Soil & Material Engineers, Inc. has been authorized to install four to five • permanent ground water monitor wells at the Channel Master Satellite System, Inc. facility, The wells are being installed around a lagoon used by a previous owner to hold chromium waste sludge. The monitor wells will be constructed to the standards discussed in 1.5NCAC 2C.0J08, Standards of Construction: Wells other than Water Supply (C). Upon completion, Soll & Material Engineers, Inc. will complete Well Construction Record Form GW-1 Revised 11/84 and submit them to the Division of Environmental Management. This monitor well was placed approximately In the middle of the original lagoon area, MONITOR WELL Upon arrival at the site on March 3, 1986, the drill rig and drill equipment .were steamed deaned to prevent introduction of contaminants into the borehole during drllllng. A CME-.5.5 rotary drill rig was used to drill the borehole. Continuous flight hollow-stem augers (9.5'' O.D.) were used to advance through 19 • .5 feet of sludge and fill material (sludge clay, silt, sand) to the virgin substrate, H-caslng (8.5'' O,D.) was set to 19.8 feet to provide a seal between fill/ sludge material and virgin substrate during drilling. The remainder of the borehole was advanced through weathered rock to .58.0 feet using the washbore method with a roller cone drill bit, Soil samples were taken at 2 • .5 feet intervals in the top 10 feet of virgin substrate and at .5,0 feet intervals thereafter by means of a split barrel sampler in accordance with ASTM D-1.586. OAIAN[l() TAMPA "' ' t I I • • • C~el Master Satellite Systems March Zl, 1986 Page 2 As the drillrod was pulled out of the borehole after completing the drilling operation, the roller cone drill bit became disconnected and fell to the bottom of the hole, Efforts to retrieve the bit failed. The roller bit was sealed at the bottom of the hole, A one foot layer of 0,25 inch bentonite pellet topped by 1.1 feet of concrete size sand was used to seal the drill bit from the monitor well. After completion of the borehole, a ground water monitor well was installed as shown in the Schematic Diagram in the Appendix. The monitor well materials were steam cleaned before placement in the bo~ehole. In general a 2-inch diameter PVC casing with a IO-foot long PVC screen was placed in the borehole, The annular space was backfilled with a concrete· size sand to 3.7 feet above the well screen as determined by a S&ME geologist. In order to provide a seal against infiltration of surface water along the sides of the borehole, 3.3 feet of 0.25 inch bentonite pellets were applied on top of the sand pack. The remaining length of the borehole was grouted in two stages with a neat cement grout so as to insure an adequate seal between fill material and virgin substrate, The first grout stage filled the hole up to 17.0 feet and was allowed to set for approximately 16 hours. Then the remainder of the hole was grouted to the ground surface. A protective steel casing with a lockable cap was grouted in around the top of the monitor well. The work was completed on March 6, 1986. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS Soil conditions encountered at the boring are shown in the Appendix. In general, the upper 17.0 feet consisted of orange to brown to dark gray sandy clayey silt followed by 3 feet of orange-brown sand, This upper 20 feet was considered fill material. A hard orange-brown silt was encountered from 20-28 feet grading into a very dense dark brown sand with lenses of metamorphosed granitic rock. The boring terminated in a dark brown sand. A copy of the North Carolina Division of Environmental Management Completion Well Record is included in the Appendix.
