Market Street Colfax, Guilford County, North Carolina (WSRO) STF Incident #19240 (Colfax Service Station) and #20028 (Colfax Oil Company) Risk/Rank: High H570D/H410D Dear Mr. Younts: The Winston Salem Regional Office (WSRO) referred the referenced sites to the State’s Underground Storage Tank (UST) Trust Fund Branch, State-Lead Cleanup Program. Eleven USTs were operated on the sites. Seven USTs were associated with the former Colfax Service Station, and four USTs plus two 10,000-gallon above-ground storage tanks were associated with the Colfax Oil Company bulk plant. Soil contamination was discovered during tank removal activities in 1999 and 2004, and groundwater contamination has been documented from both releases. The Responsible Party, Hardin Oil Company, Inc, has been dissolved. Due to the presence of groundwater users within 1,500 feet and the confirmation of contamination remaining at the site, the subject property was accepted for inclusion on the list of sites awaiting State-Lead cleanup, and we have initiated our assessment. On June 13, 2022, Withers Ravenel personnel sampled your water supply well on behalf of the NC Department of Environmental Quality. The water sample was analyzed for Volatile Organic Compounds, which include a wide range of man-made compounds including, but not limited to, gasoline components. No targeted compounds were detected in your supply well, and a copy of the lab results are enclosed for your review.
