2.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
ATC Associates of North Carolina, P.C. (ATC) has completed a Groundwater Monitoring Report
(GMR) documenting the field activities for a groundwater sampling event at the Former Handy
Pantry #10, located at 3601 Chapel Grove School Road, in Gastonia, Gaston County, North
Carolina. The GMR is being performed based on Task Authorization (TA-02) dated December 8,
2022 by the Trust Fund Branch of the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Section, Division of Waste
Management, North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ). The work is being
performed as part of the State Lead Contract #N17004 between NCDEQ and ATC.
A release of petroleum occurred at the site from former UST systems, prior to their removal in
June 2001. This GMR documents impact conditions related to the former UST systems.
As part of TA-02, ATC collected groundwater samples from three monitoring wells (MW-4, MW-6
and TW-1). The groundwater monitoring wells were gauged for depth to water, sampled, and the
water analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The results of the field activities and prior
assessment activities indicate the following:
Municipal water is not available to the area, and two water supply wells are located
within 500 feet of the site: the out-of-service on-site well and a multi-user supply well
(WSW-HA).
Light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) was not detected in the monitoring well
network;
Petroleum constituent concentrations in the groundwater do not exceed the Gross
Contamination Levels (GCLs), but do exceed the 15A NCAC 2L .0202 groundwater
quality standards (2L Standards) for methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in monitoring wells
MW-6 (21.6 micrograms per liter or µg/L) and TW-1 (2,000 µg/L);
The depth to groundwater has ranged from 49.23 (MW-6) to 49.68 (MW-4) feet below
top of casing (ft-toc) in the shallow wells. Based on the groundwater elevations between
the shallow wells and the deep well, there is a slight upward gradient, although for the
October 2021 event, there was a slightly downward gradient. Groundwater flow could
not be evaluated due to the lack of data points, but has been generally to the east during
previous sampling events; and,
The dissolved petroleum constituent plume appears to be decreasing with time.
The results of this monitoring event indicate a continued decrease in contaminants since the
October 2021 AFVR event. MTBE concentrations in MW-6 and TW-1 decreased by
approximately 96% and 14% respectively following the September 2021 AFVR event, and
decreased in both wells by approximately 30% since the October 11, 2011 sampling event. tert-
Amylmethyl alcohol (TAME) also decreased to less than detection limits in MW-6 and TW-1.
Based on this information, ATC offers the following recommendations:
Conduct another AFVR event May 2023 to further enhance VOC reductions and conduct
a post-AFVR groundwater monitoring event in June 2023, including the measurement of
groundwater levels in all nine wells.

3.0 SITE DESCRIPTION
3.1 Site Characterization
The NCDEQ retained ATC to provide environmental consulting services for the Handy Pantry #10
facility, located at 3601 Chapel Grove School Road, in Gastonia, Gaston County, North
Carolina. Figure 1 depicts the site on a topographic map. The site is a vacant, former convenience
store. The site and surrounding area is reportedly not served with municipal water, based on an
August 30, 2019 telephone call to Two Rivers Utilities by ATC. Two water supply wells are reported
to be located within 500 feet of the site. One water supply well is on-site (WSW-1) and one multi-
user water supply well located to the northeast of the site (WSW-HW-Hollywood Acres), across
Chapel Grove School Road. This water supply well is not listed on the NCDEQ’s Source Water
Assessment Program (SWAP) database. Prior attempts to obtain an access agreement to sample
this water supply well have been unsuccessful. Water supply well locations are shown on Figure 2.
Table 1 provides water supply well information. Additional water supply wells are suspected to be
located within 1,000 feet of the site. Figure 3 depicts a site map showing site features and
monitoring well locations.
3.2 Site Background
A release was discovered in June 2001, during the removal of three gasoline UST's and one
kerosene UST. Limited Site Assessment activities were completed in December 2001 which
included the installation of one Type II monitoring well (MW-1) installed near the former UST
basin, and another Type II monitoring well (MW-2) installed near the former kerosene
dispenser. Concentrations of petroleum related contaminants reportedly exceeded their
respective soil-to-groundwater Maximum Soil Contaminant Concentrations (MSCCs) in soil
samples collected from borehole MW-2. Lead was also detected above the 2L Standard in
the groundwater sample from monitoring well MW-1, and C9-C22 aromatics were detected
above the 2L Standard in well MW-2.
