Based on the current guidance to minimize the spread of COVID-19, the Department of Environmental Quality has adjusted
operations to protect the health and safety of the staff and public. Many employees are working remotely or are on staggered
shifts. To accommodate these staffing changes, all DEQ office locations are limiting public access to appointments only. Please
check with the appropriate staff before visiting our offices, as we may be able to handle your requests by phone or email. We
appreciate your patience as we continue to serve the public during this challenging time.

Subject: Spill Call ‐ 8/22/2022
Mike,
I received a voice mail around 4:30 yesterday afternoon and wasn’t able to call the number until this morning. The
individual, Jim Sheckels, returned my call to advise:
Release occurred at: intersection of County Line Road & Glynn Mill Farm Drive, Fayetteville
Single vehicle accident occurred on Saturday night, 8/20/22;
Gasoline was released from the car and he can smell it in the yard still today (vehicle was typical midsize
passenger);
2
He is waiting still on the Highway Patrol to provide him with the police report;
He, as well as the general area, all use water supply wells for potable water so that is of concern.
I provided him with Service Provider list and advised he would be wise to use a licensed professional since
petroleum contamination is known and because of the concern with WSWs

I have advised him that either you or Sarah would be making contact with him. When I spoke with him, he had my email
address to send the police report to so perhaps one of you can reach him before week’s end so he has that information
also. Again, I believe he plans to have some abatement quotes to consider his own cleanup and then have his attorney
seek cost recovery from the driver’s insurance. Or, depending on how quickly he can get the police report, he will first
pursue the insurance company. In any event, I told him our standard practice will be to send a NORR to the responsible
party (driver/vehicle owner) and then we can only hope they do the right thing and make contact with their insurance
company.
