On behalf of Olin Corporation, and Syngenta Crop Protection (the Companies), please find attached
one copy of the analytical results for the October 2002 sampling of the Geigy Site downgradient
area. To facilitate your review, analytical data summary tables and figures showing detected
concentrations at sample locations are attached .
Samples for the monitoring event were collected October 22, 2002 through October 25, 2002. Findings of the monitoring results (Tables 1, 2 and 3) include:
Upper Black Creek Aquifer
• BHC isomer concentrations decreased in 5 out of the 6 Upper Black Creek Aquifer monitoring wells since the previous (April 2002) monitoring event. The only increase in
BHC isomer concentration since the April 2002 monitoring event occurred at well MW-26D .
• Trace levels of alpha-chlordane, dieldrin, endrin ketone, gamma-chlordane, and heptachlor
epoxide were reported for the first time in 5 wells during the April 2002 monitoring event. Of these compounds, only dieldrin and endrin ketone were detected in wells MW-30D and MW-22D at estimated concentrations (J-flagged). The estimated concentrations are at levels that are very near their associated method detection limit and therefore may reflect instrument noise or non-Site related sample carry-over rather than changes in groundwater quality
conditions .

• Pesticides were not detected in wells MW-32L, MW-36L, MW-38L, and MW-39L. Well
MW-36L serves as a sentinel monitoring point for Town Well No. 2. Wells MW-32L and
MW-38L adjoin Aberdeen Creek and well MW-39L adjoins Ray's Mill Creeks .
• The concentrations of BHC isomers detected in monitoring wells MW-27L, MW-38L, and
PZ-3 during the April 2002 monitoring event either decreased or were below the method
detection limit in October 2002 .
• All BHC isomer concentrations in monitoring wells MW-37L and PZ-2 increased since the
April 2002 monitoring event. The largest increase occurred at MW-37L where the October
2002 alpha-BHC concentration was 3.1 ug/L, 0.6 ug/L higher than in April 2002 .
• The change in BHC isomer concentrations in monitoring wells MW-22L, MW-25L, MW-
31L, MW-40L, and PZ-5 since the April 2002 monitoring event were mixed (increases and
decreases observed), but are generally comparable to all other preceding monitoring events .
• No aldrin, alpha-chlordane, dieldrin, endrin ketone, gamma-chlordane, and heptachlor
epoxide were detected at any of the Lower Black Creek Aquifer wells in October 2002 .
• Lower Black Creek Aquifer October 2002 groundwater data is summarized in Table 2 and in
Figure 2 .
Stream Surfnce Water
• No BHC isomers were detected at McFarland's Branch surface water locations SW-01.
Alpha, beta-, delta-and gamma-BHC isomers were detected at McFarland's Branch surface
water locations SW-02 and SW-03 at concentrations lower than what was observed in April
2002. Concentrations of BHC isomers detected at these locations are at levels that are
protective of potential human and ecological receptors .
• BHC isomers (alpha-, beta-, delta-, and gamma-) were detected in surface water samples SW-
04, SW-05, SW-06, SW-07, SW-08 and SW-ll-2 from Aberdeen Creek at estimated (J-
flagged) concentrations. 1n each case, the BHC isomer concentrations decreased relative to
the concentrations observed in April 2002. In addition, the BHC isomers are at levels that are
protective of potential human and ecological receptors .
• No pesticides were detected in surface water samples collected from Ray's Mill Creek .
• October 2002 surface water data is summarized in Table 3 and in Figure 3 .
Private Well S'11n1ey
• No newly installed private wells were identified during the October 2002 sampling event.
In accordance with the sampling frequency described in the approved Remedial Action Work Plan,
monitoring of the downgradient area will be conducted every six months during years four and five
of the remedy. The comprehensive monitoring event will be conducted during April 2003.
Monitoring of McFarland's Branch surface water locations SW-02 and SW-03 will be conducted
on a quarterly basis, as discussed in our responses to the Agencies' comments dated June 2001.