Groundwater monitoring, conducted in 2004, showed concentrations of MTBE below 2L
Standards in the groundwater sample collected from well MW-1. Three soil borings were
advanced in the vicinity of well MW-2 and an additional monitoring well (MW-3) was installed in
the vicinity of the product lines near the canopy in February 2005. The soil borings advanced in
the vicinity of well MW-2 exhibited concentrations of several targeted compounds in excess of
their soil-to-groundwater MSCCs. Toluene and MTBE were detected in the soil sample
collected from the borehole for well MW-3 at concentrations below the soil-to-groundwater
MSCCs. Groundwater samples were collected from the three monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2
and MW-3) and from the onsite water supply well (WSW-1). Laboratory analysis of the samples
indicated MTBE and C5-C8 aliphatics at concentrations above 2L Standards in the sample
from well MW-3.
An additional Type II monitoring well (MW-4) was installed and sampled in January 2006,
detecting MTBE and isopropyl ether (IPE) at concentrations below 2L Standards. In October
2007, water supply well samples were collected from the onsite supply well (WSW-1) and two
offsite supply wells (Hickory Creek No. 1 and No. 2). Analytical results of water supply well
WSW-1 indicated MTBE above the 2L Standard. Targeted compounds were not identified in the
Hickory No. 1 and No. 2 samples.
Progress Environmental, Inc. (Progress), completed a Pre-CAP Monitoring Report, dated
August 26, 2011. Monitoring wells MW-1 through MW-4 and the onsite water supply well (WSW-

1) were sampled. The Hickory Creek No. 1 and No. 2 supply wells were not accessible.
Analytical results indicated MTBE was detected in the samples collected from monitoring wells
MW-3, MW-4, and water supply well WSW-1 at concentrations above the 2L Standard but
below GCL. MTBE was also detected at a concentration below the 2L Standard in well MW-1.
On September 27, 2011, Progress supervised the installation of three additional monitoring
wells (MW-5, MW-6 and MW-7) to delineate the southern extent of the impact plume.
Groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells MW-1 through MW-7, onsite
water supply well WSW-1, and offsite supply well WSW-HW (Hollywood Acres). IPE was
detected at concentrations above the 2L Standard in monitoring well MW-6. Additionally, tert-
Amyl methyl ether (TAME) was detected above t h e 2L Standard in the samples collected
from monitoring wells MW-3 and MW-6. MTBE was detected at concentrations above the
2L Standard in the samples collected from monitoring wells MW-3, MW-4, MW-6 and MW-
7. The MTBE concentration in well MW-6 exceeded the GCL. Water supply well analytical
results indicated the presence of IPE, TAME and MTBE in water supply well WSW-1, with
MTBE above the 2L Standard but below the GCL. Targeted compounds were not identified
in the Hollywood Acres WSW sample.
Crawford Environmental performed a groundwater monitoring event in April 2013. MTBE was
detected in well MW-6 in exceedance of the GCL. MTBE was also detected above the 2L
Standard in samples from monitoring wells MW-3 and MW-4, and water supply well WSW-1.
In 2014, ATC performed a groundwater sampling event from nearby water supply wells. Water
supply wells WSW-1 and WSW-HW contained MTBE above the 2L Standard. ATC also
sampled water supply wells which are located more than 1,000 feet from the site. Results for
samples collected from water supply wells WSW-HC (Hickory Creek), WSW-SC (Starland
Community); and WSW-Chapel Acres 01 indicated no detectable petroleum constituents;
however, non-petroleum contaminants (chloroform and chloromethane) were identified in
several WSWs at concentrations below the 2L Standard.
On August 26, 2015, ATC conducted a groundwater monitoring event of the seven on-site
monitoring wells. Analytical results indicated concentrations of MTBE above the 2L Standard in
monitoring wells MW-3, MW-4, and MW-6.
On March 8, 2018, ATC conducted a groundwater monitoring event of the seven on-site
monitoring wells. Analytical results indicated concentrations of MTBE above the 2L Standard in
monitoring wells MW-3 and MW-6. No other constituents exceeded the respective 2L
Standards.
On March 19, 2019, ATC collected groundwater samples from monitoring wells MW-1 through
MW-7. Analytical results indicated monitoring well MW-6 contained concentrations of MTBE, TBA,
and TAME above the 2L Standards, and diisopropyl ether (DIPE) and tert-butyl alcohol below
the 2L Standards. MTBE was also detected in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-3, and MW-4 below
the 2L Standard. ATC recommended the installation of a Type II groundwater monitoring well
downgradient monitoring well MW-6 to delineate the extent of MTBE.
