Groundwater Monitoring Activities for the Fourth Quarter
1993, ____________________ _
This report for the fourth quarter 1993 presents findings from groundwater monitoring
conducted at Operable Units One and Two at the National Starch and Chemical Company site
on Cedar Springs Road, Salisbury, North Carolina.
Operable Unit One. Groundwater samples from four downgradient groundwater
monitoring wells (NS29, NS30, NS31, and NS32) and four bedrock extraction wells (EX0l,
EX02, EX03, and EX04) were collected on October 11, 1993. All samples were analyzed for
selected Target Compound List (TCL), volatile and semivolatile organic compounds (VOC
and SVOC), and Target Analyte List (T AL) metals. In addition, samples from the monitoring
wells and extraction wells were analyzed for selected water quality parameters to monitor
influent loadings for the Combined Pretreatment System (CPS). A sample analysis summary
is provided in Table 1. The samples were collected in accordance with U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) (Region IV) protocols. The TCL and TAL compounds were
analyzed under EPA Level IV Contract Laboratory Program (CLP) protocol.
All plume periphery extraction wells were in operation during sampling. All extraction wells
were shut down in late November through late December due to construction of the CPS and
removal of sludge from the pretreatment lagoons. Wells EX02 and EX03 were started the
last week in December. Trench area extraction wells EX05 through EXl0 went through
startup and shakedown operations.
Results from the chemical analysis for Operable Unit One and Operable Unit Two are
presented in Tables 2 and 3, respectively. The list of compounds presented in these tables
represents the contaminants specified in the Operable Unit One Record of Decision (ROD).
The list of compounds from the ROD and associated cleanup levels are provided in Table 4
for reference. Figure 1 is a site map showing the well locations. The certificates of analysis
are provided in Appendix A.
For the downgradient monitoring wells, two VOCs and one SVOC exhibited levels that
exceed cleanup levels (shaded values in Table 2). Chemical data from samples collected
during the 1992 event and the first, second, third, and fourth quarters 1993 indicate that the
contaminant concentrations in wells NS29, NS30, and NS31 have generally decreased over
time and that no contaminants are present in well NS32. Figures 2 through 6 present

summaries of data (in bar-chart form) from all four quarters of 1993 (and the 1992 event) for
the five organic compounds that have exceeded cleanup criteria. These five organic
compounds are acetone, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,2-dichloropropane, methylene chloride, and
bis(2-chloroethyl)ether. Methylene chloride was not reponed from the laboratory. Data from
monitoring well NS32 is not presented graphically (in bar-chart form) since contamination has
not been found in any samples. Acetone, which usually leads the contaminant front, was
present at significant levels during the second and third quarters 1993 in operating extraction
wells EX02 and EX03. High levels of acetone were also present during the 1992 and fust
quarter 1993 events in three of the four downgradient monitoring wells; however, acetone
levels dropped significant! y during the second and third quarters and was not detected during
the founh quarter. This drop in acetone levels in the monitoring wells indicates that pumping
is controlling the spread of acetone. 1,2-Dichloroethane and 1,2-dichloropropane were present
in well NS31 at 20 parts per billion (ppb) and 31 ppb, respectively. Bis(2-chloroethyl)ether
was present at wells NS29, NS30, and NS31 with the highest level at 25 ppb. The levels of
these three contaminants have generally decreased over time. Levels of 1,2-dichloroethane
have consistently been elevated at extraction well EX02, ranging from 27,000 ppb to 34,000
ppb during the past three quarters.
Water level measurements were taken (October 11, 1993) from the four downgradient
monitoring wells, several other selected monitoring wells, and the four extraction wells.
NS32 water level was not measured due to artesian conditions. Results of the water level
measurements are provided in Table 5. Groundwater elevations and a bedrock groundwater
contour map are provided in Figure 7.
Hydraulic control of the contaminant plume is difficult to ascenain at this time due to the
extraction wells not being in full operation. The efficiency of plume control and hydraulic
control can be evaluated in more detail after all extraction wells are operating. Well NS32
has been artesian during all monitoring events.
Operable Unit Two. Groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells NS09,
NSIO, NS!!, and NS15 on October II, 1993. All samples were analyzed for selected TCL
VOCs and SVOCs, and TAL metals. In addition, the samples were analyzed for selected
water quality parameters to provide design information and project start-up flow rates for the
CPS. A sample analysis summary is provided in Table 1. The samples were collected in
accordance with EPA (Region IV) protocol. The TCL and TAL compounds were analyzed
under EPA Level IV CLP protocol.

Results from the chemical analysis for Operable Unit Two are presented in Table 3. The list
of compounds presented in Table 3 represent the contaminants specified in the Operable Unit
One ROD. The list of compounds from the ROD and associated cleanup levels are provided
in Table 4 for reference. Figure 1 is a site map showing the well locations. The certificates
of analysis are provided in Appendix A.
Three VOCs and three metals exhibited levels that exceed cleanup levels (shaded values in
Table 3). Elevated levels of 1,2-dichloroethane were detected in three of the four wells
ranging from 530 ppb to 4,700 ppb. These results are very similar to results from the
previous quarter except that 1,2-dichloroethane was not detected in well NS 11. Vinyl
chloride was detected at 75 ppb (estimated) and xylenes at 560 ppb in wells NS09 and NS 11,
respectively. Levels of barium, chromium, and manganese exceeded cleanup levels for the
third consecutive quarter but were within one order of magnitude.
Water level measurements were taken (October 11, 1993) from each of the four monitoring
wells. Results are provided in Table 6. Groundwater elevations and a bedrock groundwater
contour map, constructed primarily from Operable Unit One wells, are provided in Figure 7.

