GOOD MORNING LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
.,. I WE CALLED THIS PRESS BRIEFING TODAY TO
DISCUSS WITH YOU THE SELECTION OF WARREN
COUNTY AS THE SITE FOR THE STORAGE OF PCB
CONTAMINATED SOIL AND THE SAFETY ISSUES
THAT CONTINUE TO BE RAISED ABOUT THE LANDFILL,
MORE SPECIFICA ~LY, WE WANT TO ADDRESS:
(1) THE ISSUE OF WHY WARREN COUNTY WAS
CHOSEN FOR THE LANDFILL AND,
(2) WHY THIS LANDFILL IS SAFE, AND CAPABLE
OF INDEFINITE UY PROTECTING THE PEOPLE
AND ENVIRONME~T IN THE AREA,
OPPONENTS HAYS SAID THE LANDFILL SITING
DECISION WAS POLITICAL, IT WAS NOT, THE

DECISION WAS BASED ON A NUMBER OF TECHNICAL
CONSIDERATIONS, OPPONENTS CLAIM IT WAS
RACIALLY MOTIVATED, IT WAS NOT, NEITHER .
RACE NOR ECONOMICS WERE EVER ISSUES IN
LOCATING THIS LANDFILL,
THE STATE'S BEST PROFESSIONAL/
TECHNICAL PEOPLE1 WITH ASSISTANCE FROM
SPECIALISTS AT THE EPA1 MADE THE DECISION
TO LOCATE THE LANDFILL NEAR AFTON,
THE DECISION WAS BASED1 AS l HAVE
SAID BEFORE, COMPLETELY ON SOUND TECHNICAL
DATA, WE HAVE SELECTED THE BEST AVAILABLE
SITE AND ARE CONFIDENT THE LANDFILL WILL
PROTECT THE HEALTH1 WELFARE AND ENVIRONMENT
OF ALL PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN NORTH CAROLINA,

OF EPA AND THE STATE AffiENCIES WHO WERE
