The soil assessment activities were conducted in January of 2023 and included the installation of 16 soil borings (SB-1 through SB-16) and the collection of soil samples from each soil boring for laboratory analysis. Soil boring locations are presented on Figure 1. CES contracted Bridger Drilling to install the 16 soil borings at the subject property. Borings were advanced to between 14-feet to 20-feet below ground surface (bgs). Soil borings were installed using direct push techniques to collect soil samples representative of subsurface conditions. Contact downhole drilling equipment (hollow-stem augers, drill rods) was decontaminated prior to drilling using a steam cleaner with a design discharge of 180oF. Sampling equipment was decontaminated between each sample interval using a phosphate-free detergent solution and water rinse. Disposable nitrile gloves were properly used during all phases of sample collection. The soil samples were collected for visual inspection, lithologic characterization, and headspace screening for the presence of volatile organic compound (VOC) vapors typically associated with petroleum fuels. Portions of each soil sample recovered were retained in plastic Zip-LocTM bags for headspace analysis. Sample temperature was allowed to equilibrate for a period of approximately 15 minutes at a minimum temperature of 68oF prior to screening. Headspace screening was performed using a RaeSystems photoionization detector (PID) calibrated to 100 parts per million by Volume (ppmV) isobutylene standard. This instrument detects VOC vapors within a range of 0.1 ppmV to 5,000 ppmV. Headspace analysis involved the insertion of the sample probe portion of the PID into the equilibrated sample bag. The maximum reading obtained upon insertion of the probe was recorded for each sample. GPM 3010 CLARKTON, NORTH CAROLINA INCIDENT #29002 Two (2) soil samples from each soil boring were retained for laboratory analysis; one (1) soil sample from the interval with the highest PID reading from the unsaturated zone, and one (1) soil sample from the interval with the highest PID reading from the saturated zone. Headspace readings are included on the boring logs which are included as attachments to this report, along with a soil boring locations map. Samples to be retained for laboratory analysis were placed into laboratory-supplied containers pre-filled with appropriate preservatives and labeled with indelible ink. Following collection, samples were immediately placed on ice in laboratory-supplied coolers pending transportation to Rapid Environmental Diagnostics Laboratories, LLC (RED LAB) located in Wilmington, NC for chemical analysis. The samples were analyzed by ultraviolet fluorescence. Upon review of the laboratory analytical report, 12 of the 32 samples contained exceedances to the NCDEQ Action Levels. The NCDEQ Action Level for gasoline range organics (GRO) of 50 mg/kg was exceeded at; SB-2W (1115 mg/kg), SB-3D (218.1 mg/kg), SB-4D (1076 mg/kg), SB-4W (127.5 mg/kg), SB-5D (229.7 mg/kg), SB-6D (336.7 mg/kg), SB-7W (113.2 mg/kg), SB-8D (72.8 mg/kg), SB-9D (1563 mg/kg), SB-9W (73 mg/kg), SB-10D (901.7 mg/kg), and SB-10W (2813 mg/kg). The NCDEQ Action Level for diesel range organics (DRO) of 100 mg/kg was exceeded at; SB-2W (1129 mg/kg), SB-3D (213.3 mg/kg), SB-4D (1485 mg/kg), SB-4W (139.6 mg/kg), SB-6D (333.9 mg/kg), SB-7W (132.1 mg/kg), SB-8D (112 mg/kg), SB-9D (1644 mg/kg), SB-10D (1285 mg/kg), and SB-10W (3448 mg/kg). Soil analytical results are presented in Table 1 and on Figure 2. Results of hydrocarbon fingerprint matching identified degraded kerosene in 11 samples; SB-2 W, SB-4 D, SB-4 W, SB-7 W, SB-8 D, SB-8W, SB-9 D, SB-9 W, SB-10 D, and SB-10W. Degraded gasoline was identified in the samples from SB-15 D and SB-16 D, and undegraded gasoline was identified in the sample from SB-7 D. Road tar was identified at SB-1 D, degraded fuel was identified at SB-5 W, and residual hydrocarbon was identified at SB-1 W and SB-14 W. Results from the remaining samples were either ‘no match found’ or petroleum hydrocarbons were not detected. A site map, a table summarizing the analytical results, the laboratory analytical reports and chain of custody documentation, and soil boring logs are included as attachments to this report.
