State of North Carolina Department of Environment, Health, and Natural Resources Division of Solid Waste Management P.O. Box 27687 · Raleigh, North Carolina 27611-7687 James G. Martin, Governor William W. Cobey, Jr., Secretary April 30, 1990 MEMORANDUM TO: FROM: RE: Mr. E.B. Jackson, Assistant Secretary Department of Crime Control and Public Safety Bobby Lutfy, Hydrogeologist Solid Waste Section The PCB Landfill Monthly Inspection William L. Meyer Director The Monthly Inspections of the PCB Landfill for March and April have not shown any significant changes in the condition of the landfill facility. The Solid Waste Section has been testing the leachate collection pumping system and trying to make some repairs to the system in an effort to enable leachate to be pumped from the collection sump. Plans are also being made to repair the spray irrigation system so that the treated leachate may be land applied over the landfill surface. Ground and surface water samples for the semi-annual sampling were collected in April. Additional samples were also taken to test the soil and vegetation of the landfill cap, soil from the leachate lagoon, and sand and charcoal from the leachate filter system. The Department of Transportation had mowed the grass at the landfill facility. Once again I would like to request that herbicides not be used around the fences of the monitoring wells as this could introduce contaminants to the wells. The grass around the wells should be cut periodically to enable a clear area for sampling the wells; however, a weed-eater or some other manual means of cutting the grass in the vicinity of the monitoring wells should be used, rather than herbicides in order to avoid possible contamination of the wells.
