1.0 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Former Bazemore Grocery site is approximately 1.1 acres in size and is located at 730/732
Mt. Olive Road, in Republican, Bertie County, North Carolina (Figure 1). According to the Bertie
County Online GIS Database, the Parcel Identification Number (PIN) is 5875342404 (Figure 2).
The property is currently developed with an abandoned residential building. The site previously
operated two 2,000-gallon USTs, one 1,500-gallon UST, and one septic tank.
2.0 FIELD ACTIVITIES
AFVR Activities
On November 8, 2018, ECS contracted with Zebra Environmental & Industrial Services (Zebra)
to conduct an AFVR event at the site using monitoring well MW-20 as an extraction point. Prior
to the event, ECS measured free product in monitoring well MW-20 measuring 4.68 feet using a
Solinist oil-surface interface probe. Zebra connected the AFVR recovery pump and vacuum
truck to monitoring well MW-20, and ran from 8:45 AM through 4:45 PM (8 hours). A total of
approximately 2,541 gallons of liquid was removed from the monitoring well. ECS personnel
field notes for the AFVR event are included in Appendix A. Site photographs are included in
Appendix B.
Groundwater Sampling & Remedial Activities
On November 8, 2018, ECS collected a field blank and a groundwater sample from monitoring
well MW-20 (Figure 3).
Purging and sampling of monitoring wells were accomplished using a disposable bailer. The
Groundwater Monitoring Well Sampling Data sheets provided in Appendix A. Prior to beginning
groundwater sampling activities; ECS collected the field blank at the site by pouring laboratory
grade deionized water over the water level meter probe and into the appropriate laboratory
prepared sample containers.
After purging the well, the groundwater samples were transferred into sample containers
provided by the laboratory. The sample containers were labeled with ECS project number,
sample identification, sample date and time, and requested analytical analysis. The containers
were placed into protective packaging material and placed into a cooler with ice to maintain the
samples at approximately 4˚ Celsius (C˚). The samples were submitted to Con-Test located in
Massachusetts for chemical analysis for VOCs using Standard Method 6200B. ECS maintained
proper chain-of-custody (COC) procedures throughout the sample collection and transportation
process. Copies of the COC are included in Appendix C.

3.0 LABORATORY ANALYTICAL RESULTS
Free-Product Characterization
Type(s) of material released
Gasoline
Summary of Free Product Recovery
During the AFVR event on November 8, 2018, ECS recorded field measurements from the
AFVR exhaust to calculate the free product as emissions. ECS collected a measurement of the
exhaust stack diameter and measurements of exhaust velocity, temperature and VOC
concentrations. We used these measurements to calculate a mass-removal rate in pounds per
hour. ECS then converted the mass-removal rate to gallons of free product at a ratio of 0.012
pounds per gallon of free product, in accordance with the Guidelines. This calculation is based
on the molecular weight of gasoline and the weight of carbon in a gasoline molecule. The field
measurements and calculations are summarized in Tables 2 and 3.
Estimated Quantity of Free Product (Liquid) Recovered
The AFVR event recovered 2,541 total gallons of petroleum impacted groundwater.
Estimated Quantity of Free Product Emissions
A total of 0.012 pounds (0.002 gallons) of free product were emitted as vapor during the AFVR
event. Emissions calculations are summarized in Tables 2 and 3.
Permitting
Petroleum emissions associated with AFVR are not required to have air permits in North
Carolina. Therefore, no permits were issued.
Disposition of Recovered Free Product
Recovered groundwater was disposed of by Zebra Environmental & Industrial Services at their
waste disposal facility in Salisbury, North Carolina. The waste disposal manifest is included in
Appendix D.
Groundwater Sampling Laboratory Analytical Results
Laboratory analysis reported benzene, n-butylbenzene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene,
naphthalene, n-propylbenzene, toluene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, and total
xylenes at concentrations above their respective NC2LGWQS but below their respective GCLs in
the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-20.
Acetone was detected in the field blank sample submitted for laboratory analysis. ECS considers
this detection to be associated with possible laboratory contamination and unrepresentative of the
site conditions or sampling procedures.
A summary of the current laboratory analytical results is included in Table 3 and shown on Figure
4. A copy of the COC and laboratory results is included in Appendix C.

4.0 CONCLUSIONS
Based on the results of this Free Product Recovery Report, ECS concludes the following:
Prior to the AFVR event, ECS measured 4.68 feet of free product in monitoring well MW-20.
Subsequent to the AVFR event, ECS did measure any free product in monitoring well MW-
20.
The AFVR event had significantly decreased the amount of free product measured in
monitoring well MW-20.
Laboratory analysis did detect any targeted analytes at concentrations above their
respective GCLs in the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-20.
5.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the results of this Free Product Recovery Report, ECS recommends the following:
Gauging of monitor well MW-20 three to four weeks after the AFVR event to determine if
free product has been removed.
Collection of a groundwater sample from monitor well MW-20 three to four weeks after the
AFVR event to evaluate dissolved petroleum contaminant concentrations.
