UST Incident Number: 30594
Terracon Project No. 71149156A
Dear Mr. Berger:
Terracon Consultants, Inc. (Terracon) is pleased to submit this Free Product Recovery Report for
the above referenced property. This report has been prepared in general accordance with North
Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), UST Section Guidelines for Assessment
and Corrective Action for UST Releases, dated July 15, 2008, revised December 2013 and Task
Authorization No. 05, approved on December 23, 2019.
Terracon personnel and Advanced Environmental Services (AES) mobilized to the site on January
13, 2020 to conduct a 96-hour Mobile Multi-Phase Extraction (MMPE) event at monitoring well MW-
1 (Figure 1). Prior to commencement of MMPE activities, Terracon measured 0.12 feet of free
product in monitoring well MW-1. The MMPE event was conducted by AES from January 13, 2020
to January 17, 2020. According to the AES field report dated February 6, 2020, a total of 2,357
gallons of a product/water mixture was recovered from the well and mass balance calculations
indicated total VOC emissions removed from the well equated to 3.77 gallons. After the MMPE
event, free product was not identified in the on-site wells. A copy of the AES field report is provided
in Appendix A. Terracon has also provided a copy of our field notes in Appendix B and
photographs in Appendix C.
Terracon recommends monitoring the effectiveness of the MMPE event and conducting O-sox
maintenance in well MW-2 during the semi-annual sampling event that will be conducted in March
2020.

Event Dates: January 13 - 17, 2020
Advanced Job # 01 - 2002
Advanced Personnel: Scott Crook and Lee Heilig
MMPE System: MMPE system rated 24”hg at 140 CFM
4’ discharge stack - 2” diameter
6,000 - gallon tanker
Approximately 140’of 1.5” hose to 1 well
Extraction Well: MW-1
Well Initial FP/WL(ft) Final FP/WL(ft) Stinger depth(ft) Run Time
MW-1 21.94/22.06 24.24 23/24/25 96.0 hours
Description of Event:
The MMPE event ran from 11:30 January 13, through 11:30 January 17, 2020. The MMPE
system was active for 96.0 hours. During the event vacuum at the recovery pump maintained
23.0 inches of mercury. Airflow rates maintained 2,500 feet per minute. System temperature
ranged from 114.0 – 142.0 degrees (F) and humidity ranged from 58.0 to 99.0 percent. Field
gauged volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) decreased from 4,200 parts per-million (PPM) to
1,900 (PPM) throughout the event.
Groundwater / Product Mix Recovered:
During the event, a total of 2,357 gallons of product/water mix were removed from the site and
properly disposed at a certified North Carolina disposal facility. Total fluids recovered, was
measured based on stick readings conducted during and following the event. Based on 96.0 hours
of operation and a total of 2,357 gallons recovered, the average groundwater recovery rate was
calculated to be approximately 24.55 gallons per hour.
Events Results:
Based on mass-removal calculations 23.18 pounds or 3.77 gallons of VOC’s were removed as
vapor. Using Dwyer Magnehelic gauges, vacuum influence (inches of water) was measured at
monitoring points MW-2 and MW-8. No vacuum influence was observed at either monitoring
point. Draw-down was observed in MW-2 and MW-8 at 0.19 and 0.09 feet respectively.
Following the event, no free product was identified in any well.
