Groundwater Monitoring Report Sam's Stop and Shop 7000 Friendship Church Road McLeansville, North Carolina S&ME Project No. 4358-15-018 November 1, 2022 2 2.2 Groundwater Contaminant Concentrations The maximum concentrations of dissolved petroleum constituents detected greater than the applicable site cleanup goals during this sampling event are summarized in the table below, along with the gross contamination levels (GCLs) and the applicable site cleanup goals: 15A NCAC 2L .0202 groundwater quality standards (2L Standard). Exceedances of the cleanup goals are indicated in wells MW-1 and MW-2. No GCL exceedances were reported. Table 2-1 Groundwater Analytical Results Summary Contaminant GCL (µg/L) 2L Standard (µg/L) Well ID Concentration (µg/L) Benzene 5,000 1 MW-1 529 tert-Amyl Alcohol 40,000 40 MW-1 458 Tert-Butyl Alcohol 10,000 10 MW-2 91.8 µg/L: micrograms per liter 2.3 Current and Historical Extent of Groundwater Contamination Based on the groundwater monitoring event conducted on September 28, 2022, the extent of petroleum impacts in the site groundwater, as defined by portions of the site with dissolved benzene in the shallow aquifer at concentrations greater than the 2L Standards, appears to be limited to the area near monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2. 2.4 Water Supply Well Contaminant Concentrations On September 28, 2022, S&ME personnel mobilized to the site to sample selected, active potable water supply wells WSW-11, WSW-39, WSW-20, and WSW-42. Water supply well WSW-30 and WSW-01 were sampled on October 3, 2022. Property information is presented in Table 4. The water supply wells were allowed to purge for approximately 15 minutes prior to sampling. The groundwater samples were placed in laboratory-supplied containers, placed in a cooler on ice, and shipped under standard chain-of-custody procedure to Pace Analytical for analysis by EPA Method 6200B. The laboratory did not report detections of target compounds in the samples collected from the water supply wells. Letters were previously mailed to property owners with the laboratory results of the recent water supply well sampling event. 2.5 Remedial Actions In accordance with the approved CAP report, S&ME installed five (5) air sparge wells (SPG-1 through SPG-5) and four (4) soil vapor extraction (SVE) wells (SVE-1 through SVE-4) at the subject site. The air sparge and SVE systems were energized on March 29, 2011. S&ME turned off the remediation systems on June 30, 2016, to begin natural attenuation monitoring. Groundwater Monitoring Report Sam's Stop and Shop 7000 Friendship Church Road McLeansville, North Carolina S&ME Project No. 4358-15-018 November 1, 2022 3 On November 27, 2019, S&ME gravity fed 5 gallons of Enviro-Bac solution, provided by subcontractor Progress Environmental, into monitoring well MW-1. The Enviro-Bac application was performed as an attempt to further reduce dissolved petroleum compounds at the site. The September 28, 2022 sampling event is the fifth monitoring event since the Enviro-Bac application. 2.6 Potential Receptors S&ME updated water supply well information for properties within 500 feet of the Sam’s Stop and Shop property in August 2016 (Figure 5). It is not known whether the USTs removed in 1998 or the USTs removed in 2004 contributed to the release. 3.5 Site Characteristics  Land Use of Site: The site is currently utilized as a convenience store with retail petroleum sales.  Land Use of Surrounding Area: The land use of the surrounding area is predominantly residential.  Topography: The site is approximately 790 feet above the Nation Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929. Based upon the topographic map reviewed, the area of the subject property slopes predominantly to the south. A topographic map of the subject property and surrounding areas is included in Figure 1.  Vegetation/Surface Cover: A landscaped grass areas exist on the western and eastern portion of the site and the central portion is covered by asphalt and concrete in addition to the site structures.  Surface Water: The nearest surface water bodies are five ponds located approximately 1,000 feet to 1,500 feet from the release location. Based on the USGS Topographic Map (Browns Summit), ponds located in apparent upgradient positions west, and north of the source area drain to the north by unnamed tributaries of Reedy Creek. Two ponds located southeast and southwest of the source area drain to the south by unnamed tributaries of Buffalo Creek.  Wells: Twenty-five (25) active water supply wells are located within 1500 feet of the subject site.  Buildings: According to the Guilford County GIS website, the site contains one approximately 1,700 square foot structure.  Depth to and Nature of Bedrock: The subject site is located in the Carolina Slate Belt hydrogeologic province of the Piedmont Physiographic Province of North Carolina. The area is underlain by metamorphic rock identified on the 1985 Geologic Map, North Carolina, as felsic metavolcanic rock. This formation is described as dacitic to rhyolitic flows and tuffs, interbedded with mafic and intermediate metavolcanic rock, meta-argillite and metamudstone. Groundwater Monitoring Report Sam's Stop and Shop 7000 Friendship Church Road McLeansville, North Carolina S&ME Project No. 4358-15-018 November 1, 2022 5 3.6 Regional and Site Geology and Hydrogeology 3.6.1 Soil and Bedrock The subject site is located in the Carolina Slate Belt hydrogeologic province of the Piedmont Physiographic Province of North Carolina. Soils in this region are typically composed of residual weathering products of the underlying parent rocks. A transitional zone exists between the unweathered bedrock and the overlying soil. This regolith is primarily saprolite, a clay-rich residuum derived from the in-situ weathering of the underlying bedrock. The thickness of a saprolite unit can often vary considerably within a given locale. 