(KF&A) to prepare this Semiannual Operations Report for the F-Well Extraction System. This report documents the system operations from February 1, 1995 to July 31, 1995 and includes the results of the May 1995 ground-water quality sampling event Background HCC installed the F-Well extraction system in August 1993. The system includes four ground- wate:r/product extraction wells: PEW-1, PEW-2, PEW-3, and PEW-4 (Figure 1). Extracted ground-water is discharged through an underground sewer line to the on-site wastewater treatment plant. Treated ground water is discharged to the NPDES permitted outfall. The system was approved by the state of North Carolina in May 1994 and was put into operation on June I, 1994. System Operation From February 1, 1995 through July 31, 1995, the system extracted 2,020,890 gallons of ground water. No free product was recovered during the current semiannual reporting period. Table I presents a summary of the total gallons produced and the average daily pumping rates for each of the extraction wells. The production rates presented in Table I are somewhat lower than those from the previous semiannual repo1ting period. The depths to water in the four extraction wells have been measured in the past on a monthly basis and are now measured quaiterly as part of the system operation and maintenance program. These values have been plotted on Figure 2, together with the pre-pumping levels measured on June 1, 1994. This plot shows that the water-level measurements for each of the PEW wells were below the pre-pumping levels during each quarter of the cmTent reporting pe1iod. Copies of the daily extraction well flow volumes and system maintenance logs for the F-Well extraction system are included in Attachment 1. The throttling valve on well PEW-2 was cleaned on February 21, 1995, and the well was reported to have low or no flow from April 14 to April 22 and no flow from April 22 through the entire month of June 1995. On July 6, when the pump was replaced, PEW-2 resumed normal pumping activities. On July 13, the strainer in PEW-2 was cleaned and the well's flow was adjusted to one gallon per minute. PEW-3 was maintenance-free until July, when it had no flow from July 17 to July 23. On July 24, the flow meter on PEW-3 was replaced and the well resumed pumpmg. Analytical Results Ground-water samples were collected by KF&A from three extraction wells (PEW-I, -3, -4) on May 30, 1995 for analysis of volatile and semivolatile organics by EPA Methods 8240 and 8270. Extraction well PEW-2 was down for repairs at the time of sampling. Copies of the sampling logs and the laboratory reports are included in Attachments 2 and 3, respectively. No volatile or semivolatile organic compounds were reported as present above the detection limits in samples from well PEW-3. The only constituent reported as present in PEW-I and PEW- 4 was the volatile organic compound trichloroethene, at concentrations of 10 µg/L and 98 µg/L, respectively. Table 2 is a summary of the analytes reported above the detection limits in the May 1995 data set. Closing Comments With the exception of the downtime reported at PEW-2, the F-Well extraction system performed according to design. No free product was recovered during the rep01ting period, and no volatile or semivolatile constituents were reported above quantitation limits with the exception of trichlorocthene in wells PEW-1 (10 µg/L) and PEW-4 (98 µg/1). The next sampling event is scheduled for November 1995 with the next report due to DEHNR in February 1996. (!EA) on June 01, 1995. Each sample was assigned a 9-character "!EA" lab identification number (lab ID) and an abbreviated client ID which is referenced on the !EA Assigned Number Index. All analyses are performed in accordance with EPA approved methodologies and meet the requirements of the !EA Quality Assurance Program. Please see the enclosed data package for your results and Chain of Custody documentation. The chromatographic separation of the analytes was performed using a Restek 30 X 0.32 XTI-5 fused silica capillary column with a 0.5 µm bonded phase film thickness. Instrument data printouts identify the compound 2,2' -oxybis(l-Chloropropane) with CAS number I 08-60- 1. Alternative nomenclature for this compound is bis(2-Chloroisopropyl)ether which is included on report forms submitted. The "J" flag used on the Form I SV for samples PEW4MS and PEW4MSD indicate spike compounds which recovered below the quantitation limit. The "M" flag used on the data system report form designates that a manual integration was required to provid,! an accurate quantification of that analyte. Manual integrations have been initialed and dated by the analyst. Any nonconformances associated with the analysis of the samples in this project are as follows: Matrix Spike/Matrix Spike Duplicate (PEW4MS/PEW4MSD) percent recovery for 4-Nitrophenol exceeded the limits specified for this method due to good extraction efficiency. The surrogates 2-Fluorophenol and 2,4,6-Tribromophenol recovered outside of the method specified limits in sample PEW I. The sample was re-extracted outside of method specified holding time and did not confirm the failing surrogate recoveries. The results from both the original analysis and re-extraction analsyis have been submitted with this data package. Sample PEW IRE was double-spiked with Internal Standards prior to analysis. The surrogate recoveries and target compound concentrations have been adjusted to reflect this error.
