USEPA DOCKET NUMBERS: 93-09-C
PERIOD ENDING: July 31, 2004
1. PROGRESS MADE THIS MONTH
Remedial Action (RA) -HABITAT MITIGATION. No activities were conducted this month.
Remedial Action (RA) -GROUNDWATER TREATMENT. The treatment system operated
without fail from June 23'" to July 22 nd, 2004. On July 27th, when the operator returned for his
routine visit, he noticed that a fuse failed in the main disconnect panel. The operator replaced this
fuse and restarted the system. By comparing the effluent meter reading to the typical flow, the
operator determined that the system was down for approximately 120 hours. System
perfomiance was monitored on a biweekly basis. Approximately 45,270 gallons of groundwater
were extracted, treated in the treatment plant, and discharged between June 23, 2004 and July 27,
2004. System water samples were collected on July 2 and July 13, 2004 in accordance with the
sampling schedule in the O&M manual. Samples were submitted to Severn Trent Laboratories,
Inc. for laboratory analysis. The operations and sampling programs are summarized on the
attached Table I.

Sample Receiving:
STL Pittsburgh, PA received samples on May 3, 2004. The cooler was received within
the proper temperature range.
STL West Sacramento outside of the proper temperature range received the samples.
If project specific QC was not required for samples contained in this report and batch QC
was completed on these samples, anomalous results will be discussed below.
GC/MS Semivolatiles SIM:
Since insufficient sample volume was received to perform a matrix spike and matrix
spike duplicate, a Laboratory Control Sample (LCS) and Laboratory Control Duplicate
(LCD) were performed. All recoveries were within QC limits.
The reporting limits were adjusted according to the amount of sample extracted.
•
Due to the concentration of target compounds detected, sample SV-10 I was analyzed at a •
dilution;
Dioxins:
STL West Sacramento, CA performed the dioxin analysis. All results are included in the
report.
There were no problems associated with the analysis.

THE RETEC GROUP
Raleigh, Biweekely NPDES
STL Lot# C4E200255
STL Pittsburgh, PA received one sample on May 20, 2004. The cooler was received
within the proper temperature range.

MONTHLY PROGRESS REPORT #131
REMEDIAL ACTION
SITE NAME: Koppers Superfund Site
Beazer East, Inc.
Morrisville, NC
USEPA DOCKET NUMBERS: 93-09-C
PERIOD ENDING: March 31, 2004
1. PROGRESS MADE THIS MONTH
Remedial Action (RA) -HABITAT MITIGATION. No activities were conducted this month.
Remedial Action (RA)-GROUNDWATER TREATMENT. The treatment system operated
throughout the month without upset. System performance was monitored on a biweekly basis.
Approximately 50,720 gallons of groundwater were extracted, treated in the treatment plant, and
discharged between March I, 2004 and March 31, 2004. System water samples were collected
on March 5 and March 25, 2004 in accordance with the sampling schedule in the O&M manual.
Samples were submitted to Severn Trent Laboratories, Inc. for laboratory analysis. Note that due
to unusual circumstances, the samples collected on March 5th were not shipped until March 11 th
and thus received on March 12th . This late arrival of the samples caused the semivolatiles to be extracted outside the hold time and therefore, the results should be considered as estimates. The
operations and sampling programs are summarized on the attached Table I.

STL Lot# C4Cl20295
•
STL Pittsburgh, PA received one sample on March 12, 2004. The cooler was received
within the proper temperature range. The sample was received in the laboratory 7 days
after the sample was collected.
If project specific QC was not required for samples contained in this report and batch QC
was completed on these samples, anomalous results will be discussed below.
GC/MS Semivolatiles SIM:
The sample was extracted three days outside the recommended extraction holding time.
Since insufficient sample volume was received to perform a matrix spike and matrix
spike duplicate, a Laboratory Control Sample (LCS) and Laboratory Control Duplicate
(LCD) were performed. All recoveries were within QC limits.

Sample Receiving:
STL Pittsburgh, PA received samples on January 7, 2004. The cooler was received
within the proper temperature range.
STL West Sacramento, CA received samples on January 7, 2004. The cooler was
received outside of the proper temperature range.
If project specific QC was not required for samples contained in this report and batch QC
was completed on these samples, anomalous results will be discussed below.
GC/MS Semivolatiles SIM:
The reporting limits were adjusted according to the amount of sample extracted.
Due to the concentration of target compounds detected, sample SV-101 was analyzed at a
dilution.
Since insufficient sample volume was received to perform a matrix spike and matrix
spike duplicate, a Laboratory Control Sample (LCS) and Laboratory Control Duplicate
(LCD) were performed. All recoveries were within QC limits.
Dioxins:
STL West Sacramento, CA performed the dioxin analysis. All results are included in the
report.
The method blank had 2,3, 7,8-TCDD detected between the MDL and the reporting limit.
The result was flagged with a 'T' qualifier. This compound was not detected in any of
the samples.