3.6.2 Hydrogeology The depth to groundwater was measured at each monitoring well prior to sampling activities. Based on the depth to groundwater data collected on September 28, 2022, and relative well top of casing elevations, the direction of groundwater flow was calculated to be toward the northwest. Historical depth to groundwater data for shallow monitor well MW-1 and vertical extent monitor well DW-1 (see Table 1) suggest a downward groundwater gradient at the site. 3.7 Owners and Occupants of Adjoining/Nearby Properties and Land Use The land use of the surrounding area is predominantly residential. 3.8 Receptor and Potential Receptor Information Locations of the identified water supply wells are shown on Figure 5. 4.0 Summary of Assessment Activities 4.1 Monitor Well Sampling On September 28, 2022, S&ME completed a groundwater sampling event at the subject site (see Figure 1). Monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, and DW-1 were sampled. Figure 2 shows the location of the site’s monitoring wells. Table 1 includes monitoring well construction information. S&ME purged each monitoring well of approximately three times the initial well volume or to dryness with a disposable PVC bailer or submersible pump prior to collecting a groundwater sample. Each groundwater sample was handled with a new pair of latex gloves and was placed directly into the laboratory provided sampling containers. The samples were submitted to Pace Analytical in Huntersville, North Carolina, for laboratory analysis. Groundwater Monitoring Report Sam's Stop and Shop 7000 Friendship Church Road McLeansville, North Carolina S&ME Project No. 4358-15-018 November 1, 2022 6 The collected groundwater samples were analyzed for volatile organics by EPA Method 6200B, plus oxygenates. Selected analytical data from the most recent sampling event is shown in Table 2. Historical groundwater concentrations are shown in Table 3. The laboratory analytical report for the reporting period is included in Appendix III. 5.0 Discussion of Laboratory Analyses Benzene and TAA were reported in samples collected from both MW-1 and MW-2 at concentrations greater than the North Carolina groundwater quality standard (2L Standard) (see Table 2). TBA was reported in the sample collected from MW-2 at a concentration greater than the 2L Standard. No other target analytes were reported in the collected groundwater samples at concentrations greater than the 2L standard. A constituent concentration map (Figure 3) was constructed, based on the September 28, 2022, data. When compared to the April 2022 sampling data, the reported benzene concentration in MW-1 increased while the reported benzene concentration in MW-2 decreased. Relative groundwater elevations in monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2 were lower than during the April 2022 sampling event. Benzene concentrations in MW-1 have remained relatively constant since the May 2020 sampling event. Benzene concentrations in MW-2 have consistently decreased since the May 2021 sampling event. The October 19, 2021, sampling event was the first sampling event at the subject location that included analysis of oxygenates. During the April 15, 2022 and September 28, 2022 sampling events, concentrations of TAA remained relatively constant in MW-1 and MW-2. TBA was not reported in MW-1 during the September 28, 2022 sampling event. No target compounds have historically been reported in MW-3. No target compounds have been reported in MW-4 since December of 2006. No target compounds have been reported in vertical extent monitor well DW-1 at concentrations greater than the 2L Standard since the February 2015 sampling event. 6.0 Conclusions Analytical results for groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells during the September 28, 2022, sampling event indicates dissolved petroleum compounds remain in the site groundwater at concentrations greater than the cleanup goal. Based on the September 2022 groundwater data, we recommend the following.  Consider re-energizing the air sparge system at the site using the air sparge wells near monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2 to attempt to reduce dissolved petroleum concentrations in monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2. Groundwater Monitoring Report Sam's Stop and Shop 7000 Friendship Church Road McLeansville, North Carolina S&ME Project No. 4358-15-018 November 1, 2022 7  Sample monitoring wells and water supply wells at the site in April of 2023 to compare dissolved petroleum compound concentrations, as well as oxygenates, in the site groundwater with previous data. If reported benzene concentrations in monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2 increase, from the September 28, 2022, concentrations, then additional assessment may be appropriate.
