DeVane Aaron C. Long, P.E. Engineer in Training Principal Engineer Groundwater Monitoring Report January 24, 2023 Gordon Iron & Metal NCDEQ No. 9812 Statesville, North Carolina Excel No. 20036 EXCEL CIVIL & ENVIRONMENTAL ASSOCIATES, PLLC  PROJECT SUMMARY Groundwater quality samples were collected from monitoring and recovery wells RW- 5, MRW-6, MRW-7, MRW-8, MRW-9 and the UST well on December 16, 2022, and laboratory analyzed for purgeable aromatic hydrocarbons (BTEX) by EPA Method 602 including MTBE and IPE, and Poly-nuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) by EPA Method 610. Prior to sampling, all wells were gauged with an oil-water interface probe to check for the presence of free product. During the December 2022 sampling event, no free product was observed at any of the monitoring and recovery well locations. The results of the laboratory data indicated the following constituents were detected above their respective NCAC 2L Standards: o Benzene: RW-5, MRW-7, MRW-8 and UST Well o Total Xylenes: MRW-7 o Naphthalene: RW-5, UST Well EXECUTIVE SUMMARY & RECOMMENDATIONS To date, Excel has conducted two 100-hour Mobile Multi-Phase Extraction (MMPE) events at the location of monitoring well UST-Well and two AFVR events one at the UST-Well and one event at recovery well RW-5. During the MMPE events, approximately 200-gallons (flow-meter amount) of product/water mixture were recovered as total fluids. During the initial AFVR event, approximately 146-gallons of petroleum impacted water was recovered from the UST-Well, with approximately75-gallons of product/water mixture recovered from RW-5; In September 2013, Excel installed a pneumatic skimming system. The system consists of four two-inch diameter monitoring/recovery wells (MRW-6 thru MRW-9) and one submersible pneumatic skimming assembly; A review of the liquid level data during the reporting period indicates free product evident in monitor wells RW-5 and UST-Well. Free product thicknesses ranged from non-detect to 0.02 feet during the reporting period. Approximately 2.5 gallons of free product were recovered during the reporting period. The free product recovery system compressor operated the entire reporting period with the exception of one month for approximately 80 percent of the reporting period. Based on the current data, we recommend shutting down the system compressor and monitoring the site for free product rebound for the next three months. Groundwater Monitoring Report January 24, 2023 Gordon Iron & Metal NCDEQ No. 9812 Statesville, North Carolina Excel No. 20036 Excel Civil & Environmental Associates, PLLC CONCLUSIONS / RECOMMENDATIONS  Based on the historical presence of free product in the onsite monitoring and recovery wells, the site is classified as “Intermediate” risk. The current groundwater constituent levels were found to be above NCAC 2L standards for benzene, xylenes and naphthalene but below their respective GCL standard. Additionally, free product was encountered at the location of monitor/recovery wells RW-5 and the UST Well during the reporting period.  Constituent concentrations have decreased overall since the initial sampling round conducted in 2016 for all wells sampled with the exception of MRW-7 where BTEX levels have increased 19.5%. BTEX concentrations have reduced 99.6% and 99.8% for MRW-6 and MRW-9, respectively. All COCs reported for MRW-6 and MRW-9 are below NCAC 2L standards.  At this time, based on the information in this report, we recommend shutting down the system compressor and monitoring the site for free product rebound for the next three months. Groundwater Monitoring Report January 24, 2023 L. Gordon Iron & Metal Facility NCDEQ No. 9812 Statesville, North Carolina Excel No. 20036 EXCEL CIVIL & ENVIRONMENTAL ASSOCIATES, PLLC  PROJECT INFORMATION PRIMARY CONSULTANT: Excel Civil & Environmental Associates, PLLC PROJECT MANAGER: Aaron Long CLIENT CONTACT: Scott Powell SITE HISTORY: In February 1992, one 15,000-gallon diesel UST was removed from the property by Herman’s Tank Removal Company of Kannapolis, North Carolina. Soil samples collected at the time of assessment, were found to be above the NCDENR Action Levels for both TPH-GRO & DRO. The excavated soils were returned to the basin following closure activities. A Comprehensive Site Assessment (CSA) was completed by W.Z. Baumgartner & Associates, Inc. (WZB) of Brentwood, Tennessee in August 1993. A Corrective Action Plan (CAP) recommending the use of Air Sparging & Soil Vapor Extraction technologies at the site was completed by WZB in November 1994. It appears the system was installed at the site and operated until at least April 2000 at which time the NCDENR authorized the system to be shutdown. It appears that free product was first encountered at the site in January 1995 