(Progress) is pleased to submit this Free Product Recovery Report for the Quality Mart #18 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. The objective of the assessment was to install a monitoring well to determine the presence of free product and/or collect and test a groundwater sample from a monitoring well installed in the vicinity of a gasoline underground storage tank (UST) where a recent release was previously documented. Utilizing a truck-mounted drill rig, 3D Environmental Investigations, LLC installed a Type II monitoring well (MW-20) immediately adjacent to the UST pit on May 7, 2020. Progress supervised the installation of the monitoring well. Evidence of the water table was observed in the soil samples and drill cuttings at an approximate depth of 30 feet below land surface (bls). 3D Environmental Investigations, LLC installed a two-inch temporary monitoring well to an approximate depth of 40 feet bls with 15 feet of 0.01 slotted Schedule 40 PVC screen using the solid stem auger drilling method. Progress allowed the monitoring well adequate time to equilibrate prior to purging and sampling. Evidence of free product was not documented at the time of sampling. A groundwater sample was collected using a disposable bailer and new length of cord and transferred to laboratory containers. The groundwater samples were decanted into laboratory-supplied bottles and placed into a cooler packed with ice. The cooler was delivered under chain-of-custody to Research and Analytical Laboratories, Inc. (R&A) in Kernersville, North Carolina for testing for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using Standard Method 6200B, volatile petroleum hydrocarbons (VPH) using Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, for ethylene dibromide (EDB) using EPA Method 504.1, and for lead using the Standard Method. A summary of the groundwater sample analytical results is included in Table B-4. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-1 detected benzene (2,550 ug/L), ethylbenzene (3,070 ug/L), I-propylbenzene (143 ug/L), naphthalene (480 ug/L), n- propylbenzene (305 ug/L), p-isopropyltoluene (27.5 ug/L), toluene (19,000 ug/L), 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (2,170 ug/L), 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (582 ug/L), total xylenes (15,500 ug/L), and ethanol (815,000 ug/L) at concentrations exceeding their respective North Carolina 2L Groundwater Quality Standards (NC2LGWQS). None of the targeted compounds detected in the groundwater sample from monitoring well MW-20 exceeds their respective Gross Contamination Levels (GCLs).
