PCB Removal to Start

RALEIGH ---Specially-trained and equip~ed state transportation
crews will start Sept. 15 to remove PCB-laced soil from
North Carolina roadsides to the federally approved landfill site
at Warren County, according to Heman R. Cl ark, Crime Control and
Public Safety secretary.
The pick-up operation was given the go ahead after Jim Lineberger's
Grading and Paving, Inc ., contractor for the storage site, completed
work on the landfill.
Removal operations will start on an 11-rnil e section of NC-58 in
Warren County. This section is one of five locations found to have the
highest concentrations of the toxic substance.
An estimated 256 DOT employees divided into five crews are
expected to take about six weeks to remove the contaminated soil in the
14 affected counties, according to William W. Phillips, project
coordinator and assistant to the Secretary of Crime Control and Public
Safety. Actual pick up along the roadside should begin at 8 a.m.
Work at the other four sites with high concentrations of PCB's
is scheduled to begin the next day.