at the location of wells W-3 and W-4. Free product recovery consisting of hand bailing by onsite staff and WZB has occurred on a monthly basis since 1995 to October 2000. In December 2000 Excel conducted an 8-hour AFVR at the location of W-6. Approximately 146-gallons of product/water mixture were recovered during the event with no reduction of free product. In September 2013, Excel installed a pneumatic skimming system as per the approved New Technology Report submitted on December 10, 2012. The system consists of four (4) 2” diameter monitoring/recovery wells (MRW-6 thru MRW-9) and one submersible pneumatic skimming assembly. This is not intended as a comprehensive explanation, and if you have additional questions please contact your project representative. Results Disclaimer - Information that may be provided by the customer, and contained within this report, include Permit Limits, Project Name, Sample ID, Sample Matrix, Sample Preservation, Field Blanks, Field Spikes, Field Duplicates, On-Site Data, Sampling Collection Dates/Times, and Sampling Location. Results relate to the accuracy of this information provided, and as the samples are received. Abbreviations and Definitions MDL Method Detection Limit. RDL Reported Detection Limit. Rec.Recovery. RPD Relative Percent Difference. SDG Sample Delivery Group. (S) Surrogate (Surrogate Standard) - Analytes added to every blank, sample, Laboratory Control Sample/Duplicate and Matrix Spike/Duplicate; used to evaluate analytical efficiency by measuring recovery. Surrogates are not expected to be detected in all environmental media. U Not detected at the Reporting Limit (or MDL where applicable). Analyte The name of the particular compound or analysis performed. Some Analyses and Methods will have multiple analytes reported. Dilution If the sample matrix contains an interfering material, the sample preparation volume or weight values differ from the standard, or if concentrations of analytes in the sample are higher than the highest limit of concentration that the laboratory can accurately report, the sample may be diluted for analysis. If a value different than 1 is used in this field, the result reported has already been corrected for this factor. Limits These are the target % recovery ranges or % difference value that the laboratory has historically determined as normal for the method and analyte being reported. Successful QC Sample analysis will target all analytes recovered or duplicated within these ranges. Qualifier This column provides a letter and/or number designation that corresponds to additional information concerning the result reported. If a Qualifier is present, a definition per Qualifier is provided within the Glossary and Definitions page and potentially a discussion of possible implications of the Qualifier in the Case Narrative if applicable. Result The actual analytical final result (corrected for any sample specific characteristics) reported for your sample. If there was no measurable result returned for a specific analyte, the result in this column may state “ND” (Not Detected) or “BDL” (Below Detectable Levels). The information in the results column should always be accompanied by either an MDL (Method Detection Limit) or RDL (Reporting Detection Limit) that defines the lowest value that the laboratory could detect or report for this analyte. Uncertainty (Radiochemistry)Confidence level of 2 sigma. Case Narrative (Cn) A brief discussion about the included sample results, including a discussion of any non-conformances to protocol observed either at sample receipt by the laboratory from the field or during the analytical process. If present, there will be a section in the Case Narrative to discuss the meaning of any data qualifiers used in the report. Quality Control Summary (Qc) This section of the report includes the results of the laboratory quality control analyses required by procedure or analytical methods to assist in evaluating the validity of the results reported for your samples. These analyses are not being performed on your samples typically, but on laboratory generated material. Sample Chain of Custody (Sc) This is the document created in the field when your samples were initially collected. This is used to verify the time and date of collection, the person collecting the samples, and the analyses that the laboratory is requested to perform. This chain of custody also documents all persons (excluding commercial shippers) that have had control or possession of the samples from the time of collection until delivery to the laboratory for analysis. Sample Results (Sr) This section of your report will provide the results of all testing performed on your samples. These results are provided by sample ID and are separated by the analyses performed on each sample.
