Dear Mr. Mallary: ARCADIS Geraghty & Miller, Inc., (ARCADIS Geraghty & Miller) collected a round of groundwater samples at selected wells at the JFD Electronics/Channel t-.faster site. The purpose of this sampling was to evaluate if the plume has migrated farther at the above-referenced facility. This report summarizes the procedure used to collect the groundwater samples and discusses the anal)1ical results. SUMMARY OF FIELD ACTIVITIES AND RESULTS The field activities were conducted by ARCADIS Geraghty & Miller personnel during the period of March 2, 1999, and March 4, 1999. These activities include groundwater level measurements and groundwater sampling of 12 monitor wells. The following sections describe various field activities and provide a summary of sampling infom1ation. Field Activities Depth-to-water measurements were collected from all on-site and off-site monitor wells, with the exception of wells CMMW05 and CMMWI0, on March 2, 1999. Wells CMMW05 and CMMWI0 were buried under a layer of gravel and required a magnetic detector to locate them; therefore, water levels from wells CMM\V IO and CMMW05 were collected on March 3 and 4, 1999, respectively. The water-level measurements were collected using an electronic water-level probe. Groundwater samples were collected on March 2 through 4, 1999. The groundwater sampling activity was performed in accordance with the Remedial Design Work Plan prepared by ARCADIS Geraghty & Miller in 1993. A low-flow sampling methodology was employed for well sampling in an effort to obtain groundwater samples with low turbidity and to minimize volatilization. The monitor wells sampled include CMMW04, CMMW0\ CMMW07: CMMWI0·, CMMWl5·, CMMWI7: CMMWI9: CMMW20: CMMW21; CMMW2i, CMMW2{ and CMMW26: ll1csc 12 monitor wells were purged and sampled using peristaltic pumps with dedicated Our ref.: g:\g&m\:iprojcct~fdchann\nc0202.190\rcport~1sarnp•rpl.dl)c\20-Oct-99 ARCAOIS Geraghty & Miller, Jnc. 2301 Rexwood1 Drive Suite 102 Raleigh North Carolina 27607 Tel 919 782 S511 Fax 919 782 5905 ENVIRONMENTAL Raleigh, NC. 20 October! 999 Contact: William H. Approximately three well volumes of water were purged from each well, except for well Cl'v!MWI 7, prior to sampling. The recharge rate of well CMMW-17 was very low and the well was dry after purging 1.07 well volumes. Therefore, this well was left overnight to be recharged and was sampled the next day (within 24 hours). During purging of monitor wells, pH, specific conductance, and temperature were measured and recorded using portable meters calibrated in the field. This information was recorded on a groundwater sampling log. Copies of the groundwater san1pling logs are enclosed as Attachment I. Purge water and equipment decontamination water (investigative-derived waste) generated during sampling were placed in the existing storage container at the site for future disposal. Once collected, the groundwater samples were placed in appropriately labeled and preserved, laboratory-supplied containers, packed on ice in a cooler, and shipped to Savannah Laboratories and Environmental Services, Inc., Savannah, Georgia, for analysis. A chain-of-custody form was used to maintain a complete record of all personnel that had contact with the samples. Copies of the chain-of-custody records arc enclosed with the laboratory anal:,tical reports in Attachment 2. Results The depth-to-water measurements were converted to groundwater elevations using the well survey data. Table I presents the depth-to-water measurement and groundwater elevation. Figure I presents the groundwater elevation contour map with general groundwater flow direction. Based on this map, the groundwater flow direction is toward the southeast on the JFD Electronics/Channel Master property and casU northeast on the off-site property. The groundwater flow pattern is similar to those previously observed. All groundwater samples collected at the site were submitted for analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using U.S. Environmental Protection (USEPA) Method 8260. In addition, the groundwater san1ple from monitor well CMl\1\V04 was analyzed for total and amemble cyanide (USEP A 90 I 0). Upon receipt of completed laboratory amlyscs, ARCADIS Geraghty & Miller validated the data using Level II Data Quality objectives. A summary of laboratory anal)1ical results is presented in Table 2. Based on the anal)tical results described in Table 2, the VOC concentrations in on-site monitor wells vary slightly from the previous sampling events, with the exception of monitor wells CMiv!W05. As sho"n in Figure 2, monitor wells CMtv!W05 had total trichlorocthcne (TCE) concentrations of 180,000 micrograms per liter (ftg/L). This concentration is significantly higher than that detected historically in well CMMW05 (sec Figure 2). The reason for this increase is unknO\\TI at this time. Our ref.: g:\ g&m '.,project~ f dchannlncO 2 0 2 . l 901rcp.:i rt.~l.c;;unp•rvt.doc\2 0-Oct -9 9 Page: 2/3 I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I ARCADIS GERAGHTY&MILLER The total VOC concentrations in the groundwater samples collected from off-site monitor wells CMMW04, CMMW21, CMMW07, CMMW17, CMMW19, CMMW21, CMMW22, CMMW24, and CMMW26 did not vary significantly from the previous sampling results. Since the historical data indicate the presence of cyanide, monitor well CMMW04 was also sampled for total and amenable cyanide analyses. The total and amenable cyanide concentrations detected in this well were qualified as estimated at 250J ftg/L each, respectively. The previously-measured total and amenable cyanide concentrations (February 25, 1998) in the groundwater sample from this well were 240 and JO µg/L, respectively. Summary To evaluate if the groundwater contamination has migrated farther, a round of groundwater samples was collected from representative monitor wells at the facility in March 1999. The groundwater sampling results indicate that the dissolved contaminant concentrations in the perimeter monitor wells have not changed significantly since the last sampling event conducted in February 1998. However, significantly higher concentrations of total VOCs were observed in monitor well CMMW05 (hot-spot well). Since no significant changes in contaminant concentrations were observed in the perimeter monitor wells, the contaminant plume docs not appear to have migrated farther.
