10899 NELAPNew York State Department of HealthNY 04/1/2018 2516 NELAPNew Hampshire Environmental LabNH-S 02/5/2018 LAO00112Rhode Island Department of HealthRI 12/30/2017 652North Carolina Div. of Water QualityNC 12/31/2017 MA007 NELAPNew Jersey DEPNJ 06/30/2017 E871027 NELAPFlorida Department of HealthFL 06/30/2018 LL015036Vermont Department of Health Lead LaboratoryVT 07/30/2017 2011028State of MaineME 06/9/2019 460217Commonwealth of VirginiaVA 12/14/2017 2557 NELAPNew Hampshire Environmental LabNH-P 09/6/2017 VT-255716Vermont Department of Health Drinking WaterVT-DW 06/12/2018 Page 34 of 37 Table of Contents Page 35 of 37 Table of Contents Page 36 of 37 Table of Contents Page 37 of 37 Table of Contents
