Photographs of the site are included in Appendix A. Based on information provided to ECS, four 4,000-gallon gasoline USTs were removed from the site in October 1992. During closure activities, Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) was observed flowing into a test pit that was excavated to a depth of approximately 19 feet bgs. Petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in soil samples collected from the UST basin and dispenser areas. The closure was concluded by soil excavation and remediation of approximately 1,029 tons of soil. Between 1993 and 1994, eight monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-8) and two recovery wells (RW-5 and RW-6) were installed at the site. Monitoring well MW-1 is presumed destroyed and recovery well RW-6 is presumed paved over based on a 2008 report. An aggressive fluid vapor recovery (AFVR) event was conducted in 1996 and a mobile multi-phase extraction (MMPE) event was conducted in 2001. LNAPL was not observed following the MMPE event until 2008 when 0.05 feet of LNAPL was measured in monitoring well MW-2. Groundwater samples were collected from various monitoring wells on the site in 1993, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2018. The contaminant concentrations in the impacted monitoring wells have generally decreased since the 1993 sampling event. Sixteen water- supply wells have been identified within 1,000 feet of the site. Methyl-tert-butyl-ether (MTBE) has been detected in one water supply well (WSW-5) since 2009; however, the concentrations have been below the North Carolina 2L Groundwater Quality Standard (NC2LGWQS. Municipal water is not available to the site or surrounding properties. The nearest surface water body is a stream located approximately 230 feet east of the source area. The estimated quantity of the release is unknown. The site is currently occupied by Swift Automotive Paint and Body Shop Supplies. 2.0 GROUNDWATER ASSESSMENT 2.1 Groundwater Measurement On December 12, 2019, ECS measured the static water level (SWL) in monitoring wells MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, and MW-5 using a decontaminated electronic water level meter. The static water levels and top of casing elevations were used to calculate groundwater flow direction. The static water level measurements can be found on Table 1. 2.2 Monitoring Well Sampling Following the collection of the groundwater measurements, ECS personnel collected groundwater samples from monitoring wells MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, and MW-5. The locations of the wells are shown on Figure 3. Prior to sampling, the monitoring wells were purged using a new disposable polyethylene bailer and new length of nylon cord. The monitoring wells were purged by evacuating a minimum of three well volumes using the bailer and cord. After purging was completed, the groundwater sample was poured from the bailer into laboratory prepared containers. Each container was labeled and placed in a cooler containing ice to maintain the samples at approximately four degrees Celsius. The sample containers were then submitted to Pace Analytical Services, LLC (Pace), a North Carolina certified laboratory, in Huntersville, Groundwater Monitoring Report Jerry’s Place 983 US Highway 21 State Road, Surry County, North Carolina NCDEQ Incident No.: 9547 ECS Project 49:6166-A January 7, 2020 North Carolina to be analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using Standard Method 6200B. A Chain of Custody Record was maintained and is included in Appendix B. A copy of the groundwater sampling notes are included in Appendix C. 2.3 Water Supply Well Sampling On December 12, 2019, ECS collected a sample from water-supply well WSW-5. The location of the well is shown on Figure 3. Prior to sampling, the water supply well and plumbing were purged by allowing the water to run for approximately 15 minutes. After purging was completed, the sampler wearing a new pair of disposable nitrile gloves, poured the water sample into laboratory prepared containers. Each container was labeled and placed in a cooler containing ice to maintain the samples at approximately four degrees Celsius. The sample containers were then submitted to Pace to be analyzed for VOCs using Standard Method 6200B. 3.0 RESULTS 3.1 Groundwater Flow Direction Based on the groundwater measurement collected at the site on December 12, 2019, the groundwater at the site is generally to the southeast as depicted on Figure 4. 3.2 Monitoring Well Sampling Results Review of the laboratory analytical report of groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-2 and MW-3 indicated multiple targeted compounds greater than the NC2LGWQS; however, the concentrations were not greater than the Gross Contaminant Levels (GCLs). Compounds were not detected in the samples collected from monitoring wells MW-4 and MW-5 at concentrations greater than the laboratory method reporting limits. A summary of the current and historical groundwater analytical results is included in Table 2. The current analytical results are depicted on Figure 5. A copy of the laboratory analytical report are included in Appendix B. 3.3 Water Supply Well Sampling Results Review of the laboratory analytical report of the sample collected from water supply well WSW-5 did not indicate any compounds at concentrations greater than the laboratory method reporting limits. A summary of the current and historical water supply well analytical results are presented in Table 3. 4.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Based on the results of this groundwater sampling event, ECS concludes that benzene concentrations in the samples collected from wells MW-2/RW-2 and MW-3/RW-3 in December 2019 decreased by 55 and 69 percent, respectively as compared to the samples collected in February 2018. However, total volatile organic compound concentrations in the samples collected from these wells in December 2019 increased by 112 and 34 percent, respectively, as compared to the samples collected in February 2018. Compound concentrations in the samples collected Groundwater Monitoring Report Jerry’s Place 983 US Highway 21 State Road, Surry County, North Carolina NCDEQ Incident No.: 9547 ECS Project 49:6166-A January 7, 2020 from wells MW-4/RW-4 and MW-5 in December 2019 have decreased to below laboratory method detection limits. Based on the direction of groundwater flow at the site, the groundwater plume has been defined. ECS recommends installing remedial devices in wells MW-2/RW-2 and MW-3/RW-3 and conducting sampling of the wells approximately six months following remedial device installation. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values.