November 20, 1993

Case: PCHAR
SDG: NASOl
SAMPLE DELIVERY GROUP NARRATIVE
Laboratory: PACE New England, Inc. of Hampton, NH
Lab Numbers: 37965/37995/38016
Analytical Protocol: OLMOl.8/ILMOl.2 with modified target lists. Format A disk.
Sample Receipt: Samples for this SDG were received at PACE Charlotte Laboratory
from October 13-15, 1993. They were forwarded by overnight carrier to PACE New
England for analysis. Laboratory sample numbers were assigned ae listed on the
sample table which follows this narrative. Field sample identifiers were abbreviated
to accommodate CLP software requirements. Although temperature blanks were not
included with the shipments, samples were received cool and in good condition.
Bottles and labels matched the Chains-of-Custody (COC) provided, with exceptions
noted as follows:
The samples received at PACE New England on 10/14/93 were assigned PACE lab# 37965.
The coc listed four samples for metals analysis (EXOl, EX02, EX03, and EX04) which
were missing from this shipment. The project manager at PACE Charlotte was notified
of this omission and the samples were included in the shipment received on 10/16/93.
The second group of samples was received at PACE New England on 10/15/93 and was
assigned PACE lab# 37995. This shipment had no discrepenciee.
The final group of samples was received at PACE New England on 10/16/93 and was
assigned PACE lab# 38016. This shipment included the four samples for metals
analysis which were not included in the 10/14/93 shipment. These samples were not
listed on the chain of custody for this shipment. In addition, the samples listed
on the ·chain of custody as NS-31B for metals, volatile organics, and semivolatile
organics were a duplicate of sample NS-31 and were meant to provide adequate volume
for quality control analyses for this SDG. Thie change was made at the request of
the project manager at PACE Charlotte after consultation with her client. Any
references on raw data to samples 38016-2, -10, or -16 refer to the extra sample
provided for NS-31.
Volatile Analysis I Samples were analyzed within holding time by the CLP water
method. The project target compound list consisted of thirteen CLP compounds with
no nontarget search requirement. Standards and tunes met all calibration criteria.
Blanke were free of target compound contamination. Matrix spikes performed on sample
NS31 exhibited acceptable spike recoveries and analytical precision. Internal
standard areas and surrogate recoveries were acceptable for all analyses.
Samples EX02, EX03, NSlO, NSll, NS15, and NS9 required dilutions in order to
quantitate high levels of target compounds.
The reporting software caused the Form 1 sample data sheets to contain an extra
trailing zero in the mass/volume field. Volumes should be considered accurate to the
tenth of a milliliter.

TH! ASSUAANCE Of OUAlllY
SDG Narrative
Case PCHAR SDG NASOl
Semivolatile Analysis: The majority of samples were extracted within CLP holding
time (5days from receipt) by the water method. Samples of lab number 37965 (EXOl,
EX02, EX03, EX04) were extracted on the sixth day from receipt. Since this was on
the seventh day from sampling (SW846 holding time), the data quality remained
acceptable. This was discussed between the PACE New England and PACE Charlotte
Organics Managers. Analyses proceeded within holding time.
Standards and DFTPP tunes met calibration requirements. The target compound list for
this project consisted of bis(2-Chloroethyl)ether and 4-Nitrophenol. These compounds
were not detected in the method blanks. Matrix spikes conducted on sample NS31 had
acceptable 4-Nitrophenol recoveries. Internal standard areas were acceptable for all
analyses. Surrogate recoveries were compliant although there were some outliers
(NSll had 2FP at 10%, and EX04 had TBP at 2% which was acceptable for the diluted
extract). Sample NS9 required dilution which caused the surrogates to go below
detectable limits.
Samples NS9, NS15, NSlO, and EX04 required dilutions for high levels of nontarget
compounds. Nontarget searches were not requested for this project.
The reporting software caused the Form 1 sample data sheets to contain an extra
trailing zero in the mass/volume field. Volumes should be considered accurate to the
milliliter.
Metals Analysis and Cyanide: The analytical protocol for metals analytes established
for this project is compliant with the ILMOl.2 except as noted below. Holding times
follow CLP rules and were calculated from verified time of sample receipt (VTSR).
In several cases, the shortened field IDs were prefixed with an "M." to accommodate
a six-character software requirement. Matrix quality control was performed on sample
MMNS31 for metals analyses.
ICP Analysis: Samples were prepared in one water batch on 10/20/93. Samples were
analyzed in two analytical sequences on the TJAOl. One sequence was performed on
11/08/93, the second on 11/09/93 for a manganese dilution only. samples were
analyzed for arsenic, and selenium in one sequence on 11/08/93 on the TJA02. Several
samples were diluted due to high levels of interferents, with no effect on the CRDL.
Spike recovery for sample MMNS31 met CLP QC limits. Cadmium is flagged as out of
control limits on Form 5, however, according to the CLP SOW 125.4% rounds to 125% and
therefore the recovery for cadmium is acceptable. Sample results are not flagged
with the "N" qualifier accordingly. A post digestion spike was not performed. The
percent recovery for the LCS for cadmium was 120.6%, this is with in the laboratory's
upper control limit established by in house control charts. No cadmium was observed
in any of the samples. Serial dilution analyses were performed on sample MMNS31 with
acceptable results.
