(Terracon) is pleased to submit this Letter Report for the above referenced property. This report has been prepared in general accordance with North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR), UST Section Guidelines for Assessment and Corrective Action for UST Releases, dated July 15, 2008, revised December 2013 and Task Authorization No. 02, approved on November 19, 2014. Terracon personnel mobilized to the site on January 12, 2015 to conduct a 96-hour Mobile Multi- Phase Extraction (MMPE) event at monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-5 which contained the highest levels of petroleum constituents or free product based on recent and historic groundwater sampling events conducted on the site. The locations of the monitoring wells are depicted on Figure 1, Terracon was unable to locate well MW-5 and subsequently MMPE activities were only conducted utilizing well MW-1. Depth to water was 24.78 feet below ground surface prior to commencement of MMPE activities with approximately 1.94 feet of free product. The MMPE event was conducted by ZAVA Industrial Inc. from January 12, 2015 to January 16, 2015. According to ZAVA’s field report dated January 16, 2015, a total of 1,784 gallons of water was recovered from the well and mass balance calculations indicated total VOC emissions removed from the well equated to 24.52 gallons. Zava’s field report for the MMPE event is included as Attachment A. Photographs of the MMPE event are provided in Appendix B. Johnson’s Grocery Store Dobson, North Carolina Project Number 71149156 Incident No. 30594 March 23, 2015 In addition to the MMPE event, Terracon oversaw the advancement of two soil borings (GP-6 and GP-7) by Probe Technology, Inc. to an approximate depth of 30 feet below ground surface (bgs) utilizing a Geoprobe® drill rig equipped with a hollow stem rotary auger. The down-hole drilling equipment was decontaminated prior to advancing each boring. Soils collected from the borings were screened for organic vapors using a photoionization detector (PID). Soil Samples GP-6(20-25) and GP-7(20-25) were submitted to Pace Analytical in Huntersville, a North Carolina-approved laboratory for analysis of risk-based parameters including EPA Methods 8260 and 8270, MADEP EPH and MADEP VPH. The borings were subsequently converted to Type II groundwater monitoring wells MW-6 and MW-7. The proposed locations of wells MW-6 and MW-7 were inaccessible and were adjusted in the field due to the presence of an approximately 25 foot elevation change sloping towards an intermittent drainage feature along the northern property boundary. The locations of monitoring wells MW-6 and MW-7 are depicted on Figure 1. According to the laboratory analytical report, benzene was detected in samples GP-7(20-25) at 9.6 micrograms per kilogram (µg/kg) in excess of the Soil-to-Water Maximum Soil Contaminant Concentration (MSCC) of 5.6 µg/kg. Additional analytes were detected at concentrations below their respective Soil-to-Water MSCCs. A copy of laboratory analytical report is included in Appendix C. Terracon recommends the on-site groundwater monitoring wells be sampled in April 2015 to evaluate the effectiveness of the MMPE event.
