Removal of the PCB-
contaminated soil from the
sides of main roadS In a
number of counties, In-
cluding Granville, Is foolish,
to say th~ least; un-
necessary ·and possibly
dangerous, to say the mc)st.
· Recent and not-so-rilcent
Incidents in our natlOI') tell
us all . too clearly that a
whole lot of Indifference has
been employed In the
disposal of chemical wastes.
The indifference has been on
the part of companies .and
the government. And there
has been a lot of stupidity on·
the part of people who have
come Into contact with It. All
of this adds up to a genuine
fear on the part of residents
of Warren County, and that
fear, I believe, Is justified.
First, the chemical had
been on the l"oadsldes for
four years and had ·been
treated with a charcoal
spray. Grass heG grown up
on the side of all these roads,
through the PCB-
contaminated soil. There Is
no evidence whatsoever that
anything has· happened to
adjacent farmland, any
water supply, or any animal
during that time. So, under
these circumstances, why
move It?

column, that I would not

to atlow others express their
views In letters rather than
giving ·my own as .1 have
done here.
For the lite of me, as they say, I annot understand
why anyone would want to .
hold • high public office, .
such as governor.
On the schedule of Gov.
Jim Hunt, which our office
receives each week, are 26
different functions which he
has attended or will attend
this week. Some are in
Raleigh, of course, but
many Involve a lot of travel.
He didn't have to leave
Raleigh for the first two
functions on Monday. On
Tuesday, he was in Marriott
for a savings and loan
· MNtiae, took· part in a
groundbreaking ceremony
in Wake Forest, took part In a dedication of an ex-
.,pressway in High Point,
1hen held a press conference
and made a speech at Elon
