Raleigh, North Carolina Terracon Consultants, Inc. 2401 Brentwood Road, Suite 107 Raleigh, NC 27604 P [919] 873 2211 F [919] 873 9555 terracon.com November 23, 2020 Mr. Mark Petermann North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Division of Waste Management 1646 Mail Service Center Raleigh, North Carolina 27699-1646 Email: mark.petermann@ncdenr.gov Re: Miscellaneous Letter Report Wilsonville General Store 10580 U.S. Highway 64 East Wilsonville, Chatham County, North Carolina UST Number: RA-552 Incident Number: 3534 Terracon Project No. 70149669B Dear Mr. Petermann: Terracon Consultants, Inc. (Terracon) is pleased to submit this miscellaneous letter report for the above referenced property. This report has been prepared in general accordance with North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), UST Section Guidelines for Assessment and Corrective Action for UST Releases, dated July 15, 2008, revised December 2013 and Task Authorization No. 02, approved on October 29, 2020. The Wilsonville General Store site, located at 10580 U.S. Highway 64 East in Wilsonville, North Carolina (Figure 1) (site), is comprised of 2.26 acres and contains a single-story commercial building operated as Wilsonville General Store (gas station, convenience store, and restaurant). The remainder of the site consists of paved, landscaped, and grassy areas. The site has been developed as a gasoline retail facility since the late 1930s. A release was discovered in August 1987 from a former on-site underground storage tank (UST) system, which consisted of: ◼ three 6,000-gallon gasoline USTs; ◼ one 4,000-gallon gasoline UST; and ◼ one 2,000-gallon diesel UST. Eight water supply wells are located within 1,000 feet of the source area and three currently serve as potable water sources. Water supply well WSW-1 is located on-site. WSW-3 and WSW-5 previously had point of entry (POE) systems. Information pertaining to these water supply wells is provided on Table 1 and the location of WSW-3 and WSW-8 is shown on Figure 2. Municipal water is reportedly available to properties located within 1,000 feet of the source area. Wilsonville General Store Wilsonville, North Carolina Terracon Project #70149669B Incident No. 3534 November 23, 2020 Responsive ■ Resourceful ■ Reliable 2 Terracon personnel mobilized to the site on November 5, 2020 to collect a groundwater sample from WSW-8. The groundwater sample from WSW-8 was collected and placed in laboratory-supplied glassware, labeled and stored in an ice-packed cooler. The sample along with the chain-of-custody documentation were delivered to Pace Analytical Services, LLC in West Columbia, South Carolina for analysis by EPA Method 6200B including methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), ethylene dibromide (EDB), and di-isopropyl ether (IPE.) Compounds were not detected above laboratory reporting limits in WSW-8. Groundwater analytical data are summarized in Table 2. The laboratory report and chain of custody are included in Appendix A. This task authorization was proposed and authorized in response to a request by Ms. Judith Intrator (the owner of the WSW-3/WSW-8 property) to sample WSW-8 after October 2020 analytical results in WSW-3 reported a detection of MTBE above laboratory reporting limits but below the 15A NCAC groundwater quality standard for the compound. Terracon and the property owner discussed possible options for potable water at the residence which included municipal water connection and switching plumbing to the residence from WSW-3 to WSW-8. Based on discussions with the NCDEQ project manager, the property owner, and the location of the nearest municipal water line, it appears that the most feasible option to resolve the property owner’s concerns is to re-configure the plumbing in the WSW-3 well house to direct water from WSW-8 to the residence and water from WSW-3 to the irrigation system on the property. According to the property owner, Ms. Judith Intrator, WSW-8 is reportedly installed at 550-feet below land surface and WSW-3 is reportedly installed at 300-feet below land surface. It should be noted that although petroleum compounds are not currently being detected in WSW-8 based on its current pumping rate and frequency, if WSW-8 is made the primary source of potable water for the residence and its pumping rate and frequency are significantly increased, it is possible that the petroleum compounds could be pulled toward WSW-8 and be detected in future sampling. Future sampling events should include sampling for WSW-3 and WSW-8, in addition to WSW-4 to monitor potential contaminates drawn towards WSW-8. If you have any questions regarding this report or the assessment activities, please contact us at (919) 873-2211. Sincerely, Terracon Consultants, Inc. Kyle F. Church Justin L.
