This investi- gation was requested by Jon Bornholm, RPM for the site, who was also present on site and assisted with the investigation. Eight groundwater samples and one sediment (dry drainage ditch) sample were collected from the site. The samples were collected to further characterize the site. INVESTIGATION FINDINGS Analytical data summaries are presented in Table 1 and Table 2. Figure 1 shows sampling locations. All analytical data is in Appendix A. One sediment sample was collected from the inner ditch at the western edge of the site (SED-001). This sample contained none of the identified contaminants of concern at significant levels (Table 1). The six on-site groundwater monitoring wells were sampled. Prior sampling had indicated a potential problem with metals in groundwater, although it was possible that observed high concen- trations were due to sediment in these samples. In addition, previous sampling had indicated a sharp drop in voe contamination was taking place on site. To reduce sediment in samples, all wells were purged and sampled using a peristaltic pump. No metals concentrations in these samples exceed MCL's (Table 2). Benzene concentrations appear to have stabilized, at least temporarily, with samples from wells MWS-001, MWD-001, MWS- 002, and MWD-002 exceeding the health based value of l ppb. It should be noted that analytical results for the duplicate samples are in close agreement, suggesting that sampling with peristaltic pumps should be required for any future sampling at this site. The analytical results for the two shallow downgradient wells, MWS-003, and MWS-004 indicate that the plume is still well within the boundaries of the site. The temporary well (MWT-001) installed at the western edge of the site to fill a perceived data gap likewise showed no significant contaminants. Sample SFC-001 is a potable water sample collected from the nearest downgradient well, approximately 1200 feet from the site. • I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I -2 - CONCLOIIION Previous sampling results indicated high levels of chromium and lead in groundwater samples collected at the site. Because it was thought possible that at least some portion of the contamination was due to excessive sediment in samples, the wells were sampled again using a sampling technique to reduce the amount of sediment entrained in the samples. The sediment problem encountered in the wells at this site can be successfully addressed by using the sampling technique described above. This third round sampling of monitoring wells at the site confirms earlier sampling results concerning the nature and extent of the benzene contaminant plume. It is significant in that concentrations exceed the health based standard of 1 ppb, but the plume is small in size and very local to the former source area. METHODOLOGY The six onsite monitoring wells were purged using a peristaltic pump to minimize disturbance of fines in the wells. Well MWD-002 was sampled in duplicate (duplicate sample number MWD-003). A temporary monitoring well was installed· and sampled on the western edge of the site. A sediment sample was also collected from the inner perimeter ditch encircling the site, near the temporary well. Physical measurements were made of the IDW holding tank to determine how much wastewater was in the tank and a s,:tmple of the wastewater in the tank was collected. Figure l shows all sampling locations. The groundwater and sediment samples were analyzed for Target Compound List organics and Target Analyte List metals (TCL/TAL), using DQO Level IV protocols. Benzene analyses in the groundwater samples were analyzed using a different standard to provide a detection limit of 1 ug/1 (standard detection limit is usually 5 ug/1).
