EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
301 Kwik Shop is located at 23011 Highway 301 North in Parkton, Robeson County, North Carolina. The
property operates as a petroleum retail facility and convenience store. Currently, there is one 10,000-
gallon gasoline UST and two 8,000-gallon gasoline USTs active at the site. The site is not located within a
wellhead protection area. No potable water supply wells were located within a 1,000-foot radius of the
site. No water supply wells were located within a 250-foot radius of the site. Public water is available to
the site and surrounding area. No surface water bodies were identified within 500-feet of the site.
On January 12, 2023, four Type II monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-4) were gauged, purged and/or
sampled. Concentrations of benzene exceeding the MAC were reported in the ground water samples
collected from MW-1 and MW-3. Free Product was observed in MW-4 and could not be sampled.
Based on the information collected during the site visit, the risk classification of the site should be re-
classified to intermediate risk due to the presence of free product in MW-4, and no potable water
supply wells located within a 1,000-foot radius of the site. Additional monitoring wells should be
installed down gradient of MW-4 to establish the extent of contamination. Based on the ASC activities
completed in May of 2022, the free product/GCLs appear to be localized in the area of MW-4. An AFVR
event should be conducted on MW-4 to reduce the free phase product observed in that monitoring well.

1 SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION
GRI presents the results of the January 2023 ground water sampling event at the 301 Kwik Shop site,
located at 23011 Highway 301 North in Parkton, Robeson County, North Carolina (Figure 1). These
activities were conducted in accordance with GRI Proposal No. 22-871, which was submitted to NCDEQ
on December 5, 2022, and was approved as Task Authorization No. 47840-007 on January 3, 2023. State
correspondence has been included as Appendix A.
The site is currently operated by Naji M Ahmed and Others as a petroleum retail facility and convenience
store. On April 2, 2007, a release was discovered at the site and was assigned incident number 29578.
The incident was closed with an NFA on April 26, 2010. UST Incident Number 47840 was issued when
contamination was observed in the soil sample collected during the June 2021 Site Check activities.
Currently, one 10,000-gallon gasoline UST and two 8,000-gallon gasoline USTs are active at the site. UST
owner/operator information and UST system information are included as Tables 1 and 2, respectively.
The Registered Tank Report is shown below:
The site and surrounding area are a mixture of multi-family residential, single family residential, and
commercial properties. The site contains one building (the store) and is primarily covered with concrete,
asphalt and grass. The overall topography at the site is relatively flat. Four Type II monitoring wells (MW-
1 through MW-4) were previously installed at the site during past assessment activities.
On September 9, 2021, GRI personnel conducted a receptor survey at the site. No potable water supply
wells were located within a 1,000-foot radius of the site. Water supply well owner information is
presented in Table 3. No water supply wells were located within a 250-foot radius of the site. Public
water is available to the site and surrounding area. No surface water bodies were identified within 500-
feet of the site. Adjacent property owner information is presented in Table 4. A Site Vicinity Map showing

the locations of water supply wells and property boundaries has been included as Figure 2. A Site Map
showing the locations of the monitoring wells and the structures on-site has been included as Figure 3.
On May 19, 2022, six temporary monitoring wells (TMW-1 through TMW-6) and five soil borings (SB-1
through SB-5) were installed at the site as part of ASC activities. Soil and ground water samples were
collected to determine the extent of the contaminate plume. All reported concentrations for soil samples
collected were less than the RALs. The concentration of benzene reported in the ground water sample
collected from MW-4 exceeded the GCLs. Free product was not observed.
2 PRESENTATION OF CURRENT SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION/ COMPARISON TO HISTORICAL
ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
On January 12, 2022, four Type II monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-4) were gauged, purged and/or
sampled in accordance with NCDEQ guidelines. Depths to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells
ranged from 15.69 to 16.53 feet below the tops of well casings. Ground water elevations at the site, based
on an assumed datum of 100.00 feet, ranged from 83.73 to 84.27 feet. Based on this information, the
ground water flow direction was generally toward the southeast with a horizontal hydraulic gradient of
approximately 0.02 feet per foot. A water table surface map has been included as Figure 4. Well
construction and gauging information for the Type II monitoring well is presented in Table 5. A summary
of the current ground water gauging data is shown below:

3 FREE PRODUCT REMOVAL
During the January 2023 sampling event, free product was observed in MW-4 for the first time since it’s
installation on February 15, 2022. Prior to this sampling event MW-4 had been sampled twice with no free
product.
4 CONCLUSIONS
On January 12, 2023, four Type II monitoring wells were gauged, purged and/or sampled. Ground
water flow direction is to the southeast with an approximate hydraulic gradient of 0.02 feet per
foot.
Concentrations of benzene exceeded the MAC in Monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-3.
Free Product was observed in MW-4
Based on the information collected during the site visit, the risk classification of the site should be
re-classified to intermediate risk due to the presence of free product in MW-4, and no potable
water supply wells located within a 1,000-foot radius of the site. Additional monitoring wells
should be installed down gradient of MW-4 to establish the extent of contamination. Based on
the ASC activities completed in May of 2022, the free product/GCLs appear to be localized in the
area of MW-4. An AFVR event should be conducted on MW-4 to remove the free phase product
observed in that monitoring well.

Ken,
I have talked with the water department and they told me that to properly verify if theses meters are in use they need
meter numbers.
The monitoring wells were last sampled in May, so if we are on a simi-annual sampling time line, they are past due.
With that being said. I propose that we sample the 5 on-site monitoring wells, and while we are there, get meter
numbers and talk the folks we need to talk to.
That sound good to you?

Water use questionnaires were not included in the LSA so if nothing other than walk around I am not certain how much
confidence can be put on water use at these sites below with issues. Other properties along Tobermory Road had intact
meter boxes with lids so I would imagine county water use.
888 Tobermory Rd. – Unoccupied parcel with appearances of a former mobile home having been there in the
past. Water meter is present. Simply looking from the right of way, I could not visibly see a water supply well as was
previously reported.
923 Parkton Tobermory Rd. – Residential property with meter box. Lid was not present and was filled with dirt and
grass. No electronic reader. Needs verification of use.
Owner: Patricia Gail Gilmore
923 W. Tobermory Road
Parkton, NC 28371
1022 Parkton Tobermory Rd. – Mobile home. Has water meter with lid off and appears that it has an electronic reader
attached. Meter may be functional, but service needs verification.
Owner: Don & Sara Taylor
659 Carolina Church Rd.
St. Pauls, NC 28384
998 Parkton Tobermory Rd. – Residential property where I could not locate a water meter. Noted, there is a county fire
hydrant in the ROW of their front yard.
Owner: Wilbert Hunt
998 W. Parkton Tobermory Road
Parkton, NC 28371-9672
984 Parkton Tobermory Rd. – large, essentially vacant lot except for what is a camper down a driveway. The area
surrounding the camper appears as if someone is living in it. A guy working on a house across the road told me that he
has seen folks back there and it was his impression someone was living in the camper also. I could not find any evidence
of a water meter so primary potable use is unknown. I am not certain what county zoning allows for dwelling in a
camper on private land. I imagine nothing since I know of other areas in Robeson County where someone is living in a
camper on a parcel
