Groundwater samples from four downgradient groundwater monitoring wells (NS29, NS30, NS31, and NS32) and four bedrock extraction wells (EX0l, EX02, EX03, and EX04) were collected on May 4, 1993. Extraction wells EX02 and EX03 were in operation. All samples were analyzed for Target Compound List (TCL), volatile and semivolatile organic compounds (VOCs and SVoes), and Target Analyte List (TAL) metals. In addition, samples from the four downgradient monitoring wells were analyzed for selected water quality parameters to monitor influent loadings to the Plume Periphery Pretreatment System (PPPS) and to project start-up flow rates for the Combined Pretreatment System (CPS). A sample analysis summary is provided in Table 1. The TCL and TAL compounds were analyzed under U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Level IV Contract Laboratory Program (CLP) protocol. Results from the chemical analysis for Operable Unit One and Operable Unit Two are presented in Tables 2 and 3, respectively. The list of compounds presented in these tables represents the contaminants specified in the Operable Unit One Record of Decision (ROD). The list of compounds from the ROD and associated cleanup levels are provided in Table 4 for reference. Figure 1 is a site map showing the well locations. The Certificates of Analysis are provided in Appendix A. The most predominant contaminants are voes. For the extraction wells, four VOCs, one svoe, and one metal were detected at levels that exceed cleanup levels (shaded values in Table 2). Samples from extraction wells EX02 and EX03 contained elevated levels of acetone, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,2-dichloropropane, and bis(2-chloroethyl)ether. For the downgradient wells, two Voes, one SVOC, and one metal exhibited levels that exceed cleanup levels (shaded values in Table 2). Compared to the first quarter data from the downgradient monitoring wells, there has been a considerable decrease in levels of acetone and 1,2-dichloroethane in wells NS29, NS30, and NS31. During the first quarter, acetone was detected in these wells ranging from 2,900 parts per billion (ppb) (NS30) to 12,000 ppb (NS29). Acetone was not detected in any of the downgradient wells during the second quarter. Levels of 1,2-dichloroethane have decreased by one order of magnitude in each of these wells. KN/1162/WPI 162.TXTAJ7-12-93/04 I I I I I I ,, I I I I I I I I I I I I I Water level measurements were taken (May 3, 1993) from all four downgradient and several other selected monitoring wells and all four extraction wells. Results are provided in Table 5. Groundwater elevations and a bedrock groundwater contour map is provided as Figure 2. The extraction wells have been fouled by a black substance that is probably a result of iron and manganese precipitation. This precipitation was the apparent cause of the pump failure in well EX02 during the first quarter (February 1993). The motor in EX02 was replaced and has been functioning properly. Operable Unit Two. Groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells NS09, NSlO, NSll, and NS15 on May 4, 1993. All samples were analyzed for TCL VOCs and SVOCs, and T AL metals. In addition, the samples were analyzed for selected water quality parameters to provide design information and project start-up flow rates for the CPS. A sample analysis summary is provided in Table 1. The TCL and TAL compounds were analyzed under EPA Level IV CLP protocol. Results from the chemical analysis are presented in Table 3. I • I I Activities Planned for the Third Quarter 1993. _____ _ Operable Unit One. Groundwater monitoring will continue. Operation of extraction wells EX02 and EX03 will continue. Start-up of the Combined Pretreatment System is scheduled for September 1993. Upon completion of the pretreatment system start-up, extraction wells EX0 1 and EX04 will be returned to service so that all extraction wells are operating. However, the data indicate that the plume is not present at these wells. Operable Unit Two. Groundwater monitoring will continue. Presently, bids are being solicited from subcontractors to install the six new extraction wells (EX05, EX06, EX07, EX08, EX09, and EXlO) in the trench area. Construction is scheduled for September 1993 with completion by November 1993 and start-up in February 1994. The extraction well locations are shown in Figure 1. Quality Control The volatiles analyses were performed by purge and trap with a J&W DB-624 megabore column on a I Finnigan INCOS GC/MS/DS unit. The sample analyses went well. The twenty-fold dilution of EX-03- 5/93 was eight days past sample holding time. The data compared well, and the analyses were considered reliable. Matrix interferences were observed using the method primary and secondary mass ions in the I calculation of the surrogate 1,2-dichloroethane-d4 for samples NS-15-5/93, NS-09-5/93 and NS-10-5/93. Another ion, mass 67, was used successfully in quantifying recoveries of this surrogate. There were no problems seen in final data review. I The semivolatiles analyses were performed by direct injection of sample extract on a Restek XTI-5 capillary column on a Finnigan 4500 GC/MS/DS unit. The sample analyses met with some difficulties. I The surrogate recoveries for samples NS-09-5/93, NS-10-5/93, NS-15-5/93 and EX-04-5/93 were very poor. This appears to be sample matrix related as there were heavy emulsions noted during separatory funnel extractions. There was insufficient sample for reanalysis and confirmation for these samples. The I organic background in these samples appears to be long chain alkanes and long chain organic acids. There were no other problems seen in final data review. EX- 1,. 02-5/93 required dilutions for acetone, 1,2-dichloroethane, and 1,2-dichloropropane. l ,2-Dichloroethane- d4 was successfully integrated with a compliant recovery in the undiluted analysis of EX-02-5/93 using mass 104. Manual integration with this mass was necessary due to sample matrix interferences with the I primary and secondary mass ions. The final dilution concentration of 1,2-dichloropropane was below the practical quantification limit, but considering its close agreement with the mid-level dilution, the value was considered reliable. There were no other problems seen in final data review. I The semivolatiles analyses were performed by direct injection of sample extract on a Restek XTI-5 capillary column on a Finnigan 4500 GC/MS/DS unit. The sample analyses went well. Two analyses had I one low surrogate recovery each, but the recoveries were greater than ten percent, and overall all analyses met CLP QC criteria. The MS/MSD had one low spike recovery and two RPDs outside advised limits. These appear to be a function of matrix. EX-02-5/93 required dilution for bis (2-chloroethyl) ether. Spike recovery (accuracy) results were within acceptance limits for all parameters by ICP, GFAA, and CV AA analyses except for cadmium by ICP analysis and arsenic by GFAA analysis. Both analytes were slightly outside acceptance limits (73.1 % and 72.4%, I respectively). Duplicate RFD (precision) results were within acceptance limits for all parameters by ICP, GFAA and CV AA analyses except for thallium by ICP analysis. As thallium is reported by GFAA I. analysis, this does not adversely affect the data. Selenium was spiked at 10 x CLP required spiking level during sample digestion.
