RE: Second Quarter Sampling Results
Third Quarter Sampling
Off-Site Wells
Morrisville, NC Site
RECEIVED
JUL 2 1 '188!:i
SUPERFUNO BRANCH
Beazer Materials and Services, Inc. submits for your review the analytical results of
the Second Quarter Sampling of off-site wells in the vicinity of its former plant in
Morrisville, North Carolina. As we have discussed, the reliability of the data for all
samples, which were collected on May 3, 1989, and exhibited detectable levels of~
pentachlorophenol (PCP), is in question because the Trip Blank taken on that day
contained 0.051 ppb PCP. In our opinion, the positive detections are not valid and
the wells must be retested.
Also, attached for your review and approval is a list of proposed sampling locations
and parameters for the third quarter. I generally have not included for sampling
those wells which are presently, or in the immediate future will be supplied with
bottled water. Four exceptions to this are locations lOL, 14H, 25H, and 28J, which
will be resampled.
We propose to resample select wells which have shown no detectable levels of PCP
or !PE and to resample in the third quarter wells which showed negative results on
the single round in May.
We are tentatively scheduled to sample the wells the week of August 14, 1989.
Please let me know if this week is acceptable and any requirements that you may
have for splitting well samples. ·

ENVIRONMENTAL
RESOURCES
Attached are the results on the Second Quarter 1989 Domestic Well SamP.les taken
on May 3, and May 4, 1989, which were analyzed for isopropyl ether(IPE) and
pentachlorophenol(PCP). Inspection of the data has shown that sample M89-05.31-
024 which was the trip Blank taken on May 3, 1989, contained no detectable levels
of IPE ( < 1.00 ppb ), but that 0.051 ppb PCP was found in this sample. No PCP -)
( <0.010 ug/L) was found in the trip blank sample collected on May 4, 1989. No
explanation is immediately evident for the presence of PCP in this sample. As a
result, the reliability of the data for all samples collected on the same day that
contain detectable levels of PCP and are lower than the level observed in this Trip
Blank Sample is questionable.
