In early May, the Solid & Hazardous Waste Managemen t Branch of the Environmental
Health Section, investigated the Mickie Hewlin resi dence and its proximity to
the PCB spill on N.C. highway 561.
The residence and garden si t e were located approximatel y l ,000 feet from N.C. 561
where the spill was located . The well serving the H~wlins is a community well
used by several families living along S.R. 1375. It is an unprotected dug well
approximately 35 feet deep with the water level appro ximately 30 feet below the
ground s~fface. It is located approximately 760 feet from the PCB spi l l site on
N.C. 561 and is 5 to 10 feet upgradient from the spi l l . The houses hav e no indoor
plumbing and an outdoor privy is located approximately 400 feet from the well .
Water samples taken from the well and soil samples taken from several points around
the Hewlin house and from several points in the garden revealed no PCBs or other
organic compounds . In addition, heavy meta l ana l ysi s of the drinking water (As ,
Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg) revealed levels below EPA drinking water standards .

of her child's birth defects.
