PCB Landfill Report
Thank you for your interest in the current status of the monitoring of
the Warren County PCB Landfill.
The PCB Landfill is monitored regularly by the North Carolina State
Division of Solid Waste Management including the following:
MONTHLY VISUAL AND OPERATIONAL INSPECTION Each month an
employee of the state conducts a thorough inspection of the
landfill area and pumping facilities. This inspection
is to make sure that fences and pumps are in place and in
working order. Inspection is made of the vegetation and
grounds to make sure that there is no evidence of vegetation,
animal activity or other factors which would compromise the
integrity of the landfill cover. This monthly inspection
takes approximately 4 to 6 hours. At the conclusion of the
inspection reports are filed and copies sent to my office.
If problems are noted related to vegetation the
North Carolina Department of Transportation is notified and
corrective action is taken. The local DOT office is
responsible for regular maintenance at the site.
In one case evidence of groundhog activity was noted.
The Department of Agriculture was brought in to solve the
problems.
TWICE YEARLY CHEMICAL ANALYSIS TESTS Twice yearly complete
analysis are done to determine if there are any detectable
levels of contaminations. These tests include:
1. LEACHATE COLLECTION Beneath the bottom liners are
collection pools to collect any water which does seep
through the landfill. These pools are pumped and
chemical tests done on the water. This is the spot
which most likely would provide the earliest warning
of any potential for contamination from the landfill.

2. GROUND WATER Four groundwater monitoring wells
have been placed around the landfill site. These are
wells placed to reach the same groundwater sources
which would be used for private water supplies in
the area.
3. SURFACE WATER Tests are conducted on two streams
(Richneck Creek and an unnamed tributary) nearest the
landfill. Samples are taker, of the water upstream and
downstream from the landfill site. Samples are also
taken of the stream bed sediment upstream and downstream
from the site.
4. LANDFILL SURFACE Soil samples are taken from the
land on the side of the landfill cover.
The monitoring and sampling are quite thorough. There have been no
detectable amounts of PCB contamination in any of the above categories.
Copies of monitoring and sampling reports are available through my
office. Please contact me if you need further information.
Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions.