On September 14, 2021 ATC supervised CCI in conducting an AFVR event using well MW-6,
between 08:00 and 16:00. Prior to the AFVR event, no LNAPL was measured in the well.
Volatile organic readings using a Photoionization Detector (PID) ranged from 97.6 parts per
million at the beginning of the event, to 1.6 ppm. Flow rates ranged from 155 to 901 cubic feet

per minute. Based on the emission data, approximately 0.33 pounds or 0.05 gallons equivalent
vaporous hydrocarbons were removed. No LNAPL was observed in the vacuum tank following
the AFVR event. On October 11, 2021, groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells
MW-1 through MW-6 and MW-8. GCLs were not exceeded in samples collected during this
monitoring event. Well MW-6 contained MTBE (29.5 µg/L), and well TW-1 contained MTBE
(2,850 µg/L) and TBA (154 µg/L) at concentrations above their respective 2L Standards. MTBE
concentrations in MW-6 and TW-1 decreased by approximately 96% and 14% respectively
following the September 2021 AFVR event.
3.3 Site and Regional Geology
According to the Geologic Map of North Carolina, produced by the State of North Carolina in
1985, the Site lies in the Charlotte Belt of the Piedmont Physiographic Province of North
Carolina. The rock types at the site have been identified as biotite gneiss and quartz diorite,
which are characterized as interlayered, with minor layers and lenses of hornblende gneiss,
metagabbro, mica schist, and granitic rock. The shallow subsurface in most areas of the
Piedmont contains residual soil overburden, including structure-free residuum, saprolite, and
partially weathered rock (PWR) that derive from in-place weathering of the crystalline bedrock.
Occasional areas containing recent deposits of alluvium in the uppermost subsurface are found
near streams and rivers. Saprolite and PWR typically contain some relict structures from the
original rock material. Depth to rock in the Piedmont ranges from ground surface at occasional
outcrops to depths of greater than 100 feet in areas of easily weathered rock. The site soils consist
of sandy clay.
3.4 Site and Regional Hydrogeology
The shallow aquifer occurrence varies in depth from ground surface at springs, creeks, and
rivers to as deep as 50 feet or more beneath upland surfaces in some parts of the Piedmont.
Water in the alluvium or unconsolidated residual material, including saprolite and PWR, usually
behaves as an unconfined aquifer, or water table, and will yield water with head elevation
equivalent to the first elevation where water was encountered. Permeability varies with lithology
and is typically relatively low in residual soils, with higher permeability in saprolite or PWR due
to relict rock texture and variable susceptibility to weathering exhibited by different minerals in
the rock. Groundwater flow in residual soils or alluvium is usually in rough concurrence with
local topographic conditions and is toward local drainage features. Depth to groundwater at the
site has ranged from 42.14 ft-toc to 52.75 ft-toc.
The bedrock fractures or other planar features of the Charlotte Belt Physiographic Province
generally constitute the bedrock aquifer, with the surrounding rock material being effectively
impermeable. Along with fractures, contacts between rock bodies probably constitute zones of
significant groundwater occurrence in the bedrock. The surrounding material and overlying
residuum tend to make the bedrock aquifer a semi-confined aquifer. That is, the overlying water
and soil weight normally results in pressure that causes water in a borehole, which intersects a
fracture or other feature, to rise above the elevation of the fracture or feature. Modern water
supply wells in the Piedmont, likely including those in the site vicinity, are typically installed with
a surface casing through the unconsolidated material, and an open borehole into the bedrock
where water-bearing fractures are encountered. The nearby WSWs likely have such
construction and access bedrock groundwater.

4.0 GROUNDWATER CHARACTERIZATION
4.1 Groundwater Levels
On December 30, 2022, a groundwater monitoring event was conducted using monitoring wells
MW-4, MW-6, and TW-1. Monitoring well construction details are summarized in Table 2.
Depth to water and total well depths were measured from TOC in the monitoring wells with an
electronic water level indicator. The depth to groundwater ranged from approximately 49.23
(MW-6) to 49.68 (MW-4) ft-bgs in the shallow wells.
Groundwater elevations are summarized in Table 3. Depth to water data was used to calculate
groundwater elevations, relative to an arbitrary benchmark of 100 feet at well MW-1.
