SUPERFUND SECTION Atlanta, GA 30303-3104 VIA FEDERAL EXPRESS RE: Seasonality Evaluation Geigy Chemical Corporation Site Aberdeen, North Carolina Dear Giezelie: As discussed during our meeting of July 10, 2001, this letter presents the findings of work conducted by the Companies to determine if downgradient area remedy groundwater monitoring results vary on a quarterly basis due to seasonal weather and/or evapotranspiration changes. In particular, the analysis was conducted to determine if the proposed revision to the semi-annual monitoring schedule (i.e., conduct sampling in April and October rather than January and July) would bias sample results. The findings of our analysis indicate that the proposed revision to the semi-annual monitoring schedule would not significantly bias sample results, and therefore not affect remedy decisions . Technical Approach Seasonality testing was conducted using alpha-, beta-, delta-and gamma-BHC concentration data. Analytical results for the 26 Upper and Lower Black Creek aquifer monitoring wells that are presently sampled under the remedy were evaluated using statistical methods. Monitoring results having a high frequency of non-detect values (e.g., results for well MW-36L) were not included in the evaluation since potential seasonal concentration changes are not a concern in this case. Analysis of variance (ANOV A) tests, a statistical procedure commonly used to evaluate differences between groups of data (see EPA guidance document "Methods for Evaluating the Attainment of Cleanup Standards, Volume 2, Groundwater, July, 1992)" were conducted to determine if the mean (average) values of alpha-, beta-, delta-and gamma-BHC concentrations differ from quarter to quarter. ANOVA tests were conducted using JMP (version 4.0.2) statistical analysis software. Where ANOV A test results indicated mean BHC concentrations differ at the 95% significance level between two quarters, the Companies concluded that evidence for seasonal effects exists . ~· a • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Findings Results of the ANOVA tests used to identify seasonal effects on alpha-, beta-, delta-and gamma-BHC concentration data are presented in Attachment I. The ANOV A tests indicate that BHC concentrations do not exhibit seasonal effects among 23 of the 26 wells that are monitored for the remedy . The Agencies should note that two of the three wells that exhibit seasonality (MW-22D and MW-24D) monitor groundwater quality in the Upper Black Creek aquifer, where existing quarterly data already indicate that overall BHC concentrations have declined under the remedy. Additionally, the remaining well that exhibits seasonality (MW-25L) would not appreciably affect decisions made during the 5-year remedy review, since monitoring data from the other Lower Black Creek aquifer wells will be available for review, and because the magnitude of potential bias is relatively small . In summary, statistical analysis of quarterly monitoring data obtained over the last three years indicates that monitoring groundwater in the downgradient area during the second and fourth quarters would not bias sample results for 23 of the 26 wells, and only marginally influence results for 3 of the 26 wells. The potential sample bias at wells MW-22D, MW-24D, and MW-25L would not impact remedy decisions. The Companies therefore request the Agencies' approval to revise the monitoring schedule as discussed during our meeting of July 10, 2001.
