The fuel discharged to a stormwater drain system that is approximately 1,000 feet in length. The stormwater outfall is located south of the gas station (35.558209, -82.636712) and discharges to a tributary to Hominy Creek known as Ragsdale Creek. I inspected approximately ½ mile of Ragsdale Creek. There was free product below the stormwater outfall and pockets of free product approximately 800 feet downstream of the outfall. There was less odor and petroleum sheen further downstream. As of yesterday morning, I’m confident that most of the impact was confined to that initial 800 feet downstream of the outfall. Mountain Environmental deployed three sets of absorbent booms and numerous pads along the creek before noon yesterday. They also tried to jet and vacuum the first 100 feet of stormwater drain between the gas station and the neighboring Duncan Donuts but there was a lot coarse debris in the drain that was hampering their efforts. They were able to clear approximately 50 feet of the drain and did recover some fuel. We had pretty steady rain throughout the night so it likely flushed the stormwater drain. I will be meeting Mountain Environmental this morning to remove the spent booms/pads and redeploy fresh booms. I will provide another update later this afternoon. My goal is to inspect the creek again on Monday morning. You can reach me in the field at (984) 232-1140. Good afternoon gentlemen, I just wanted to start this email chain with everyone to keep track of what is happening with the spill at out site #1418 in Asheville. If there’s anyone else that needs to be added to this, please let me know. Summary of events: There was a fuel spill last night at site 1418 around 9:30pm. We were not notified of it until this morning. Approximately 400 gallons were discharged onto the ground when an impaired driver ran through the cones and hit the fueling nozzle from the tank truck delivering fuel. The fire department was called and they washed down the site into the storm drain. The fire department re-opened the site shortly after midnight. We have video from the store showing the incident, but there is no clear view of the license plate to identify the driver, as he drove off. Mountain Environmental is onsite with a vacuum truck and booms. The storm drain discharges into the Ragesdale Creek, which is a tributary to the Hominy Creek. Fuel was noted to have made it to the Ragesdale creek. The discharge point is being blocked off and the line is being vacuumed out. Mountain Environmental is also walking the creek with Brett I believe. Kevin J.
