GEIGY SITE
GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
April 1, 1995
Beginning in April, Olin Corporation, Ciba-Geigy Corporation and Kaiser
Chemical & Aluminum Corporation will take groundwater samples at about a
dozen properties east of the center of Aberdeen and just west of a former
pesticides blending and retail facility located on N.C. 211, known as the Geigy
Site. The samples will be analyzed to determine whether or not chemical
compounds are present in the groundwater and whether they exceed approved
federal or state standards for those compounds. The sampling should take 30-45
days. The results will be given to the Environmental Protection Agency.
To the best of our knowledge, no one in the sampling area is drinking Ull5afe
waler. The Aberdeen municipal water system is tested regularly and must meet
strict state standards. Area residents can obtain additional information by
calling the Geigy Site lnfoline 800-424-2447.
Background
The Geigy Site is a two-acre, triangular-shaped parcel of land bordered by NC
211 to the north, the Aberdeen and Rocldish Railroad to the south and private
property to the east and west. The property contains partial concrete
foundations from two former warehouses, a small office building, and concrete
tank pad. Several empty storage tanks and a decontamination pad on the site
were used for previous soil removal activities.
From 1948 to 1967, the site was used by various companies as a facility where
compounds were blended to produce crop protection products. From 1968 to
1989, the site was used for retail sales and distribution of agricultural products
used to protect and fertilize tobacco, cotton and other crops in North Carolina
and throughout the Southeast.
In 1989, the companies and the Environmental Protection Agency entered into
an agreement for the companies to investigate the site. The companies have
since conducted a series of environmental and engineering studies and removed
nearly 5.5 million pounds of soil from the site. In 1996 the companies will
implement an EPA-approved clean-up plan, which will address site
groundwater and remaining soil.

SITE IDSTORY
Geigy Chemical Corporation Superfund Site
Olin Corporation, Ciba-Geigy Corporation, Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation
Site Description
The Geigy Site is located one-half mile east of Aberdeen on NC 211 in Moore
County, N.C. The two-acre, triangular-shaped site is bordered by Highway 211
to the north, the Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad to the south and private
property to the east and west. The property contains partial concrete foundations
from two former warehouses, a small office building, a concrete tank pad, empty
storage tanks and a decontamination pad.
From 1948 to 1967, the site was used by various companies as a facility where
compounds were blended to produce crop protection products. From 1968 to
1989, the site was used for retail sales and distribution for agricultural products.
Products distributed and sold at the site were used for many years to protect and
fertilize tobacco, cotton and other crops in North Carolina and throughout the
Southeast.·
Site History
1989 EPA names the site to the National Superfund Priorities List. Companies
remove 1.4 million pounds of soil and debris.
1990 EPA enters into an Administrative Order on Consent with Olin
Corporation, Ciba-Geigy Corporation and Kaiser Aluminum and
Chemical Corporation to conduct a remedial investigation feasibility
study at the site.
1991 Companies conduct a second removal of soil from the site --about 4
million pounds --significantly reducing levels of compounds in the soil.
1992 EPA issues a Record of Decision, which is a general outline for a plan to
clean up the remaining impacted soil and groundwater at the former
blending facility site.
1993 Companies sign Administrative Order on Consent stating they agree to
perform the remedies described in the Record of Decision.

Page I 3/95
Page2
1993 to Present Companies perform detailed scientific and engineering studies
of the site and design site clean-up plans.
1995 With EPA approval, companies will sample the groundwater beneath
about a dozen properties west of the site and in the anticipated direction
of the groundwater flow. The sampling will determine the chemical
makeup of the groundwater and the physical nature of the groundwater
flow.
It is believed that none of the owners of the properties drink unsafe
water. The sample area is served by the Aberdeen municipal water
system. The quality of the municipal water is tested regularly and must
meet strict state standards.
EPA will report the findings of the sampling program when it is
completed.
Completion of the final design for the specified soil removal action and
groundwater remedy at the former facility.
1996 After EPA approval of the final design, companies will begin
implementing a soil and groundwater remedial action plan as developed
for the former blending facility site.

Questions You May Have
About the Geigy Site
Answers Provided by Olin Corporation,
Ciba-Geigy Corporation, Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation
What is the Geigy Superfund Site?
From 1948-67 several companies
operated a facility in Aberdeen where crop
protection chemicals were blended for
shipment to tobacco, cotton and other farms
in North Carolina and throughout the
Southeast. The site was used for retail sales
of agricultural products from 1968-89.
The site of that former blending facility is
between NC 211 and the Aberdeen and
Rockfish Railroad tracks. In 1989, the
Environmental Protection Agency added that
site to the National Superfund Priorities List.
While it is called the Geigy Superfund Site,
companies involved include Olin
Corporation, Ciba Corporation and Kaiser
Aluminum and Chemical Corporation. These
companies volunteered to undertake an
investigation and clean-up of the site.
What's being done at the site to
protect public health and the
environment?
The large majority of soil containing the
crop protection chemicals was removed
almost four years ago. Pending preparation
of a final design and approval from EPA, we
expect to complete removal of impacted soil
at the Site in 1996. Additionally, impacted
groundwater at the site will be pumped from
the ground and treated to remove any site
compounds. This "pump and treat" system
will begin operation in 1996.
Page I
Why is my property involved?
EPA has approved a plan for us to sample
the groundwater under about a dozen parcels
of land west of the former blending facility
site and in the direction of groundwater flow.
The samples will be analyzed to determine
whether or not chemical compounds are
present in the groundwater.
Groundwater flow in the Aberdeen area is
complex. Based on our current understanding
of groundwater flow, we have chosen your
property as a location that will add valuable
information to our knowledge of local
groundwater conditions.
What if compounds are found in
groundwater beneath my property?
If site-related compounds are found in that
groundwater, the samples will be further
analyzed to determine if the compounds came
from the Geigy Site, how far the compounds
have moved and whether they exceed approved
federal or state standards for those compounds.
The bottom line is this: Am I being
exposed to those chemicals from the
Geigy site?
No. To our knowledge no one in the
sample area is drinking unsafe water. The
sample area is served by the Aberdeen
Municipal Water System, which is tested
regularly and must meet strict state standards.
Even if compounds are present in the
groundwater under your land, that ground-
water is well beneath the earth's surface.

Geigy Site IJpdate
Beginning April 3, you may notice
increased activity at the Geigy Site, a former
pesticide blending and retail facility, located
east of Aberdeen on N.C. 211.
Residents just west of the site will also see
activity in their neighborhood for about a
month and a half. These activities are part of
our ongoing effort, in coordination with the
EPA, to investigate any potential impact of
the site.
As we move forward with clean-up plans
for the former facility, we are also sampling
groundwater immediately to the west and
southwest. Landowners on whose property the
sampling will take place have given
permission for the work to proceed.
To the best of our knowledge, no one in the
sampling area is drinking unsafe water. The
Aberdeen municipal water system is tested
regularly and must meet strict state standards.
We will make every effort to minimize
disruption during the upcoming work. Should
