To facilitate your review, analytical data summary tables and figures showing detected concentrations at sample locations are attached. Samples for the second quarter monitoring event were collected April 12, 1999 through April 15, 1999. Monitoring results (Table I) indicate that the remedy continu~s to be protective of potential human and ecological receptors, as well as area streams. Findings that support this conclusion include: I Tpper Black Creek Aquifer • Pesticide concentrations in monitoring wells located west of the groundwater extraction system (i.e., in the downgradient area) are comparable to levels found during previous monitoring events. The lateral extent of pesticides exceeding groundwater performance standards in the Upper Black Creek aquifer continues to be less than that observed during the initial downgradient area groundwater-sampling event (June 1996 for wells PZ-5, MW-31L and MW-32L; August 1995 for all other wells). • Beta-BHC was detected at a concentration of 0.1 ug/1 in the groundwater sample collected on April 14, 1999 from monitoring well MW-34D, and at a concentration of 0.13 ug/l in a confirmatory sample collected from MW-34D on June 15, 1999. No otherTCL pesticides were detected in the April 14, 1999 or June 15, 1999 samples collected from this well. I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I • BHC isomer concentrations in monitoring wells located downgradient of the groundwater extraction system are below the maximum BHC isomer concentrations forecasted for the Upper Black Creek aquifer by the transport model (see Table 3). Tower Black Creek Aquifer • The extent of pesticides in the Lower Black Creek aquifer is similar to conditions reflected by previous quarterly monitoring events and the baseline sampling event (June 1996 for wells PZ-5, MW-31L and MW-32L; August 1995 for all other wells). • Pesticides were not detected in well MW-36L as part of this or previous quarterly sampling events for this well. Well MW-36L was installed to serve as a sentinel monitoring point for Town Well No. 2. • With the exception of BHC isomer concentrations reported for MW-27L and an estimated beta-BHC concentration reported for MW-22L, BHC levels in the Lower Black Creek aquifer are below the maximum concentrations forecasted by the transport model (see Table 4). Analytical results for monitoring wells surrounding MW-27L (i.e., MW-22L, MW-25L, MW-28L, MW-36L, MW-37L and PZ-3) indicate that the BHC levels observed at MW-27L are limited in extent and therefore· are not anticipated to affect the remedy duration or level of protection. • As predicted by Site groundwater flow and transport model simulations conducted for the Downgradient Groundwater Remedial Action Work Plan, BHC isomer concentrations in well MW-31L have experienced a slight increase due to the migration of peak BHC concentrations towards Aberdeen Creek. The BHC isomer concentrations at MW-3!L continue to be protective of groundwater concentrations at wells immediately downgradient of this general area (MW-32L and MW-38L). • Pesticides were not detected in wells MW-32L and MW-39L, which adjoin Aberdeen and Ray's Mill Creeks, respectively. Dieldrin was the only constituent detected in well MW-38L, located adjacent to Aberdeen Creek, at an estimated concentration of 0.054 ug/L. Dieldrin was not detected at any other monitoring well in the Lower Black Creek aquifer. Stream Surface Water • Analytical results for sentinel wells MW-32L, MW-38L and MW-39L, which monitor the Lower Black Creek aquifer prior to its discharge to surface water, were non-detect for the constituents found in Aberdeen Creek surface water samples and demonstrate that pesticides in downgradient area groundwater do not extend to Aberdeen and Ray's Mill Creeks. • Pesticides were not detected above the reported sample quantitation limits in the surface water sample collected from the headwaters of McFarland's Branch (SW-01). • Alpha-, beta-, delta-and gamma-BHC were detected at surface water locations SW-02 and SW-03 in McFarland's Branch. Concentrations detected at each location are nearly identical to previous quarterly monitoring levels, and slightly less than the concentrations reported for these locations during the June 1996 monitoring event. The results are within the range of surface water concentrations estimated for these locations by the transport model (Table 3-10 of the RA WP) and are at levels that are protective of potential human and ecological receptors. • Estimated concentrations of alpha-, beta-and delta-BHC were detected in surface water samples SW-04, SW-05, SW-07 and SW-08 collected on April 12, 1999 from Aberdeen Creek. Laboratory quality control problems were associated with the analysis of Aberdeen Creek surface water SW-06, collected on April 12, 1999. SW-06 was therefore re-sampled on June 15, 1999. Estimated concentrations of beta-and delta-BHC were detected in this surface water .sample at levels comparable to those reported for surface water samples I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I collected from SW-04, SW-05, SW-07 and SW-08 on April 12, 1999. • Surface water and groundwater analytical results collectively reveal that the pesticides detected in Aberdeen Creek are not Site-related. Aberdeen Creek surface water results reveal that surface water concentrations arc at levels that are protective of potential human and ecological receptors. • Pesticides were detected in Aberdeen Creek in an area that lies outside of the downgradient extent of Site-related pesticides (i.e., surface water sample SW-08, located upstream of the confluence with Ray's Mill Creek). This finding indicates the source of pesticides detected in Aberdeen Creek lies upstream of SW-08 and is not Site-related. • Pesticide concentrations are nearly identical among surface water samples collected from Aberdeen Creek at locations downstream and upstream of the confluence with McFarland's Branch, thereby further indicating that the estimated levels of pesticides in Aberdeen Creek are not attributable to Site conditions. Private Well Survey • A survey to identify newly installed residential water supply wells was performed as part of the quarterly monitoring event by driving each road in the downgradient area and conducting a visual inspection of the properties to locate pump houses and/or well heads. No newly installed private wells were identified. The Companies are reviewing preliminary results for the third quarter 1999 monitoring event and anticipate that the data will be reported to the Agencies next month.