Groundwater flow could not be evaluated due to the lack of data points, but has been generally
to the east during previous sampling events. A groundwater elevation map is included in Figure
4. Based on the December 30, 2023 groundwater elevations in the shallow wells and the deep
well, there was a slight upward gradient. For the October 11, 2021, there was a downward
gradient. Field notes and phtographs are provided as Appendix A.
4.3 Groundwater Quality
On December 30, 2022, groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells MW-4, MW-
6, and TW-1. During monitoring well sampling activities, a three-volume well purge was
implemented prior to groundwater sample collection to ensure a representative groundwater
sample. The water samples were collected in laboratory-supplied, preserved containers;
entered into chain of custody control; placed on ice; and delivered to North Carolina-accredited
Pace Laboratories in Huntersville, North Carolina. The groundwater samples were analyzed by
EPA Method 6200B for VOCs including oxygenates.
Groundwater field parameters including temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, oxidation
reduction potential (ORP), and pH were measured during the monitoring event. Field parameter
measurements for each well are presented in Table 4. Recent groundwater analytical results for
monitoring wells are summarized in Table 5, and Table 6 summarizes the historical
groundwater monitoring analytical results. The groundwater analytical results were compared to
the 2L Standards and GCLs. Groundwater analytical results indicate the following:
GCLs were not exceeded in samples collected during this monitoring event;
Well MW-6 contained MTBE (21.3 µg/L), and well TW-1 contained MTBE (2,000 µg/L)
above their respective 2L Standards; and
The constituent concentrations appear to be generally decreasing with time.
An overall general decreasing trend in contaminant concentrations has been observed in
monitoring wells with impact (MW-3, MW-4, and MW-6). In well MW-6, MTBE decreased
approximately 97 percent, as compared to the March 2019 sampling event. MTBE
concentrations in MW-6 and TW-1 decreased by approximately 96% and 14% respectively
following the September 2021 AFVR event and decreased in both wells by approximately 30%
since the October 11, 2011 sampling event. TAME has also decreased to less than detection
limits in MW-6 and TW-1. The decrease in concentrations may be due in part to natural
attenuation, changes in groundwater levels, and an AFVR event conducted in September 2021.
The analytical report is included in Appendix B. Figure 5 illustrates an isoconcentration map for
MTBE.

As part of ATC’s quality assurance and quality control (QA and QC) measures, a data review of
the laboratory reports was conducted. During the review, it was found that the samples were
received from the laboratory in acceptable condition and properly preserved. The samples were
analyzed within correct holding times and reported within the lab report, and the chain of
custody was properly completed by all parties. The laboratory QC report shows that an internal
blank was analyzed for each method that was used for the original samples. The laboratory
fortified blank (LFB) and laboratory control sample (LCS) data results were also provided for
each analytical method. ATC collected a field blank during the groundwater monitoring event.
Ethanol (191 J µg/L) was reported in the field blank, but not in the monitoring well samples.
Refer to the laboratory report in Appendix B for details regarding QA results for the laboratory
samples and any noted exceptions. Overall, ATC concludes that the laboratory results are
usable and any exceptions do not significantly impact the conclusions presented in this report.
5.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
On behalf of the Trust Fund Branch of the UST Section, ATC completed this GMR documenting
the groundwater monitoring event on December 30, 2022 for the Handy Pantry #10 site located
at 3601 Chapel Grove School Road in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. Results from
the groundwater monitoring event indicate the following:
Municipal water is not available to the area, and two water supply wells are located
within 500 feet of the site: the out-of-service on-site well and a multi-user supply well
(WSW-HA).
LNAPL was not detected in the monitoring well network;
MW-6 (21.6 micrograms per liter or µg/L) and TW-1 (2,000 µg/L);

DEFINITIONS
DF - Dilution Factor, if reported, represents the factor applied to the reported data due to dilution of the sample aliquot.
ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit.
TNTC - Too Numerous To Count
J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit.
MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit.
PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit.
RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and
bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix.
S - Surrogate
1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is
a combined concentration.
Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values.
LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate)
MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate)
DUP - Sample Duplicate
RPD - Relative Percent Difference
NC - Not Calculable.
SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up
U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected.
Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether.
A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA
Method 8260.
N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for
each analyte is a combined concentration.
Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as
"Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters.
Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes.
TNI - The NELAC Institute.
