Upon review of the data, it seems that we may need to discuss the possibility of additional sampling locations north of SW 25, south of SW 24 & east of SW 28, We feel TCL, TAL, phenolics and IPE, will not be necessary but pentachlorophenol and phenolics ma:r. be justified for further study in these locations. No. 179280-06 The analytical data for the surface water sariiples collected during May of 1990 from the Koppers Morrisville site were evaluated Ito provide guidance for selection of the second sampling round analytical parameter;s. Keystone submitted a summary table to you for all first round surface water sample analyses performed between May 1 and 7, 1990 in a transmittal dated July 12,' 1990 (Round 1 summary). Analytical parameters included: semi-volatile orga~ic compounds (EPA method 8270); volatile organic compounds (8240); pesticides and PCBs (SOSO); phenolic compounds (8040); ·pentachlorophenol (515); isopropyl ether (8020); metals (aluminum, antimony, arsenic, barium, betyllium, cadmium, calcium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, . lead, magnesium, manganese, mercury, nickel, potassium, selenium, silver,. sodiu·m, thallium, vanadium, and zinc); cyanide; and water quality parameters (alkalinity;. chloride and sulfate).: After reviewing the detected constituents bresented in the Round 1 summary, Keystone determined the parameters of interest recommended for the second round of surface water sampling are: phenolic I compounds, pentachlorophenol, and isopropyl ether. Round 1 data suggest pes'ticides, PCBs and cyanide are not of concern. Concentrations of volatile and semi-volatile organic constituents and metals also were detected in some surface water samples, however, these will not be considered for the second round of sampling as will be explained below. I Only one semivolatile organic compound (bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate) and two volatile organic compounds (methylene chloride and acetone) were detected in the surface water samples: collected during thel first sampling round. Since these compounds are commonly known laboratory a'rtifacts, and since their concentrations in the samples did not exceed ten times their respective maximum blank concentrations (from tlie blank data available), it is likely that the data validation currently being performed will discount these': constituents as being constituents of concern for the second round of surface water sampling. All metals were detected in the surface water samples with the exceptions being antimony, mercury, nickel, silver, and thallium. Of all of the metals which were detected, only aluminum, beryllium, iron, and manganese concentrations were found to exceed their respective MCLs (proposed or tentative MCLs) or SMCLs.; It is likely that the concentration levels detected for aluminum, iron and manganese are due to the natural abundance of these metals in soils and sediments. Beryllium, on the other hand, iwhich is not as abundant was detected in only one sample at: a low concentration (1.3 ug/L) which is just slightly above the tentative MCL of 1.p ug/L for beryllium. 1 I Moreover, the surface water samples in which these metals were detected were not filtered prior to laboratory sample preparation. It is likely that sediments were present 10 the samples and contributed to the elevated concentrations of metals detected in the aqueous digestants of the samples. Therefore, for the above reasons and since these metals are not considered, to be site-related constituents, Keystone recommends that TAL analysis (metals) not be considered as parameters of interest for the second round of surface water sampling. ' ' I Regarding the Round 1 summary of dioxin/furan analyses for locations SW-10-FP and SW-12-FP, results indicate that little difference, if any, exists between the filtered and unfiltered samples. It should 1be noted that the result for the OCDD analysis on sample SW-10-FP (unfiltered) is flagged with an "S" laboratory qualifier indicating that the normal dynamic range of the mass spectrometer detecuon system was exceeded. The ,reported OCDD conc'entration for that sample (122 ng/L S) represents a "minimum estimate" irrespective of whether the ion-abundance ratio or the retention time identification criteria we~e met.
